Okay here is my vent of DGE for the day.... I have a friend whose son is 2 months old that sees an FNP in a pediatric office. Her son is on Zantac but she doesn't even give him the Zantac all of the time. They came over here the other day and this is what was said:::
He started spitting up awful and being the concerned person I am with what I have went through I said are you still giving him the Zantac. She says well sometimes. I said are you supposed to give it to him all of the time or when? She said oh just when I think he needs it... I'm thinking do what?!?!?! So she goes on to say well my doctor says that only premature babies can have acid reflux or GERD. Oh and I mentioned what your son has (DGE) and he says that it is very rare and that he probably doesn't even have it. I'm thinking okay I go to a GI SPECIALIST and your dr is what? A FNP??? I wanted to say A LOT!!!!!!!!! But I was nice and kept my big mouth shut and thought a lot of not nice things... lol
Okay sorry that's my vent

People like that drive me crazy because they dont realize the damage that they could be doing to their child. I would like to go and smack their health provider, they need to get a clue. Have your friend come and meet my four kids if she wants to see reflux in nonpreemies and the problems with dge. I hope that this child doesnt have to suffer through all of this.

You are a better person than me because my mouth would have been open and would have just laid it on your friend. I do hope that she comes around soon.

Please give her a copy of the brochure, or guide, or something. I can't stand to hear of people to incredibly misinformed!! She needs to be educated.

Iain was far from a preemie, in fact he was induced at 10 days late and my other two boys were technically right on time (Iain does have DGE, but not as bad as many here on the board) Preemies do have a higher instance of it, but it is not at all an exclusive preemie ailment. Do get the brochures and keep them handy for sure. I have given them to many of the professionals we deal and dealt with, plus daycare, some family, and friends. It sometimes helps to have it in writing and give them something professional to have.

 Ignorance is bliss.

Oh it isn't that she isn't informed at alll!!! She has even read ARTICLES from this website . She just thinks her FNP's word is the gospel and it drives me nuts. Her child that is not even 3 months old weighs the same and is the same height as my year old son.... now that isn't because my son is just little. I know my son is little for his age.... but she puts TONS of cereal in his bottle. The reason???? She says it makes him sleep through the night!!! Now I have never done this and know little about it, but I do know that my pediatrician had always told us NEVER to do it for that reason. I do have brochures... She has saw Aidan's testing and everything.
I even told her that I thought her son needs to see a GI doctor because I feel she is hurting him and I want her to do the right thing for him and that I am really concerned. I wasn't trying to be out of line or anything. I just really AM concerned. Was I out of line???
Anywayz.... this is something that is really bothering me and I don't want to see this baby hurt because of plain stupidity

Wow. That is amazing.

You can lead the horse to water... but you can't make it drink!

I get very annoyed with people who just assume the doc is right, very frustrating.

I mean I listen to our doctor and take into CONSIDERATION what they say, but I don't think EVERYTHING he says is the gospel if you get what I mean. Doctors have opinions just like everyone else. Doctors can also be given inaccurate info just like everyone else as well. Also, younger doctors sometimes have different information than older ones as well. I don't make decisions quickly either. I listen to what the doctor says then I do research on my own as well and talk to other people that have been through the same things and take into consideration what they have been through. Then I choose the right option for Aidan. That's just ME though!!!!
Is putting cereal in a bottle even recommended nowdays??? just wondering

Just to play devil's advocate (though I totally agree your friend has a bad doctor), reflux IS more common in preemies, and our GI prescribed Zantac for Daniel to use as needed. But this was after he'd been on a PPI awhile and I finally figured out he actually seemed better without it (after taking him off for a ph probe) because it was upsetting his stomach. Still, I find D does better if I give him his Zantac every day, even if he's not in a pukey phase. He's way more interested in his food when he's on the meds.

We never thickened with cereal, so I'm not sure on that one.

By the way while we are on this topic, someone had mentioned something to me one time about using Gaviscon in their baby's bottle to help with the reflux and thicken the formula. Anyone EVER heard of this???

We used gaviscon for Jaxon and now we use it for Savannah... We don't put it in the bottle just give it.. Not sure if it works the same being in the bottle.. We were told by the GI to give it after the bottle.. It worked wonders for Jaxon and it works for Savannah..

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, never used it to thicken the formula..

Courtney, we have gaviscon infant in Australia I don't know if it is the same. It is a powder sachet and if you add it too the bottle it thickens it. I think it also has some kind of antacid as well. It was impossible to feed to Parker and I soon gave up trying (Express, make it and try feed it was too hard)

Your friends ignorance makes me mad, her child is only going to get worse and if she doesn't try and contol it now she wil have a lot more health issues with him. It's one thing to be uninformed but it is another to be informed and make the wrong choice cause its too hard.

I was talking to my cousin and she is similar and she is trying to ride it out, Lucus is now 13months and to me he is getting worse. I told her what to do, the website, my GI- we will see if she takes the advice.
