View Full Version : What did you feed your baby?

Just wondering what others are or did feed their six month olds. DS likes to eat solids, but has such a time w/them. I have to thicken almost all baby food because he spits them up so much if I don't, and I have found that he can't really tolerate any veggies (we've tried squash and carrots), and an array of fruits...they aggravate the acid reflux. So is it okay to give him just cereal and apples and bannas all the time? When should I try to introduce other foods? What about homemade baby food? Anyone done that w/ success?

Catherine lived on bananas, squash and rice cereal from months 7-9 and then she was able to tolerate other foods (after RAST testing showed no allergies). The quantities she ate of those three items was really immaterial, and she still doesn't eat enough to sustain herself on solids. At 11mo, she is still primarily formula fed.

I made all Parkers food, I just used to stream them. He loved sweet potato and carrots- so much that he started turning orange-no joke. But also broccoli, potato, corn, turnips, parsnips, spinach- basically anything. Just cut it up and get one of those microwave steamers and takes about 3-4 min adn then belnd it. If you do one veg at a time and see if it gives a reaction and then you can start mixing them together.

I had a lot of success when it was pureed and slight chunks, but he stopped eating at the finger food/feed yourself stage.
I also gave a lot of cereal, cause he liked it.

Yes, I make all the boys food.. I used to puree it wiht a hand blender but now I just mash it. They eat lots of things but at 6months, you need to introduce one new food every few days- just to see if there is any reaction. Then, as Rachel suggests, you can put them all together and mash them. We eat most things, although pumpkin and silverbeet are big no-nos for us due to the gas they cause my wee men! Of course every baby is different.... ALso, if bubs diesn't like what's on offer this week, tyr it again in a couple of weeks time. Good luck!! :-)

At 6 months, the boys were on infant cereals, pureed veggies, pureed fruits, and I was beginning to introduce dried breads, crackers, infant cookies, etc. Brandon was a "text book" kid, so it was easy with him. Evan, my refluxer, also has major sensory issues that went undiagnosed until last winter, so things were certainly a challenge with him. He was unable to handle much at all, and certainly not homemade baby food. It really saddened me, as I had made most of Brandon's baby food.

I guess I am anxious for him to have something other than cereal, apples, pears and bannanas, but that those are the only things he seems to tolerate. I am also nervous about him developing a sweet tooth because of only eating fruits right now. I am going to try making some of his food.

One more question...what about meat? I bought him a jar of apples and chicken, but is it too soon to introduce meat? LOL, you would think I never had a baby! The girls, who were healthy, just seemed to eat anything and ate from the table by 7 months...not so with this boy!

I make babyfood for Owen and so far he tolerates Pumpkin, Squash, Green Beans, Spinach and sweet potatoes. I started him on those veggies at 6 months old but he wasn't ready and threw up a lot. Just recently I started them again and he is doing fine now at 7.5 months old. He also eats apples, pears, peaches and blueberries, I mix them with a little cereal and he loves it. He totally can't tolerate carrots, he gets a horrible rash. He is batteling constipation since starting the solids though.
I won't try any meat until he is at least 9 months old due to all the problems we already had.

My daughter, who is about the same age as your son, eats so many different things now. We started her on baby food at 4 months and for the first month and a half or so she couldnt tolerate anything other than fruits. We couldnt even give her cereal. Just before she hit 6 months I tried again with other things and now she eats Apples, Bananas, Pears, Sweet Potatos, Squash, cereal (not without fruit though) and then some mixed varieties too. We also give her table food per the Dr. She said she can have pretty much anything we are having. She gets bits of bread, noodles, meats (chicken or turkey - tiny pieces and only like 2 or 3 at a time), mashed potatos... really anything I can get small enough or moosh up for her. She also eats and LOVES her Gerber Puffs (veggie ones). They really have no nutritional value unless she were to eat 80 of them at once. She doesnt even eat that many in a week! She does like them and it gets her pratice chewing food or gumming actaully! lol

Anyway, hope that helps you a bit...

Noah is 8 months, and can tolerate next to nothing. His diet consists of YoBaby (all flavors now), cereals mixed with white grape juice, and apples. He also can tolerate Gerber Organic Oatmeal mixed with bananas and peaches. I am also very worried about the sweet tooth, but my recent appointment with the GI calmed my nerves. At this age, he said to keep him eating whatever he likes, but to always offer little bits of something he doesn't. I give one bite of veggies (that's the most he can have) with every meal. I'm building on fruit purees, although we've had serious issues with them. My GI calls it simply "a weak digestive system". Noah does GREAT with saltine crackers. I buy the ones that are unsalted, and give 2-3 with every meal. Its great practice for self feeding, and so bland it won't hurt his tummy. Hope this helps!

(BTW--Tonight, for some odd reason, I mixed some squash in with his apples and cereal. Cross your fingers that he tolerates it! I didn't add much, but now that he ate it, I'm very nervous.)

my dr assured me, even gave me a book filled with studies (I'll try and find it), that even living on just bread and a little butter he would be ok. Just potatoes too. unfortunately he ate neither. If not for sweet potaotes he would have starved to death. He ate ONLY sweet potatoes and water until he was 3.

I will not give Catherine plain baby food meat. That stuff is just repulsive, lol. She does like a sweet potato/chicken concoction as well as mixed veggies/turkey. That's all she's had, and all she's going to get until she can handle meat off the table.

I couldn't give either of my girls that cat food (I mean, baby meat). Ick! Cady went for the meats already pureed with vegetables. Turkey rice dinner, sweet potatoes and chicken, apples and chicken, etc. Come to think of it, this was right around 6 mos. old after we'd tried all fruits and veggies and cereals. It was just a next step.
