Hi!
I had a question regarding thickening formula - how many tablespoons of rice or oatmeal do you add to a bottle? My daughter is a silent refluxer on prevacid and does well with Alimentum. However, she gurgles still so I thought this might help. Has anyone tried oatmeal? Our GI suggested it if she dosen't do well with the rice cereal? Thanks! Theresa

We thickened Good Start with 1 Tbs. per every 2 ozs. This amount worked very well for us.

Hi there... I use the formula scoop to measure the cereal so depending on how my daughter is doing, I either do 1 scoop to 3 ounces or 1 scoop to 2 ounces.
Just a note* I pour the formula (she uses mainly rtf for thickness issues) in the blender, scoop in the cereal and blend for about 30-45 seconds to make it smooth and easier to come out the nipples.
Hope that helps... you really have to find a consistancy that works for your child. Sometimes a little thinner sometimes a little thicker.
The suggestion I have heard 1 tsp per ounce or 1 tbs per 2 ounces.
As for the cereal I mainly use Beechnut (no milk or soy in it) Rice but do go back and forth with Oatmeal if I feel my daughter is getting a little bound up on rice or extra gassy on it.
Good luck!!

I mix 2 tablespoons into a 4oz bottle in Catherine's bedtime bottle for extra calories. She doesn't require thickening for the sake of thickening.
I use either rice or oatmeal, whatever I have on hand.

I've used anywhere from 1 tbs./2 oz. to just 1 tsp./1 oz.. Oatmeal would never flow right for Noah, so we always had to stick with rice.
I started out doing 1 tsp per oz with rice cereal but found it bounded Austin up too much so now I have switched to oatmeal instead. Altough I think after reading this that I need to try the blender thing because the oatmeal seems to be a little thicker and chunkier.

Thanks for the info - I have a question which is pretty stupid but I want to make sure I am doing this right! Do you make up the cereal (mix rice or oatmeal flakes with water) and then add it to the formula, or do you just add the oatmeal or rice flakes to the formula and mix that up? Theresa

You just add the rice/oatmeal flakes right into the prepared formula.
