View Full Version : Neocate Trial, What to Expect?
monkeymom 12-14-2005, 04:29 PM Well I am just worn out with trying to eliminate from my diet and not seeing any results. On top of the reflux and delayed spitting up Miranda's BM's have now turned into pure diarrhea. This is a whole new thing for us (was never like this even with Alimentum).
The NP at the GI thinks its all diet/intolerence related so I don't know what else to do other than try the Neocate and see if it helps us and if it does I will have to give up BFing. In the mean time I will pump and store my milk.
Anway do any BTDT mom's have any tips for starting Neocate. Miranda will take a bottle no problem I'm just not sure if she'll take the Neocate since she didn't like powdered Alimentum. We had to use RTF.
Does the Neocate have any side effects like the diarrhea the Alimentum causes?
Any moms who went from BF to Neocate how did your baby handle it? Do they still look to nurse. I am feeling very very sad about this.
KellyW 12-14-2005, 04:52 PM No advice, I just wanted to let you know that I am right there with you. Hang in there...
sixdogssixcats 12-14-2005, 05:02 PM Neocate will have the same effect on poop as Alimentum, as least it did in our experience. It's because it's pre-digested. It should not be actual diarrhea, though. More the consistency of melted ice cream.
LaurensMommy 12-14-2005, 06:45 PM Well, let me give you some hope... Neocate has been a miracle for us, that in conjunction with Zantac. Take it from a mom that has tried 11 different formulas for her daughter with no luck at all. We went from milk to soy to hypoallergenic (nutramigen) and then to Neocate.
Neocate is very thin... almost as thin as water. Lauren's poop on Neocate have not been diarrhea like at all. Actually, just the right consistency. Soft and slightly formed. *grinning at the fact that I now discuss my daughter's bowel movements with anyone that will listen.*:-D
We switched Lauren over cold turkey. Didn't mix it with the formula she had been on, just started giving her full strength Neocate bottles the day we came home with the formula.
Just a bit expensive, but so worth it. Is you dr. giving you a prescription for it?
:holidays:
ConnorsMommy 12-14-2005, 08:44 PM I did not breastfeed but Neocate has been a lifesaver for Connor! We must have tried 7 different formulas before this one and it has really helped! He still spits up but all the gas and loose bm's are gone since starting Neocate! The one thing I will tell you is that it is very thin so you'll want to ask about thickening it. We use Beechnut Rice cereal. I have heard of some Breastfed babies not liking the taste of Neocate since Breastmilk is so sweet but hopefully your little one will take it and it will help her like it has helped Connor!
monkeymom 12-14-2005, 08:45 PM We see the specialist on the 20th so I will get a prescription for it (even though its not needed) and then the battle with insurance will begin if Neocate is in fact the answer for us. As much I hate giving up BFing I just want something to help my daughter.
Pooka 12-15-2005, 09:25 AM for us the only "odd things" were poop stank, i mean stank bad! poop was greenish & her spit up smelled less like curdled milk & more like old sweetened yogurt. the first 3 days on it she spit like mad & pooped a ton! we then started thickening it & the spit up decreased but for the first 10 days-2 weeks she pooped like it was going out of style, at least 4 a day. (she had been very constipated before that.)
monkeymom 12-15-2005, 09:56 AM Well so far the first 3 bottles have been a success. She took them no problem. We haven't had much spit up either but she has gotten them during her less "spit up" times so we'll see how today goes.
When you say they still spit up is it shortly after the bottle or is it delayed spitting up? This is the main reason we're trying the Neocate is that she seems to not be digesting anything else and is spitting up 2-3 hours after she eats so I am hoping this doesn't happen with the Neocate.
LaurensMommy 12-15-2005, 10:33 AM Unfortunately, Lauren still spits up hours upon hours after eating, even on the Neocate. But the spit up sessions have decreased, if that make you feel any better.
ConnorsMommy 12-15-2005, 01:38 PM Connor also still spits up hours after his bottles on the Neocate. I'm glad to hear she's taking it without a problem!! I hope you get the results you are looking for!
Maya has found Neocate a difficult proposition and has not had any benefit on it even after 2 weeks. It is very hard to use for a reflux baby, as it is very thin so you need to thicken it but it is hard to get the thickening correct. It also tastes and smells disgusting Maya has deteriorated since she has taken Neocate. I am not sure if she would have done anyway, but the GI is trying to rule this out now that she is in hospital. I think Neocate can work for a lot of babies, but is not necessarily a panacea. We expected from the boards that it would be a panacea that if she responded to it, she could be off drugs for good. But many people on this board and other boards as well as Maya do have problems with Neocate. Some of them have a short term difficulty and then reap significant benefits. But unfortunately this has not happened with Maya and with hindsight I wish she had not taken Neocate, but at least we have explored the mspi route for potential benefits. At the end of the day time can only tell the benefits of a Neocate trial.
Nick, Maya's dad who is not a fan of Neocate at the moment!
I am sorry to hear that Maya is in the hospital. I was worried about Sara-she emailed me months ago, as our Maiya and yours had identical stories.
Our maiya is doing very poorly, but here in Canada, I cant get anyone to see her for another 6 months (ridiculous)!
I felt bad for Sara and have thought of her everyday. My husband is going through hell with us. Nick, I think Sara and I, and you and Sandeep should stay in touch. Our babies are identical, both not responding to anything at all. Sandeep is frustrated and I am getting depressed. Let's stay in touch.
Send my blessings to your wife and beautiful daughter
Johanne
Daughter of Maiya who is not responding to treatments, being breastfed, and is waking up every 15 minutes day and night (no exaggeration).
