hi everyone. my son is 9 months and i told his pedi about some problems he was having. from the time he could turn his head when he would drink his bottle he would look around in a circle like he is paranoid not just curious of everything during the whole feeding. he is really fussy and is a screamer too. he prefers to be alone cause i guess he get's overstimulated by sounds in the living room when he plays with his 2 year old sister if she is making a sound with her toy he screams and nothing helps except putting him in his crib/playpen in another room by himself. he cant go in stores he screams some of the time with nothing that consoles him if you take him in bathroom and toilet flushes he screams so bad. in church if music is playing he will scream until it stops. he goes to take a bite of food off his spoon and turns his head to whatever is making noise quicker then u can snap your finger and he doesnt take the bite of food. he is scared of the water running in the tub he screams real bad. he hates to be changed after a bath he goes balistic. he was given zantac but that hasnt helped him so his pedi is having him see a neurologist and this thurs he goes to see gastroenterologist. i am not sure what to expect so if anyone can help. i already have a 2 year old with delays and we are helping her she is doing so much better and with him screaming so much plus he is strong-willed on top of everything it isn't easy. :( anyway i am glad to have found this board :)

Hi Nicki, and welcome to the boards. Your son sounds like my middle son. I am still investigating this for Curran, but it sure does sound like sensory intergration problems. Curran still screams and runs when the vaccuum is turned on, the blender, any loud noise at all has him nearly in tears and running. He genuinely can not take it, yet he himself is so loud. We had so many of the issues you describe and it makes more sense to me having read "The Out of Sync Child" and I am reading a second book now on it.
To address some of your concerns in respect to what I found with Curran:
The paranoia is likely due to his being overly sensitive to the noise around him. In time a lot of it will dull down, but sometimes having some background noise (tv on low, radio on low, soft music, white noise) will help to get him used to some noise and blot out other noises that bother him.
Curran was and IS a screamer to this day. He is overly sensitive to pain it seems, screaming like his leg has been ripped off when someone brushes up against him. I thought he was a drama king, but really it is a sensory issue for him.
Curran is a sensory seeker, often "bumping" into things, touching, feeling, constantly moving. Yet, when he was little, the segregation of being in a playpen or an enclosed spot used to calm him. I am trying to give him big hugs now instead of tiny ones and that is so much better for him.
The sound of running water was a big issue for Curran until he was nearly 3 years old. We solved that by running the bath while he was in the crib or playpen and then bringing him to the tub. While in the tub, we would "drip" the tap a bit, then stream it, then eventually he was fine with it full tilt, but it took a long time before he was not jumping at the sounds.
Strong minded sums up Curran very well. We have plenty of issues with him, screaming is one of them.
Can you describe any other behaviours that you feel are odd or out of place? For instance, Curran is scared to death of heights. I mean even as a young toddler he would scream if he was placed up on my DHs shoulders, yet my other two LOVE riding that way. To this day he is the same about that, preferring a "hug" carry. He would scream at the peds office on the table and it was because he was afraid of being up on it, not that he was afraid of the ped! He freaks yet when getting his hair cut and literally is a half second away from hyperventilating if he hears a blow dryer or sees clippers coming his way. He slept on his floor for the longest time telling me that his bed was moving. These are just a few examples. I know that Curran is much older than your son, but we did notice a huge difference even when he was that young.
I will check in tomorrow after work, ok?

Hi Nicki and welcome! My first thought was sensory issues, too. You may wish to read some of the threads that we've already started in this forum. Along with The Out of Sync Child, I'd highly recommend the check list on this site.
