View Full Version : Could this be DGE?
OwensMom 12-07-2005, 04:01 PM Owen started to spit up his lunch at around dinnertime again and it's all undigested.
For example today I gave him zwieback mixed with pears and breastmilk at 1:15 and he spit up a little at around 2:30 but I didn't worry about it. But later at around 5 he spit up about 2 tablespoons of it again and it was undigested.
Yesterday I gave him spinach with mixed cereal for dinner at 5:30 and he still continually spit it up at around 9-ish.
How can we find out if he has DGE?
ElisMom 12-07-2005, 04:06 PM An emptying study can be performed. That is how we got our diagnosis. Sounds like it is DGE. Sorry! Does he normally do that? Or, do you think he may have a little bug or something. More likely DGE though...
OwensMom 12-07-2005, 04:15 PM He did do it for a while than stopped and now he does it again.
Does he have to drink the barium when they do the study? And how is it done?
Sorry about all the questions? :?
ElisMom 12-07-2005, 04:18 PM NO, NO, its ok, that is what we are here for. Yes, they do drink something but amazingly I have heard and E did this as well, they drink it! They flavor it and put it in whatever will work. They will get it in them.
The hard part of the test is they have to be filmed for 2 hours. They had to hold Eli down with sandbags for 2 hours and we had to try and keep him entertained. Not fun, but it was worth it to see that his tummy was NOT emptying.
OwensMom 12-07-2005, 04:23 PM Oh joy, that's gonna be a lot of fun but if we can figure out what's wrong with him, I'd do anything right now.
ElisMom 12-07-2005, 04:32 PM Yes, that is the point we were at. I actually cried during the test, not out of sadness because I already knew, but to see what we feared and have it confirmed was good for us. And, it sucks to go through it but once its over you will be glad you did, either way.
OwensMom 12-07-2005, 04:39 PM I hope they flavor the barium here, they don't have anything to flavor Zantac or other medicines. That sucks when you are stationed overseas and can't really pick to which doctor you want to go.
So if it is confirmed that he has DGE what are they gonna do about it. I don't want to put him on Reglan again since we had a horrible experience with that.
ElisMom 12-07-2005, 04:49 PM Hmm, you can try bethanechol or erythromyicin. We ended up having Elis surgerically corrected. It has made a huge difference for him. Atleast if you know, there may be things or meds you can try to help improve it.
EmmasMommy 12-07-2005, 08:28 PM Is Owen constipated? Emma only shows DGE symptoms when she's constipated. She didn't poop for 5 days and during that time she didn't want to eat and was spitting up solids 4-5 hours later.
Now that she's pooping well, it doesn't happen.
I would still talk to your doctor, but I just thought I'd let you know about Emma's experience.
OwensMom 12-08-2005, 12:04 AM Actually yes he is constipated, he poops almost every day but it's not a lot and what comes out is so hard :( . I started putting prunes in all his solids that he is eating and he only eats solids twice a day, but no difference yet :? . He takes Prilosec and his ped said it can cause diahrrea but still waiting for that to happen. Poor little one, his buns are so red.
I'm glad to hear that Emma is pooping well again, she deserves a break.
EmmasMommy 12-08-2005, 12:27 AM Actually yes he is constipated, he poops almost every day but it's not a lot and what comes out is so hard :(
That might be making the spitting up/puking hours later even worse. When refluxers are constipated....things get backed up.
Have you tried using a suppository or can you call your doctor and see if they'll let you use Milk of Magnesia? It's the ONLY thing that works for Emma.
Poor Owen. :(
OwensMom 12-08-2005, 02:37 AM That's good to know about the constiapation and spitting/throwing up more, thanks Amanda.
He pooped a little more this morning and it's a litte softer but still not normal. So maybe if I give him a little more prunes in the solids it works, I'll try that and than I ask the ped on monday if I can use the milk of magnesia if it comes back again. I actually have some at the house but I'll see how he does today.
I was talking to my friend earlier and I told her the only positive thing about the constipation is that I don't have to wash out his cloth diapers and can just dump it in the toilet. I hope I get to wash them out again soon, bring on those messy poop diapers Owen  , I thought I would never look forward to something like that.
Janette 12-08-2005, 08:44 AM Actually yes he is constipated, he poops almost every day but it's not a lot and what comes out is so hard :(

Another thing that could make it worse is a virus or a cold. I'd hold off on the testing just for now until the constipation is gone, though. There's no sense putting the poor little guy through a test if it's not necessary. If it ends up being DGE (and I sincerely hope it's not!), there are lots of meds. out there to help get the food through the system more quickly. Evan was diagnosed (by the ped.) with DGE simply from what was going on. He never needed any testing.
CourtneyM 12-09-2005, 11:20 AM They actually didn't have to hold Aidan down during the test. The way they do it here, they didn't have to. We were extremely lucky. What they do is let him drink the barium that was mixed with his formula. Then they did pictures. Went and walked around came back and did more every so often. That is how they did it here!
ElisMom 12-09-2005, 11:37 AM Oh, that sound wonderful Courtney, I sure wish they would have done it that way for Eli... that sounds much easier. It just depends on where you go, I guess :D
OwensMom 12-09-2005, 02:49 PM We shall see what is gonna happen next, he has an appointment monday and I'll tell the ped about it. Yesterday I had to change shirts 3 times within 3 hours, he had cereal with fruit at 9:15 in the am and he threw them up at 7:20 last night.
Today so far he only spit up in the am and refluxing here and there so hopefully it was just a little flare up or something. Hope I didn't jinx myself now :? .
ElisMom 12-09-2005, 04:54 PM Hope you didn't either! I know how that goes with our little refluxers LOL.
