Hello there. Just a question on Prilosec dosing. Maya has been on 10mg Prilosec capsules a day. Previously I put the granules in the capsules in jam or pear purey, but she pukes it up regularly and her refluxing has got worse again and she has failed to put on weight for the third week in a row. Maya is on the seventh day of Neocate and is very variable in her feeding and sometimes has 1.5 -2 oz at a feed and other times if we are lucky 3 oz. We feed her 3 hourly 8 times a day and concentrated the Neocate up to 25 cal per oz. We are also adding a thickener as she will regurgitate the Neocate unthickened.

We saw the GI yesterday and after no weight gain he has put her on a motility drug Domipridone and upped her Prilosec dose to 7.5g twice a day. In order to help us administer it to Maya he prescribed Sodium bicarbonate solution 8.4% to give it to her in. This was very expensive at $90 a bottle. It required us to mix the capsules in 10ml of the solution and to give 7.5ml to Maya. 7.5ml of the revolting thin liquid was too much for Maya and she promptly puked it up! Anyway my poor husband who has missed quite a lot of time from work from this promptly went out and got orange juice and I counted out 3/4 of the capsules and added it to the spoon and fed it to Maya. This seemed to work okay. How do other people adminster Prilosec? I am considering asking about the Prevacid fastab (Zoton in the UK), but I know that they are very much into Prilosec in the UK and probably will not give it.

The GI has told me that we should not chart Maya's feeding any more as it is too stressful for him and us and that we need to see what happens in a couple of weeks. I hope that the new strong dose of Prilosec, together with the motility drugs help and that the Neocate brings benefits. So far Neocate after a week has brought no benefit to Maya.

Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

Can't you get Prilosec compounded into a syrup? My daughter took it that way with no problems from about the age of 1 month until she was 7 months, when we switched to Prevacid solutabs purely for convenience.

Our Prilosec is coupounded into a very thin syrup. I've heard others say that not all pharmacies do this, but I live in a smaller area and all three pharmacies here will do it with no problem. You can then have the syrup flavored. We have them flavor it with grape.

We always used cherry. It seemed to cover up the taste better than grape (which we tried once). We passed on the tutti-frutti choice, lol!

Hmmm...maybe we'll try cherry next time. Noah's starting to fight us on the Prilosec. He likes change.

You guys are lucky in the States. None of our pharmacies do syrup suspensions. Are there any other suggestions that people have?

We just switched from prilosec to prevacid solutabs and the solutabs are sooooo much easier to deal with. Also, would she tolerate more formula if it was not concentrated???? My son will not tolerate the concentrated formula at all--not even at 22 cal/oz.
