View Full Version : I think its DGE....now what?
lisaann 11-28-2005, 11:02 AM Hi all! I posted on here the other day about my son who has NEVER liked to eat. We sleep feed most of the time. I'm pushing to get a referral to a GI, but in the meantime, we're doing whatever we can to get a bottle into him. Here's my question......I have always suspected that Noah has slow stomach emptying. This morning after he got up, he burped and it was one of those really wet ones like he was going to vomit. He had not eaten in over 8 hours. There shouldnt be any food left in his stomach, right? He also spit up the other day 5 hours after eating 1 tbls of sweet potatos and it came back up. So if this is really one of the reasons for his lack of interest in food, what can be done to correct it? I've read about Reglan, and I'm afraid to give him that. Are there any other safer, yet effective meds out there. And what about herbs? Has anyone tried any? Is this a problem that kids will outgrow? Or is it permenant? I want to be armed with info when I go into the GI's office.
Nathan'sMommy 11-28-2005, 11:12 AM Hi! I think you are right on about suspecting DGE. That is great that you are going in to the GI. If they suspect DGE, they might do an emptying scan, or they might just medicate with motility meds. There are other options out there besides Reglan. My kiddo had side effects with Reglan, but erythromycin helped him a lot, at least for the few months that he was on it. Good luck with the appt!
ElisMom 11-28-2005, 12:03 PM Hello,
We used bethanechol and erthromyicin together to treat our son... I am not sure about growing out of it, I don't think they do. Our sons was corrected with surgery eventually......
Some kids can outgrow it, as their GI system matures. Others don't. Aside from meds and surgery there really isn't a whole that can be done. Did you read the article on DGE here?
Sorry, can't remember, how old is your son? There are lots of holistic type things that are supposed to help improve digestion, probiotics, enzymes, fiber for example and if you wanted to try going that route I suggest you find a really well schooled professional to guide you, and speak to your pediatrician first. We never really had much, if any, luck with that stuff but it might be worth a try if you don't want to go the route of conventional medications.
Janette 11-29-2005, 09:15 AM Evan takes a combo. of Losec and Domperidone to help the GERD and the DGE. There have been no side effects, and the meds. are now working most of the time.
Leigh 11-30-2005, 12:28 AM I can not help you as I am not well enough versed with DGE as the other ladies are, but I am moving you to our new forum for DGE issues. :D
Janette 11-30-2005, 09:22 AM Just a thought, Leigh, but maybe the new forum should have the DGE in the title written in full for those who are not familiar with the term...especially new people coming to the board. I think the spelling is gastro-eosophageal reflux. Can anyone confirm that? (I would have posted this in the mods. section, but with dial up, it would take me ages to get back there. :D )
ElisMom 11-30-2005, 11:24 AM I think most people know it as delayed gastric emptying or DGE.

I tend to disagree. When ever I say DGE, people who are new to the boards have absolutely no idea what it stands for. I think we all think that everyone knows what it means, b/c we've either been reading about it around the boards, or b/c we've been living with it for so long.
ElisMom 11-30-2005, 01:27 PM that is what I meant, I dont think most think of gastroparesis. They think of delayed gastric emptying.
Leigh 11-30-2005, 05:42 PM You are absolutely right, both of you! :D I shall whip on over tonight after making the kids clean and change it to delayed gastric emptying. First time I heard DGE I wondered, too. Our technician called it gastroparesis, the ped and allergist said it the long way.
Anything else you wish to order up for the forum? :D
ElisMom 11-30-2005, 05:46 PM No, that will be all for now, Leigh,
