Leigh 12-19-2005, 09:27 PM I have come across many who have sworn that it would cure the relux, but it does not, or at least I have not seen or heard of anyone who claims that it has. This comes from someone who has not tried it, so keep that in mind.:) I have been so desperate for help that I have sought out some alternative therapies including Bowen therapy, consultation with a naturalist, and probiotics. Really, it is the prevacid and zantac that have made the biggest differences thus far.:-? GERD is fickle. GERD is not the same with every child so what works for one may not work for the next, so you have to research and see what you would like to try and feel comfortable with. I have entertained the idea of going to a chiro for my middle son (who is being treated at age of 4 for GERD) as he has massive bowel issues and my good friend swears it will help. Sometime in the New Year I will look into it as I come to the end of my rope with our GI. I have personally used a chiro in the past and have found them to be a benefit, but I am leery on having them work on a child. Really, I have not reseached it enough to feel comfortable with it, so hopefully someone who has been there or has researched it will post. Keep us updated with whatever you find out, ok! momto5 12-19-2005, 10:12 PM I was alway skeptical of chiros too even though we have two very close friends who are chiros (husband /wife team). One day the wife came to visit me and ds after reading about ds on our prayer chain. She adjusted him in our home and later called to ask if she and her husband could treat him. At this point in ds life, I was desperate for help, and I really trusted this couple, as we had been friends for years so I agreed. DS has not been cured of his gerd after two months of chiro treatment, but I have noticed a big difference in the amount and frequency of his spitting up, and he rests better on the days he's adjusted. DS is adjusted twice a week. Once he missed an appt. and by the next one, he was puking like crazy! Could be a coincident, but I couldn't say for sure. I will continue to take him as long as they want to see him. DS loves to be adjusted too...he smiles and actually sighs sometimes after his little back pops! I would recommend chiros to anyone....for me, seeing was believing. LaurensMommy 12-20-2005, 08:41 AM Lauren is also adjusted on a regular basis, however, it has not helped with her reflux. She gets adjusted when mom gets adjusted. Janette 12-20-2005, 09:08 AM There have been a few member on here with testaments like that of Jennifer and many who said what Sandy did. B/c of the many other issues that Evan deals with, I chose not to try the chiro. route. Perhaps if I had chiro. that I trust more than the last one that I had, I would be willing to give it a try now that he's older. Noah's Mom 12-20-2005, 10:51 AM I know some swear by it, but I'm an anti-chiro advocate. Due to some extensive back surgery of my own, I see a team of spine surgeons several times a year, and they lecture me on just why seeing a chiropractor is not a good idea. It may provide temporary relief, but not a cure for anything. As far as the reflux goes, I have never heard of anyone being cured, and typically, one will say that there has been some improvment over time, which is common with most GERDlings. MOST will improve as they age. GERDlings over 6 months that continue to suffer from persistant symptoms are in the 5% of diagnosed refluxers. The rest get better with time, which explains why the adjustments seem to work for some. Sorry, if I have offended anyone. I have strong feelings about letting anyone snap a babies spine knowing what I know. ALSO, chiropractors are NOT medical doctors. They did not go to medical school, therefore, their knowledge of GERD is NOT what any other doctors would be. Alright...off my soapbox. LaurensMommy 12-20-2005, 12:40 PM No offense taken Maggie, everyone is entitled to there own opinions. However, I have never heard of one medical doctor that has ever recommended anyone seeing a natural doctor or a natural remedy. Hence the reason your surgeon/doctor has given you reasons why not to see a chiropractor. No, Lauren's visits to the chiropractor have not cured her reflux, but I didn't and still do not take her there for a reflux cure. I take her because I know I feel better after being adjusted and I think she does also. I have on many occassions seen my chiro. because I have hurt my back from something or other... last time was b/c I was going too fast on the snowmobile and got thrown off of it. And, once being adjusted and massaged, I was good as new. I prefer this over any pain medication. Doctors are what drive the drug industry. They get incentives to prescribe these drugs, so naturally they are not going to say "go see the chiro.", they're going to give you a prescription Last week when Lauren was sick, I swear she was taking more meds than an older person. 4 drugs at once is a little too much to be giving a 9 mo. old. This is just my opinion... I prefer natural. lucyinaz 12-20-2005, 01:21 PM It would seem that most of the time, all we can do is treat the symptoms of GERD... we can't really do very much about the actual problem except wait it out and make the kid as comfortable as possible in the meantime. That said, chiropractic could offer some relief. It depends on the chiropractor. My mom has had a hard time with frozen shoulder - actually had it in both shoulders, which is uncommon - and her chiropractor was able to help her in a way that the orthopedic doctor had not. She has nearly full range of motion now. THis guy was good. I've had 2 not-so-great chiropractors who were very happy to take my $$ and waste my time and try to convert me to their brand of Christianity or New Age - eh, no thanks. Get a good, solid referral from people you trust. Leigh 12-20-2005, 08:37 PM I have actually had great success with Bowen therapy, but not for GERD. It was fantastic when I cracked my back last year after a fall down the stairs (after one adjustment the pain was bearable and the second one lasted longer. It took 6 treatments, but I would not hesitate ever!) It also does amazing work to immediately drain the sinuses. I really could not believe it, but it worked on me twice, Curran once, and Iain about 6 times. Each time the results were immediate and lasted. Bowen therapy is NOT chiropractic, rather it is a re-setting of muscles. The therapist worked on Curran a few times for his bowel issues and it did help, but within a few days. Immediately though, he said his tummy felt better. I unfortunately lost the therapist who we had but she has opened her own clinic now and I am thinking of going back again just to see if there is the same response by the kids. It was not painful for the kids in any way, very gentle and non-restricting. She was awesome. Noah's Mom 12-20-2005, 10:05 PM I know there are doctors that push the drugs for the companies, but I can assure you that the surgeons that worked on my back do not. I am not on any medications or therapies other than their consultations and xrays. Actually, doctors RUN when they read my medical history. They want nothing to do with me. The reason my surgeons lecture me is that that it is life-threatening for me to have an adjustment. I could die or be paralysed by something like that. I know I told the story of my stepfather on here once before, but he went in for a treatment from a HIGHLY credible chiro in our area (still practicing unfortunately) after a parachuting accident. The chiro adjusted his neck incorrectly and my stepfather had a stroke right there on the table. He nearly died, but I am lucky that he fully recovered. Anyhow, I think that's a good enough reason for not getting popped. BUT, there are two sides to every story. I am very open to natural therapies, although I have never looked into them closely. I just don't like chiropractic therapy because I think it is too invasive and harsh for one's body. There are many other options that are not as "physical" to check out. I would not do ANYTHING without the approval of a medical doctor. Even if your ped doesn't have any alternative ideas, I know there are peds out there who will educate you on the options, although they might be hard to find. |
