View Full Version : Worried about Sugar Intake
Noah's Mom 12-08-2005, 11:51 AM Okay, as you all know, Noah's picky and HE decides what he eats, not me. I've been concerned about the amount of sugar he is taking in each day. :?
1 Yobaby (sugar)
1 Jar of Oatmeal with fruit (sugar)
1/4 cup barley mixed with 2-3 ounces of white grape juice (sugar)
3-4 ounces of apple/banana juice total used to flavor bottes (sugar)
I'm also adding a few bites of other foods per the GI in addition to each of these. I know that Noah needs to keep eating, so I probably won't make any adjustments for now, but what do you all think about all of this sugar? Does my son have a sweet tooth or what?!!?!?
Janette 12-08-2005, 12:05 PM As long as it's natural sugars through fruits, I wouldn't be too concerned, Maggie. Will he also eat veggies?

We're working on veggies. I can get a few bites in at each meal. The only one that he likes (greenbeans/mashed potato combo) made him sicker than ever (gas, I think). I'm working hard, though, so hopefully someday I can replace one of these with a full jar of veggies. Can't say I see it in the near future, though. :(
Nathan'sMommy 12-08-2005, 12:16 PM I wouldn't worry about it either, Maggie. The sugars naturally found in fruit are a lot better for them than artificial sweeteners and corn syrup and stuff. Sounds like he is just smart when it comes to foods! (I would pick a yummy yogurt over veggies anyday. :D )
karie 12-08-2005, 12:40 PM The only thing about the juice is that it can cause diarrhea but if he is constipated it may help him!
OwensMom 12-08-2005, 02:28 PM I wouldn't worry about it, like everybody else said it's a natural sweet and not artificial. I'm having a hard time with Owen and solids too, hang in there it will get better.
ZacsMom 12-08-2005, 07:01 PM Can you maybe try to sneak veggies under a spoon of fruit? I have to do that on occassion when he gets sick of his veg/meat combo. I have to scoop a bit of that and put fruit on top of it.
Noah's Mom 12-08-2005, 07:56 PM I guess I shouldn't be too worried since all of the foods are baby foods and there is nothing artificial about them. I am also guilty of giving him 1/2 of a dessert after his evening meal if he's low on intake for the day. I know that its got to have plenty sugar in it as well, but I hate putting him to bed with so little in his tummy, and he inhales the gerber vanilla custard. (I would too.)
Sara...I'm trying not to manipulate feeding time right now. I did this at first, and he starting barely opening his mouth to test what was on the spoon before taking it all. He found veggies under his yogurt one too many times, and he finally got mad and cried about it. I'm working hard to get him to enjoy other tastes, but I think it will be a long process.
On a positive note, he ate 1/2 jar of sweet potatoes tonight! He wasn't too enthusiastic about it, but I was so proud! This is a real milestone for him!
karie 12-08-2005, 09:17 PM yeah Noah!! Keep it going
Karie
OwensMom 12-09-2005, 12:04 AM WTG Noah, it's a start.
What if you try and mix a little veggies in his fruit and gradually add more veggies over the time and less fruit. Just a suggestion.
Hope he eats some more veggies today for you.

That's a great idea, but Noah likes plain fruit just as much as he likes plain veggies. He does like bananas (and anything else flavored banana), but last time I gave him a 1/2 jar, he was sick all night. He doesn't like apples, peaches, or pears... I've tried the same concept by mixing with yogurt, but he figures it out to quickly, then refuses the yogurt. :(
OwensMom 12-09-2005, 02:42 PM Aww, I'm so sorry that he doesn't like the fruit either. Owen likes all of it pretty much but his little body doesn't tolerate it too good. Either he throws it up undigested hours after eating eat or he gets constipated, which right now he does have both of them.
