We just switched to prevacid solutabs. The switch is due to Sam not tolerating his feeds. The GI feels like it is either acid or allergy. We went up on the prilosec with no change and so we were switched to prevacid because we are running out of things to try. He has been crying thru most of his feeds and like I posted before still svratching at his face. I think it is most likely an allergy, but we are trying one thing at a time. Because he was allready scheduled for a MRI they have decided to scope him while he is still sedated to look for anything abnormal.

Well I guess I should get to my question, for those who use the solutab when do you give it. My GI said I can do 1 time a day or split the tab and do twice a day. What has worked for you guys???? I started by giving one tab this evening--my reasoning is that his nights are the worst so maybe night dosing would be the best. I guess it will be trial and error.

I have a feeling that they are going to switch him to neocate after the scope, but I guess they wanted to see if the new PPI would make a difference.

Amanda I can't really be of any help regarding the solutabs because Connor cannot tolerate the PPI's but I just wanted to say I hope the Prevacid works real soon and Sam feels better!!!

Hi Amanda,
We always split the dose between am and pm. But I think some kiddos (Emma, I think?) do better with one dose. I hope that this is the magic med for him!!! Crossing my fingers and toes...

Catherine started out split at bedtime and wake-up in the morning, but about a week ago, I started giving her a whole solutab at bedtime (also rationalizing that she might sleep better if given the whole pill at night. However, as it's time-release, this shouldn't make a bit of difference). She seems fine with once-a-day dosing.

Ian has his in one dose, first thing in the morning. He was refluxing a lot more when I gave it to him after breakfast and several people here said to do it before any food at all. So our regular mornings are: wake up, go downstairs and get the dose in him, then change the diaper, get dressed for the day, and start slowly making the morning bottle. Pretty soon, 30 minutes have passed and he's really happy to see that bottle. :)

Good memory, Shelia!

Yep....Emma is doing much better on one-time-a-day, (whole tab in the morning). It's not helping with her sleep habits; however, she is eating much better. :D

On the other hand, we also started Zantac at the same time...at bedtime. And, we also switched her constipation meds and she's having 1-2 bowel movements a day versus 2-3 times a week. So, it's probably a combination of everything.

But, our GI said that it's best in the morning b/c the stomach is "most empty" at this time.

I think it depends on the child though.

Mag has to have two doses a day. If she only had it in the morning she was up puking all night. If she only had a dose at night she wouldn't eat all day.

Kylie takes 1/2 tablet am and pm. I've never tried it with one dose though. If she has a difficult reflux time, it is always in the evening. I'm almost afraid to try giving it at a different time since she does so well most of the time.

Sarah takes a liquid form of prevacid. the parmacy has to make it up every 2 weeks. I was thinking that switching to the solutab would be easier. It sounds like a 6 month old can take the solutab- is that right? Is the solutab easy to manage- does it dissolve quickly?

We just switched Kylie from the liquid to the packets and now to the solutabs. She is only 3 mos. old and they are so easy to administer. I just tuck into the side of her cheek and she sucks away at it. Occasionally, some of the partially dissolved tablet will try to come out and I either push it back in with my finger or give her the pacifier. Either one does the trick. We are so happy with the solutabs effectiveness compared to the liquid and it's much easier to give on the go as well.

Babies metabolize meds very fast, that's why it's reccomended to do more than once a day dosing. Even though it's supposed to last 24 hours, that's for adults, not children. Evan gets 7.5mg every 12 hours approx. I wouldn't even switch meds, I would switch his formula ASAP! No reflux med is going to work more than likely w/ allergy induced reflux. Evan has a whole long list of allergies that we've found and he's finally getting to the point where his meds work. He's moving on to Neocate Jr now since he just had his birthday. Good luck,

What are the solutabs?? I hear so much about them here, but haven't ever tried them. We currently use the capsules - I pour it into his food in the am and pm. Sam currently gets 15 mg 2x a day. Maybe I will have to ask at the pharmacy about the solutabs??

Ohhhh, yes, definitely ask about the solutabs. They are SO much easier. Just pop the tab insto their mouth, or dissolve it in a syringe, and it tastes really good.
