View Full Version : How long for a suppository to work?

Ok, I have tried only once before to do this to Curran and I am surprised children's services were not called due to the absolute screeching that ensued. He managed to push the suppository out within 15 minutes the last time. This time I have followed him around now for nearly one hour and I am literally "watching his butt" and it IS in there. So, it says that it works in 20-30 minutes. Uh, well? **tapping foot** It has been an HOUR. It says ONE suppository and that is what I gave him. Any ideas on when the poop might actually show itself?

His breath REEKS of poop. He is miserable for the last nearly 3 days, his stomach is distended, he is looking icky. He has been taking lactulose again and I even snuck in some mineral oil. Plus about 8 ounces of prune juice the last 2 days. His reflux is worse and he is gagging again.

He has not pooped since last Friday when we had blowouts due to his croup illness.

I hate poop. Or more to the point, the lack of poop.

We use the Fleet suppositories, and they're supposed to work in an hour, but we've had it take a few hours and even not work at all. I hate not pooping, too!

Allright, one little mushy and smelly, sticky, icky, yucky, sandy, poop. I am sure that he has way much more to do as two tablespoons of poop could not make him this miserable (I hope!) Also, the suppository was hardly melted. Is that normal? It says it does not have to be fully melted to work, but what if it was 80 % there still? He also had corn in his poop and I really can not remember when we last had that.

Hopefully we will have a blowout tonight, but we are at the GI tomorrow anyway.

Ohhhh Constipation Poop talk, I love it :)
My youngest Shanea, is a former preemie born @ 32weeks. She is THE QUEEN of stool holding. I am talking the foul breathe, the huge stomach, oh and the foul attitiude to go along with it :) (she's 4 almost 5) I am still waiting for the darn kid to outgrow this. She holds anywhere from 5-10 days, she actually used to go even longer than that. I have had every test known to man ran on her but, we have yet to find too much explaination of why she does it. The biggest problem with her holding besides her behavior and the stench is the size of the bm once she does go,,,,,all I can say is guiness world records size  Seriously, maybe my ped. smokes crack or something because he has never been concerned with it. She lives on Miralax and fleet. He did finally send her for the barium enema thing, didn't even phase her by the way she was like whatever just laying there with her little bum up in the air :) She literally is always full of &$@! :) The size of the bms make her bleed like crazy but like I say my ped is like whatever she's just a "poop princess" I sure hope she outgrows it soon, I can't afford to keep paying the plumber every couple weeks when she decides to poop they are freakin huge  I'm not sure how the child can sit or walk after them. Maybe the ped isn't getting the point of how large they are...maybe I should take a photo ???I am sure they would turn me to the looney bin if I did that.

Ugh--that's all we talk about here...poop and sleep--and not necessarily in that order!

We have to give Bethany 2 suppositories per day, as she does not stool on her own. I have had many, many occasions when the suppository produces no poop. After the morning suppository, regardless of whether I get her to poop or not, I give another in the afternoon. If those two don't produce anything by the next morning, I give a fleet enema. (these are her doctor's instructions).

Even the enemas sometimes take awhile to work--I had one incident in which the enema took 15 hours to produce a particularly hard, large boulder.

Regardless, contact your ped or GI to see how they want you to proceed.

Good luck! This poop stuff is really no fun at all. :(

oh the poopie mommies club...<sigh>
Leigh, I have no experience w/suppositories that are not liquid or enemas for that matter. Actually what is the diff. between an enema and suppository??? I'm curious as I really never thought about it. I also never thought about the breath stinking like poop! ACK!
All I can offer is that you try the babylax fleet liquid gel...it works really fast for Zac and gets a lot out usually. It's a liquid that you suirt up the tushie and w/in and hour they say (a lot less for Zac) it works. I keep him lieing flat undiapered and just wait with his knees back.

I like the idea about taking a picture of our kids poop!!!!! My 2 year old holds his poop and when he finally goes it is huge! I have taken pictures before because my friends did not believe me. we have started talking up the potty training and he got excited about watching his poop get flushed, so he wanted me to empty his diaper in the toilet--but I can't because it does not fit! I have to pinch the diaper to make it smaller so he can flush it!

Let's start a poop contest!!!!!

Back to Leigh's question--if the supp. does not produce in a reasonable amount of time, I fint the fleet enema works a little quicker, but I guess it is a bit more invasive. Hope he finally went for you.

Thanks, ladies.

Katy, you absolutely crack me up! Curran did indeed go. Unfortunately, his guts decided to liquify and explode at school the next day right up his back and down his socks. Big YUCK! I posted a vent about this under updates as that was the day he went to my favourite GI in the world, the former mineral oil king who is now pushing lactulose.

He told me that the suppository and enemas that have not yeilded results indicate that the blockage is too far up to be helped by either, so do not give a suppository nor enema again (ok, that part at least I liked! ). He wants me to give enough lactulose to induce diahrrea and keep it going for 2 weeks. That should be no problem at all, except for the fact that I think it is cruel and that the school is already freaking all over me about the blowout and that he wears pullups.

He said to give him 6 months and this will be corrected. Should I mention now that was what he said to me 16 months ago when we first met him?! For the details on my lovely visit, here is my post link.

Sara, the suppository releases something to start a peristalsis of sorts for the intestines via a med, I think, whereas the enema does it by fluid alone, I think. Oh, do not quote me. Now, I will have to go and look it up! Thanks, Sara! :P
