Zac has been stiffening often while nursing. I thought it was reflux, then I thought it was gas...which I still have a feeling it MAY be. However, when I rock him giving him his bottle he does not do this, and he is in the same position I nurse him in (on purpose to see if he does it). I'm confused...could it maybe be teeth bothering him when he sucks differently at the breast as opposed to the bottle nipple?? That's the only thing I can think of. ANy other idears?

What do you mean by stiffening? Noah's arches make him stiff as a board. He does this during and after bottles...but usually just during. Could it be that?

yeah, he's kinda stiffening his legs and pushing his butt up and down and looking uncomfortable. He then pulls off several times. Sometimes he cries and others he doesnt...well not "cries" whimpers and puts his fist in his mouth and then tries to continue.

Oh and he never does this w/the bottle.

This was my first indication that there was something going on with Noah. He would do this when he was only a few weeks old, and he still does it today, although its turned into a much more dramatic and noisy event. That's strange that he doesn't do it with the bottle, though. I would think that it wouldn't matter if it was a reflux related arch. Maybe someone else will know...

Hmmm, it sounds like it could be teeth, especially if he pulls off and sticks his fist in his mouth. I would think that the breast and bottle require different mouth motions and sucking patterns. (I think a lactation consultant once told me that in order to breastfeed, a baby has to use the lips or gums to squeeze the nipple before sucking, so maybe that is bothering him. Sorry if this is TMI  ).

I hope little Zac feels better soon, and he gets some teefs!

Sheila,
I"m thinking this also. He uses the playtex nurser bottles that are supposed to be closest to the shape of the breast, which they are BUT...They certainly aren't exactly like the breast and I think he has to suck differently w/both as you said. Not "TMI"!!! We're all women here no big deal. I wouldn't have made this post if I were afraid of "TMI". :D
I was initially convinced that it was gas or reflux...but since he has NEVER done this w/the bottle I'm just starting to think it has to be the difference in sucking which would lead me to believe it's something w/the mouth which leads me to think it's his teeth.
