Just wondering...I know we've probably had topics like this before but...
I want some ideas for finger foods for Zac. He does grapes (peeled and cut), gerber puffs, cheerios, cookies, cut up pears. Keep in mind he can't do banana, apples, rice...anything that will contribute to constipation. I am going to start egg yolks...he does not like yogurt. What about shredded cheese? I just offered him some and DH said it wasn't a good idea. I don't know WHY it woudln't be. He says because of the salt. <shrug> He is really in picking things up and feeding himself now so I'm looking for more versitile ideas. I guess watermelon would be good too, right? I just don't want to keep giving him cookies and I'm sure there's more nutritional stuff he can have. He seemed to like the cheese.

Cheese is an awesome finger food! Good source of fat and calcium. Sounds like your DH and mine are opposites (DH would give N pepperoni pizza every day if I would let him  ). Watermelon is also really good.

Also
-tofu (if soy isn't an issue)
-mango
-Gerber chicken and turkey sticks
-diced peaches and pears
-Gerber vegetable crackers
-cantelope
-cooked carrots
-sweet potato french fries (baked in oven)
-raisens
-dried cranberries
-wheat chex

Go Zac!!! I can't believe he is so big already!

Shredded cheese is a MESS to be avoided at all costs, lol! Catherine will eat a few bits of cheese I've cut into miniscule squares. I bought an 8oz block of Colby and cut off a few 1/8-1/4" squares. She can pick those up and feed herself (and drop them to the cat, her partner in crime). The total amount she'll eat at one sitting is a piece that's maybe 1"x1"x1/4" before I cut it up. And a good bit of that will be slipped to the cat.

LOL! Know what you mean, but I bet he can do it! True, Nathan would cough or gag a few times with new foods - not turn blue choke or anything. I guess it never really bothered me when he gagged on a piece of cereal or a piece of raisen, because I knew that it was WAY too small to obstruct his airway, and he was just learning to deal with new textures and tastes.

Do I sound like a horrible mom???   I just re-read my post, and it sounds REALLY bad, like I don't care if my kid chokes.

Cady's been eating shredded sharp cheddar for about 2 months. She loves it. It's a great food! I don't mind the mess if it gets her feeding herself. She doesn't like chunks of cheese, but eats the shredded, so I go with it.

here is a list of suggested finger foods...and starting finger foods is recommended starting at about 7-8 months. (including cheese as long as dairy isnt a problem)

There are a couple recipes there too

When is cheese okay to offer?
Here in Canada, it's generally around 10 months, when finger foods are started.

They say it's okay for cheese from 9 months here. I give the boys shredded cheese, crackers, plain biscuits, cheerios, carrot sticks, chopped up fruits, bread with spread on it, pieces of cooked chicken, pieces of cooked veges that have been cut up(can be served warm or cold)....... and I can't remember what else....
Also, about the raisins, our Plnuket nurse told us they no longer recommned raisins, and not because of the choking issue. It is because the Dental Health Association say that the raisins can get cuaght in the gums (esp. if they are teething) and cause very bad tooth decay! They don't even recommend them when they are older.. unless it's something that is offerd before the child brushes their teeth! Apparently the sugar content is quite high!

Good to know (as I toss out the raisins)...
