View Full Version : Amoxicillan causing our problems?
Noah's Mom 12-12-2005, 05:35 PM I took Noah to see the ped today, and I was happy to see a different one in her office that has a baby his age with reflux. We've bonded.
He checked Noah's ears and everything looked fine, so he came to the conclusion that Noah's frequent wakings and screaming spells are due to a bad tummy reaction from the Amoxicillan. I hope its that easy! He thinks that this means we could try the other formula at a later date and maybe see no problems.
Anyone have the same problems? Amoxicillan causing serious gas issues?
ElisMom 12-12-2005, 06:06 PM It could totally be that! I hope it is too and that he will be feeling better:-D
Administrator 12-12-2005, 06:20 PM Yes, it's entirely possible. Any antibiotic can/will cause stomach upsets b/c it messes up the good bacteria in the stomach while it goes after the bad stuff.
Noah's Mom 12-12-2005, 07:12 PM Hey Roni...I didn't see a "tired" mood until now. Must have missed it! Thanks! Guess I'm not "dead" anymore.:-D
CadysMommy 12-12-2005, 07:36 PM Cady had minor stomach upset while on amoxicillan, but she had MAJOR issues with augmentin, night waking, stomach cramping, diarrhea and vomiting. So, the simple answer is yes, I can totally see amoxicillan causing stomach upset so bad it would cause Noah to wake frequently at night.
Noah's Mom 12-12-2005, 07:48 PM I know this is probably an impossible question to answer, but anyone know how long it will take to get the Amoxicillan out of his system? I gave him a dose this morning, but the ped had us throw it out and skip the rest of the doses since Noah's ear appears to be fine, now. I'm REALLY hoping for sleep tonight...
CadysMommy 12-12-2005, 07:56 PM It took Cady about 4 days for the effects of the Augmentin to get out of her system. But, in her case, it wasn't the drug that had to leave her system as I'm sure that was out long before her symptoms cleared up. The horrible effects lasted way longer than I'm sure the medication did. So, honestly, I don't know. I REALLY hope, though that Noah sleeps better for you tonight.

Wow. That completely busted my bubble. Noah's reaction sounds nothing like Cady's, so maybe he'll move through it faster. He didn't vomit or have diarrhea, although his BM's have been strange since he started taking it. BUT, he is obviously experiencing some cramping and LOTS of gas.
Samuels mom 12-12-2005, 11:42 PM I really hope it was just the augmenton causing Noah's problems. I have no idea how long it takes to get out of the little one's system, but I do know that kids metabolize meds faster than adults so it could move out sooner than later.
I am thinking sleepy thoughts for you!
Good luck tonight!
CadysMommy 12-13-2005, 05:28 AM Maggie, I think her symptoms held on so long, because they had gotten so severe that there was just no turning back with them, you know? She ahd to fight through them for a while. Hope Noah feels better today.
Noah's Mom 12-13-2005, 09:57 AM Constipation probably isn't helping this, right?
EmmasMommy 12-13-2005, 10:26 AM Constipation is evil, I tell 'ya.
It could be making it worse. Poor Noah! :(
Noah's Mom 12-13-2005, 10:35 AM Why are you angry, Amanda?
EmmasMommy 12-13-2005, 10:39 AM I'm mad at myself....see updates. :(
CadysMommy 12-13-2005, 10:43 AM Constipation can do a number on these kiddos, Maggie. I'm sorry your little man isn't feeling well.
scarlet 12-16-2005, 09:33 PM Maggie. Thank you.
I think I may have figured out why Parker gets his screaming fits. They happen always after penicillan about 2 days after stopping.
Does anyone think its possible that the antibiotics do something to his tummy and causes him this pain? I asked the Dr and she didn't comment much so I thought it may be a fluke, but if you think about it it makes a lot of sense. Next time I am asking for a different type. What type has worked for other kids with penicillan tummy reaction?
Another reason I was thinking along these lines was because this week I had tonsilitus-Never had it before and the Dr thinks I am run down- who isn't with a sick baby. But every time I take the penecillan it it makes me feel real sick. Maybe parkers the same.
Heres for hope
Rachel
Noah's Mom 12-18-2005, 09:54 PM I'm pretty sure the antibiotic was causing some problems for Noah, because he is LESS gassy than he was when he was on it. But, he'll continue to remain a mystery because he is STILL waking up bloated and gassy, but not nearly as much. Wierd.:-?
