View Full Version : Reflux = DGE?? Confused... please help!!
Macilia 12-02-2005, 07:02 PM I'm a little confused, searching about DGE and comparing with Reflux symptoms, they both said "Spitting up hours after haven eaten" I'm trying to define is my daughter may or may not have DGE, and the more I investigate, the more I get all messed up... If a baby have reflux, he necessarily has DGE??? My daughter spits up 2 or 3 hours after haven eaten and sometimes when she has vomited at night (when she had a cold) you could see parts of the soup that she ate at 12h00 :?
the thing is..... is a reflux and DGE symptom is "Spitting up hours after haven eaten" it means that she has reflux and DGE????
thanx for your help!!!
Becky in NM 12-02-2005, 08:48 PM I guess I've never seen an exact time for what constitutes DGE, but I think reflux is not necessarily spitting up hours later. I'd say, yes, if you're identifying parts of a meal many hours afterwards, that's probably DGE. But a spit up two hours after a bottle may be just reflux.
Daniel would puke three or four ounces of puree as we got ready for the next meal three hours later. I took a photo of his bib filled to the brim, and our ped said it was definitely delayed emptying.
Leigh 12-02-2005, 10:12 PM When Iain had his milk test done we were told that a "normal" stomach is emptied by 50 to 70 % within one hour and completely empty after 2 hours. If your child is throwing up food considered easy to digest more than 2 hours after ingestion, then DGE is a consideration. The heavier the food to digest the longer it is in the system. Also, bear in mind that motility or the rate at which food travels through the system is much slower when they are ill with a gastro virus so vomiting foods up hours after ingestion is normal in that case, not when they are "healthy".
Hope that helps.
karie 12-03-2005, 01:05 AM My daughter had the gastric emptying scan and she only emptied 37% at 90minutes. She would have vomits hours after eating and the milk didn't look digested at all. She is now at 52% emptying with reglan and eryhtro. I am so scared to start solids because I am worried this will slow her emptying even more. They are also going to do another test where they measure the muscle contractions of her stomach - it's like an EKG of the stomach to see if it contracts properly. Has anyone else had this done?
Karie- mom to Sarah SGA, GERD, DGE
I need to figure out how to get a picture of her on my posts. I live seeing all the pictures
Leigh 12-03-2005, 11:30 AM Iain was at 24 % after the first hour, then at the two hour mark he was 45%. Not great, but many others are worse than that.
I am not familiar with the test you are mentioning. Did they give it a name of sorts? If so, we will ask around as there are so many different experiences here on IRD.
Solids really should be started. My youngest was food averted big time so I do not suggest a delay in feeding skills at all. You start with small amounts and keep an eye on her. Post any questions at all that you may have with it, ok? Slow and steady makes the grade!
You should pm Becky or Michele as they are the ones to help with posting pictures. Try posting under the "technical help" portion of the board or click on pm when you see a post by them. They can have you set up in no time! Plus, we would love to see a pic of you and your daughter. :D
AlexysandAaronsMom 12-03-2005, 11:40 AM I understand how it can be confusing....Our GI actually thinks Alexys reflux is mostly because of her DGE. She is 12% emptied after 2 hrs...which according to the GI makes it severe. She will throw up food in the morning that she ate the night before. If after 2 hrs your little one is still throwing up food from earlier, I would say theres some DGE involved.
ElisMom 12-04-2005, 07:07 PM Amy,
This was Eli too, Eww, gross puke, eh? He emptied almost 20% after 2 hours, but after surgery you can see it all moving along nicely,
CourtneyM 12-05-2005, 09:59 AM Aidan has had that done to see whether his stomach contracts properly and his doesn't. His stomach is also closed too tightly and doesn't open enough.
