Has anyone used periactin as an appetite stimulant. Sarah's GI dr told us to try it to see if it increases her appetite. Periactin is an antihistamine with the side affect of increasing appetite but it can also make then alittle tired. I gave her the first dose tonight so we'll see if it has any affect. It is so strange though during the day she will demand about every 4 hours - she will drink from her bottle and take about 2 oz then stop and start refusing. But she still seems hungry she just won't take any more from the bottle when she is awake. I don't know what causes her to stop even though she still seems hungry. At night she doesn't demand at all- I have to set my alarm to feed her.

We have never used it but I've heard many success stories from others. Matter of fact, I haven't heard of many it didn't help. It also doesn't make them all tired, some kids don't get that side effect. Best of luck with it!

Hi Karie:
A women whose story is in our book used it with great results. It really worked great for her. She said she found it on the internet and "after much insistence, the doctor allowed us to try it." I don't know why she would have to insist?
Best wishes

Hi! Periactin had great results for my nephew. It does tend to lose effectiveness, so sometimes kids are prescribed it in cycles. For example, my nephew only takes it Monday-Friday.
I hope that you see good results!

It seemed to work for us, but we also used it when I decided to start force feeding Daniel. (I was determined he'd make the connection between his hunger and taking food orally.) It did NOT make him tired. It actually made him wakeful!

Karie,
I looked into periactin last year and Evan's ped. refused to try him on it as an appetite stimulant b/c it's only fairly recently that it has been tried for that, b/c there's not proof that it works, and b/c he had just learned about it being used as an appetite stimulant at a conference the week-end before. That's pretty much a quote of what he said, but from what others have said about it since then, I'm not so sure that I believe him. Since Sarah's GI doc. is in favour of trying it, I'd go for it.
