View Full Version : When to call doctor...

My two year old has a history of chronic constipation and has been on and off Miralax. Lately, though, she has been pretty good. A couple of weeks ago, she began having blood in her stools. Were sent to the ER where they did a rectal exam and abdominal ultrasound. Her doc suspects a Meckel's diverticulum and she is supposed to go for a Meckel scan this week. Now she hasn't pooped since Saturday morning. I started giving her Miralax again yesterday hoping it would make her go. I upped it to a full cap this morning, and still nothing. It's never been like this before. I spoke to the NP at her GI's office who suggested MOM or 1/2 tab of Ex-Lax. I haven't done that because it just didn't feel right. Afterall, isn't Miralax a laxative? Why add a laxative on top of a laxative? Anyhow, at what point would you call again? I just feel like between both my kids, I am always calling there and driving them nuts. I feel the need to be selective about calling

Thanks!
Kelly

Hi kelly,
Honestly, I think they are so used to it as all of us mom's have wondered at one point or another if we're "calling too much". However, its their JOB! If you feel the need to call, I would call. My ped said to me the other day (when I had to call her on THanksgiving) she said "don't worry about it, this is my job." If you're mommy gut feels the urge to call...call. You'll feel so much better afterwards.

i would try the milk of magnesia...sometimes that will work for us when NOTHING else will, and it is stimulant free so it will not hurt her.

I would try the milk of mag too. And if you are uncomfortable--call the doctor back. I had Sam at the ped yesterday just for a quick physical so he can get his MRI next weeks and we were back today with a 103 fever! I do not even have to sign in--they know us as soon as we walk in and it is a very large practice!

If it has been a long time between poops and she is uncomfortable I would be agressive about getting it out--it will just get worse.

Awesome! We get so excited here when our kids poop!

I really do not know for sure as I am not familar with miralax, but it could be that the GI is trying to "change the ph" of the intestines with other laxatives. I say this as my middle son was just changed from 11 months on mineral oil to lactulose and that was his explanation for doing it (never mind that it really did not help  ). Unless they are suggesting this as a one time blowout thing.

As far as calling the doctor goes, do it. They are not doing this for free and lack of poop is a quality of life issue when your kidlet is writhing around in pain.

What is involved with the Meckel scan? Be sure to mark it on the calendar so that we can get an update, ok? Scary stuff when blood is in the stool. Was it black and tarry? Red? Trace amounts? It is great that they are doing a scan so soon after the discovery of blood. Maybe your calls have them on their toes!

Thanks for all your thoughts!

Her Meckel scan will be tomorrow morning. My understanding is that she will be injected with a radioisotope and then scanned. This should show whether or not gastric cells are located anywhere other than her stomach.

Hoping this provides us with some answers!

Children's is great. We were told we could get the results Thursday afternoon, but we haven't been able to get a hold of our ped gi. Thanks for reminding me about "Updates." I forgot it was there
