View Full Version : Solid feeding behavior
ZacsMom 12-09-2005, 04:35 PM Zac has been doing this for quite a while and I really don't know why. I thought it was a phase, but he never stopped.
First of all, you would think this child is STARVED to DEATH when he sees his jars of baby food. He whines when he sees it and is whining the entire time unless the spoon is in his mouth. He's whining for more while he still HAS food in there. It drives me nuts because he's just whining and whining through the whole dinner. Zac never tells me he's finished, I have to just stop feeding him. He is quiet and content when he's SHOVELING the gerber puffs down his throat but the SECOND he takes the last one and puts it in his mouth, he's whining for more!
ANyone else ever go through this????? My child eats A LOT and I really don't think it's that he could possibly have room for MORE food.
*Let me clarify he's not whining because he does NOT want to eat (unless its something he does not like), he's whining because he just wants more and more and more and more.
Becky in NM 12-09-2005, 06:44 PM Sorry, Sara, I can't relate! Despite all the eating, Zac isn't heavy, is he? He looks just right in your photo. Have you mentioned this to your ped? Did it just start with solids? I'm thinking no... he loves nursing, too, right?
Noah's Mom 12-09-2005, 06:50 PM Hmmmm....no experience here. Since Zac is not super big, maybe you could try adding a few extra spoonfuls per meal and see if he becomes more satisfied. I don't know, Sara, just an idea.
CadysMommy 12-09-2005, 07:00 PM Zac doesn't seem like he's gained a ton of weight from his overeating. Is he uncomfortable after he eats like if you'd eat too much? Maybe ask his ped. at his next well-baby check...
LaurensMommy 12-09-2005, 07:38 PM Sara... I can relate somewhat.. Lauren does whine during her dinner, however, she stops when she is full. She also tells me when she is full... she shakes her head no or just won't open her mouth.
The whining drives me nuts too sometimes... she especially does it when I'm not feeding her fast enough.
ZacsMom 12-09-2005, 07:52 PM Sandy,
Zac whines as if i'm not feeding him fast enough.
Maggie, I have started adding extra bites and he just doesn't quit, I dont want the poor kid to get sick from being so stuffed. He already eats 2 full stage 2 jars at lunch and dinner and now i'm adding almost another HALF of fruit to this and he just keeps accepting it!
Judy and Becky,
His 9 mo. checkup is Tuesday so i will mention it again, last time i mentioend it she just giggled. Zac is not overweight, He is in the 50% percentile I believe. He hasn't gained ANY weight in 3 months. He doesn't love to nurse as much as he use to becky, but he started this whining when we started solids. I guess he'd nurse anytime I give it up, too.
CadysMommy 12-09-2005, 08:01 PM Sara, could Zac have high metabolism, if it's even possible in a baby (probably sounds stupid, but I'll take a leap)...it seems like a good discussion to have with the ped. I'd wonder about that sort of behavior myself, just as much as I'd wonder if he wasn't eating at all. I hope your ped. at least addresses it seriously, because you are seriously wondering about it.
Cady just sits patiently while I get the next bite ready and when she's done she either sprays food all over doing a raspberry or she rips the spoon from my hand and flings it away, along with her cup and anything else that's on her tray. These are not subtle ways to say she's done. I'm really, really trying to teach her to say "all done" or the sign for all done, so she can stop being so obnoxious about it.

THAT is histarical!!! I bet it's not after the first three times though. LoL
Zac is opening his mouth impatiently for the next bit AS the food is going down his throat from the last one. He really acts as if he's starving! Then he's barfing it up if i feed him too much.
sixdogssixcats 12-09-2005, 08:13 PM Sara,
I've always been told babies will not, of their own accord, overeat. Maybe you should just keep feeding him until he gives you some sign he doesn't want any more and then see what happens. One experiment won't do any permanent harm.
Catherine is very clear when she's had enough. She cries, twists in her high chair to get out, smacks the spoon out of my hand, sweeps anything on her high chair tray on to the floor ... I try to anticipate this as it's a scene that gets ugly fast.
CadysMommy 12-09-2005, 08:16 PM Cady and Catherine must be having discussions behind our backs, Lesley about how to tell us they're done. What a mess they make. I've just now begun to notice the first signs of her being done, just so we can avoid that mess.
ZacsMom 12-09-2005, 08:43 PM Sara,

I guess I could try that...it just seems like he's eating SO much already. Hmmm will try. Can't imagine THREE full stage 2 jars but that's what it may turn out to.
The child eats two stage two jars +... about 30 gerber puffs AND 4 oz. of juice/water....THEN he nurses an hour later. This is lunch and dinner.
I'm totally NOT bragging, i'm almost a bit worried. There are days where I can "hear" the stuff swooshing around in his belly. WIll definitely bring it up at next app. I did email her asking her if I was not feeding him enough do to the stall on his weight. I wrote her a detailed daily menu of what he eats and asked her if i'm not feeding him enough. She told me "his diet is perfect." Did not add to that though...so will bring it up again.
EmmasMommy 12-09-2005, 08:54 PM Sorry I can't help much, Sara. :( Emma clamps her mouth shut and shakes her head on the first bite. I have to use distractions, (singing..she plays with a spoon, etc.), to get her to eat off a spoon.
Hasn't Zac's weight remained the same for a bit? Maybe he's going through a growth spurt? I would do like Lesley said and just feed him more. Let us know how it goes! :D
Noah's Mom 12-09-2005, 09:08 PM What about mixing in some rice cereal (or whatever he tolerates) to add some bulk to it? I do this with Noah's YoBaby now (he likes it, too!) and it seem to help him stay full, plus add calories. Maybe this would help Zac without adding another jar if you're worried about it. I wouldn't be, though. It sounds like worst case scenario would be that he loses his lunch once, then you'd know to cut him off earlier next time.
Amanda--Noah's feeding time is pretty elaborate also. He insists that he holds one spoon while I feed him with another. Sometimes, he even steals the second and I have to use a third. Lots of sound effects, too. When he's full, he just won't open, which he sometimes does when he's hungry, so I'm typically lost during meal time. :?
EmmasMommy 12-09-2005, 09:09 PM Smart idea about adding cereal, Maggie! :D
Yes. I actually dread meals and she hates the sight of her highchair. :(
EmmasMommy 12-09-2005, 09:27 PM Sara...
I had another idea when I was folding laundry just a minute ago.
Could he be comfort feeding? Judy's daughter, Cady, did that when she was off her Prevacid a few days. She was eating and drinking more than usual, from what I remember.
Maybe the half-tab isn't enough. That may also explain his arching/stiffening during feeds, too.
I hope that I'm wrong.. :( .but it's just another thought.
sixdogssixcats 12-09-2005, 09:31 PM I mix cereal into all Catherine's fruits and veggies. It needs to be paste-like consistency so I can scrape it off on the roof of her mouth. Otherwise, she'll let it run out of her mouth. It gets in extra calories, too. I mix 2 tablespoons into one stage 2 jar, and that makes two meals.
EmmasMommy 12-09-2005, 09:32 PM Good idea, Lesley. Emma does better with thicker babyfood. Maybe I'll try that with her vegies/dinners.
Thanks........ :D
sixdogssixcats 12-09-2005, 09:37 PM Amanda,
Until the last few days, Catherine also kicked and screamed when I picked her up and approacher her high chair. I quit using it for a couple of weeks. I'd feed her sitting on the floor with some toys, but the place she ate best was standing at the baby gate that blocks her out of the kitchen. She'd stand on one side and look up at me standing on the other side. When she looked up, her mouth would automatically open. And she was so focused on remaining standing that she didn't mind eating. The last few days have been somewhat successful in the high chair, but depending on what her [high maintenance] mood is like, probably half the time I don't even attempt solids at night. I just add cereal to her bedtime bottle and call it "dinner."

Sounds EXACTLY like Emma. I'll have to try the non-highchair route. Emma eats well if I hold her, too. Thanks, Lesley!
You're a fountain of advice tonight for me!
We add the cereal to her bottle at night and her nightfeed if her calories are low that day, too.
She just can't stomach all that food. :?
CadysMommy 12-09-2005, 09:57 PM I don't know why I didn't think of that, Amanda! You're right, Cady was eating like fiend when she was off the Prevacid for a few days. She couldn't get enough food, crying constantly to be in her highchair, not going in fast enough. I'd take her out, she'd cry to get back in or want formula whenever she wasn't eating solids. It was severe, that's why I posted about it in the first place. Duh! I'm so not with it sometimes.
Maybe his Prevacid does need to be raised back up. This does sound a lot like Cady was doing. Sorry I didn't remember it before. Thanks, Amanda for reminding me.
EmmasMommy 12-09-2005, 11:40 PM Thanks, Amanda for reminding me.
You're welcome, and don't be sorry! I just vividly remember your post because I was thinking to myself...."hmm, maybe if I take Em off her Prevacid she'll WANT to start eating."
I was totally kidding, though.
ZacsMom 12-10-2005, 07:11 AM Amand and Judy???? He has been back on his FULL dose of half tab in morning and half in evening for quite a while now. I posted weeks ago about deciding to put him back on his full dose.
About the comfort eating...... I had thought about that but I don't really think it could be as again, he has ALWAYS done this and it's nothing new. I"m just getting frustrated as I keep waiting and waiting for him to stop this and he hasn't yet. It's just getting to the point where I'm thinking it's not a silly phase as I was thinking before. I dunno...this morning I gave him his full cereal dose of barley (5tbs) and a full jar of applesauce. He had about 20-30 puffs and his water/juice bottle. He whines when I put the empty food jars on the table.
At one point months back, the pediatrician said that that is normal and that this actually helps build their vocabular or something along that line and that its exercising for his mouth. that's the the exact way she put it bu something along those lines. He's not really "humming" like he use to this is whining, full out whining. I guess she hasn't heard it.
At one point at one of his checkups he was making that annoying noise and she said that is not whining. :? So %#*& if I know!
CadysMommy 12-10-2005, 08:00 AM I'm sorry, Sara! I completely forgot that too. Hmmmm...I don't know, then. Zac has me stumped.
Noah's Mom 12-10-2005, 08:10 AM I'd feed her sitting on the floor with some toys, but the place she ate best was standing at the baby gate that blocks her out of the kitchen. The things we do to feed our kids!
EmmasMommy 12-10-2005, 08:35 AM Sorry, Sara. I totally forgot, too.
ZacsMom 12-10-2005, 01:33 PM SO here's the funny thing:
Zac needs distractions for eating too fast...the opposite of what most of these GERDlings need! I put a CD in the computer to play music and it played that psychedelic (sp?) color blending stuff on the screen, he watched it off and on and actually took breaks inbetween bites. I also have a little drumming snowman who plays music on the dining room table that I play to entertain him while he's eating. The batteries just died, what does that tell ya? LoL...I put two teething toys on his tray and now and then he chomps on them inbetween bites so he's at least taking some bit of breaks inbetween bites. <whew>
He had half a stage 1 jar of chicken mixed w/a whole stage 2 jar of mixed veggies and a half stage 2 jar of corn, he also had a whole jar of plums with pears and apples and his usual gerber puffs. He piles those things in his mouth SO FAST its nuts. He then proceeded to drink his water/juice bottle and this was all from 12-1230. By 1:20 he was DIEING to nurse. He nursed a good session w/no pulling off. This child has a never ending pit in his stomache I think. What ever happened to "their stomache is about the size of their fist" anyway?! That's about ONE jar of baby food if you ask me. I guess his is already stretched. Let's hope he's put on some weight at this checkup on Tues.
Noah's Mom 12-10-2005, 02:36 PM Sara
Someone else mentioned the "high metabolism" thing. Maybe thats it. I've known people who just eat like there's no tomorrow and never become over weight. Maybe thats Zac's deal?

OMG! That means that he can eat almost THREE jars at one meal?!?! Sara, can you bottle up some of his metabolism and send it my way?
