I have had several people say that their child or children with DGE or GERD have had speech problems. My son has been slow in speaking actual words. He babbles plenty but not words. How do I know what is age-appropriate? what should I look for? How many of you have had children with speech problems and how did you handle early intervention????

Many of our kids have speech problems. We actually have a section for it down below in our threads. So, keep a look out for it. I will try to move this over there so you can get some answers to your questions :)

Our son had the fundo and correction for DGE at 2 1/2, he didnt' speak up until then, he felt to crappy! But, since his surgery and recovery his speech has taken off. When kids are sick they don't have the time to learn and advance the way normal kids do. The others have good advice on what to look for. And, many of our kids have speech problems.

WTG, Erin!

Speech problems are common with many kids, Courtney. How old is Aidan? Also, the public health office in your area should have a check list of what the average child does in every area of development at what age. My 3 1/2 yo. is finally coming out with some words. He was too sick for the first 2 plus years of his life to do much development.

Aidan says Da Da. That is really all he says. OCCASIONALLY he comes off with Ma ma but that is occasional. He is a year old. Is that age-appropriate or should he be saying more? Sometimes I just feel other babies are saying a lot more than he is. What do you think?

I would say that I wouldn't worry about it yet, that kids take off at different times and he is really to young to worry.

I wouldn't worry too much about it right now, either. My nephew didn't say anything but "dada" until he was about 15 months. He's six now and quite the talker. All kids develop at different rates. I don't think Aidan is behind yet.

Take a look at the sticky posted at the top of this forum as it has an assessment to look at for young children. He sounds just fine with those two words, but look to the understanding portion and to the sounds as well.

I will post another sticky soon on the milestones for speech.

Ditto. Every child develops at a different rate, and he's certainly within the norm.
