My ds2 is 4.5 and has never really slept thru the night. He was suspected to have acid reflux by a year old but wasn't actually sent to a gastroenterologist until he was 3 where they did an endoscopy. Anyway, he has never slept thru the night and still wakes frequently. We have elevated the head of his bed and the doctor has said to give him an extra dose of Zantac right before bed because that's when he complains his tummy hurts the most. Any tips on what else I could do?

That's a tough one. My little guy is 3 1/2 now, but didn't start to sleep through the night until after he was 2 1/2 yo. By then he was medicated and starting to feel a bit better, but we still had to teach him how to fall asleep without being rocked once the worst of the pain was gone. Hopefully the increased Zantac will help. Zantac doesn't work for everyone, so perhaps he needs another med.?

They were thinking of putting him on Reglan instead of Prevacid and keeping him on the Zantac. I didn't like the side effects he mentioned about Reglan so he didn't change it. I'll mention something again at his next appt.

I have a 5-yr.old that doesn't sleep through most of the time. Hers issues are due to senstivity to noises and lights, as well as fears of dark and shadows. Her sleep issues are more due to anxiety than anything even remotely physical. So, I can't offer you any advice on getting a reflux kid to sleep. But, it is frustrating to have any older child not sleep through the night. I feel for you.

Okay, wait a minute  I'm NOT the only mommy with a big kid (6 year old) who doesn't sleep thru the night because of Reflux pain ???? All I can really say is I hear you girl and if you all find the magic medicine combo that works let me know. Noah gets Reglan right now along with a million other meds, and nothing seems to work, one way or another that poor little trooper wakes up crying each & every night. In fact he has rarley slept thru the nigth since he was born, I used to lie to people when he was like 6-9 months old and say he did so they wouldn;t ask me so many stupid questions of why he wasn't sleeping at night :)

That sounds like me! I hate when people used to ask that question! He has only slept thru the night once or twice that I can remember.

My daughter rarely sleeps through the night at almost 4. She did last night which shocked me, but usually not. Hers is due to a combo of reflux, coughing, and fear/anxiety. She is scared of the dark and shadows and hates to be alone. She very often sleeps in our bed or our room--but the biggest shocker is that she was actually in her room all night last night. Even if she sleeps in her room she will end up in our bed sometime in the middle of the night. We don't care either because we figure at some point she will be old enough to not want to be in our bed anymore. Our 8 month old is not the least but interested in sleeping with us so we don't have to deal with that at least! What has helped is finding the right med combination and being consistent with it. It has taken us a long time to find that and it constantly changes for reasons that are beyond us. Also, making her room extra comfy full of things she loves--decor and all so that she gets comfortable in there and becomes a room she wants to be in. It has wored pretty good so far.

Hi, my son is 3 and when ever he began having trouble again sleeping we would look into a higher dose or med change. Have you tried mylanta before bed or something?? Maybe Zantac isn't working for you guys, maybe you need a PPI?
