Help! My 19 month old daughter has not been eating more than 3 tablespoons of solids per day for the past month and a half! She is only on Pediasure and has been drinking about 24 ounces a day of that. That is my only saving grace right now.

She was put back on her Zantac a month ago after being off of it for 5 months. They thought her reflux had stopped, but it just turned into silent reflux. She ended up being hospitalized because of severe diarrhea. As it turns out, her reflux was just burning her up for those 5 months and she had diarrhea the whole time. Now, she is almost diarrhea free after getting back on Zantac. I feel so guilty.

She is 20lbs at 19 months. The GI says not to force the solids until we go back on the 15th to meet with the Nutritionist. She did have a feeding aversion at 5 1/2 months when her esophagus started bleeding out of her mouth while I was feeding her lunch. She went to one session of feeding therapy and was basically cured. I have my fingers crossed for the 15th.

Anyone have similiar problems? She was eating so good for a while...

I am sorry to hear that! I am glad you got her figured out and back on meds though, hopefully she will just start getting better from here. Our son had alot of problems with diarrhea and was eaten alive without PPIs, he is off meds now and seems to be doing well though, hopefully, reading this is making me have second thoughts  Glad you got her back on some meds for help, how long has she been on meds? Long enough to se a diff in food intake?

Sorry, hope I didn't scare you. She has been back on meds for about 3 weeks now. Actually, her eating has gotten worse/stayed the same. yesterday she only ate 1 teaspoon of solids (beef stew of all things!). I'm thinking of asking the dr to give her either a larger dose of Zantac or switch her to something else as the Zantac doesn't seem to be doing it for her. It hs helped a little, but she is still having restless sleep and waking up in the middle of the night arching and crying. Zantac used to be her wonder drug.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who's baby has had acid reflux diarrhea. I was starting to question that when I kept reading about constipation. In fact, they tested my dd for parasites, rotavirus, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and food allergies in the hospital because they couldn't figure it out. Then, they released her after 5 days and said they didn't know what was causing the diarrhea. I switched GIs and she knew almost instantly. I felt so bad that I was letting her little body hurt all that time. It's so hard being a mom to a GERDling!

Jennifer, I would say that if you are still seeing signs of reflux like arching, then a larger dose or different med may be in order. But getting her to eat again just might take a little longer because she's too smart -- she's learned to associate the pain with eating. Hopefully your nutritionist will have some good ideas. We work with a feeding spec who's a nutritionist as well as an ST that works with feeding issues.

I hope you get Vanessa back on track very soon!
