View Full Version : second question of the :-)
meg12 11-08-2005, 11:58 AM I know this is taboo, trust me I know....but is anyone letting their young infant sleep on the stomach? I let DS do so for naps in our living room Pack n Play and he does soooo well. I know stomach sleeping is better for refluxing, so just wondering if anyone out there gave it a try?
He is 3.5 months and 15#5oz.
Thanks and I understand if no one wants to reply.
Please no flames!
*looks around to make sure no one is watching*
Shhh, don't tell anyone, but my ped. told me to do this when my dd was younger. I let her take naps in her co-sleeper (I was always in the room on the computer with an eye on her!) on her tummy beginning around the same age (3 or 4 months). This was before she was dx'd with GERD; however, she had bad gas and colic and this really helped her.
***I must tell you that even though she slept next to me in a co-sleeper at night, I NEVER put her on her tummy at night!! Only during her daily naps when I was awake and in the room. ***
I hope this continues to work for you!
Janette 11-08-2005, 02:11 PM Brandon was totally healthy and switched to his tummy on his own around 3 or 4 months. I remember going in to switch him back to his back out of fear of SIDS. Evan was a totally different story. Because of his disability, he didn't have enough head control that I felt he'd be safe on his tummy until much later. The back is always safest, but having said that, you have to do what you feel is best for your child.
meg12 11-08-2005, 03:28 PM yes, I should add that I rarely leave the living room when he naps. I sit in my chair and surf the net and post on the boards...If I leave it is for a potty break. I don't even nap as - exhausted as I am!
I don't know that I have the nerve to do it at night. I barely sleep as it is, I can only imagine the stress of that added onto the current level of stress.
But when I sit here and listen to him sleep so soundly during his naps versus when he is at night grunting, sighing, shifting around, and at times arching his back it really is tempting to let him get some well deserved rest. Poor guy.
AAAHHH I am going insane.
Noah's Mom 11-08-2005, 04:58 PM Noah recently just rolled over and fell asleep on his stomach on his own, which he had never EVER done before. I tried it out supervised for a few days, and he slept GREAT, so I posted (of course) and found out about the Angel Care monitor, that monitors your little one's breathing while they sleep. This has been the best $100 I've ever spent. I wish I had it from the beginning, even when he was on his back since I've always been super paranoid!
LaurensMommy 11-09-2005, 07:53 AM Once Lauren began rolling over both ways (around 6 mos.), she would no longer sleep on her back.
To this day, every time I put her down for a nap or for bed, she immediately rolls over and sleeps on her tummy with her bum up in the air (just as I did as a kid :D ). She sleeps very soundly for the most part... she's a very active sleeper though. In the mornings, she's usually upside down in her crib.
Minnie 11-09-2005, 08:24 AM Eric's breathing improved so much when he belly slept that I went for it, even at night.
I struggled with this decision for the first 4 months of his life. I wanted to do what was right, what was best for him. SIDS scared me a lot. I remember thinking of how guilty I would feel if something happened and it was because I put him on his belly. OH, the nightmares!
First I just let him belly sleep during the day, but then...
He would choke and stop breathing several times a night while on his back. I actually felt safer when he was on his belly. He never stopped breathing while sleeping on his belly. He would in seats, swings, and everything else I tried.
Every baby is so different and a Mom knows best if the risks out way the benefits.
Now he sleeps on his belly with a safe T sleep keeping him in place, and has been since around 6 months old. So we're talking MAJOR belly sleeping.
But he's over a year old now and can move all over the place in his safe T sleep. Side to side. He can even sit up on his knees in the thing. He can get out of it too, but he choses not to. I think he really likes it actually
meg12 11-09-2005, 12:48 PM every one has such cute kids -
Could you post a picture of him in the safe T sleep thingy if you have one?
I looked it up on line and can't imagine my little guy in it.
Thanks
Meg

sarahh 11-09-2005, 07:15 PM Well, at 1 day old, my son Matthew was on his stomach in the incubator in the NICU!!!!!!!!!!!! They said he settled better that way!! So there you go!!! :o
Anyway, they were definitely on thier backs when they came home, but just recently they sleep on their stomachs for every sleep- once they start rolling you can't stop them! ALso, we have the Angelcare sound & movement monitors so I do not worry- the alarm will sound if either of them stop breathing and it gives me TOTAL peace of mind.
And Meg.. both my boys have safeTsleeps... but they're not much good now as they have learnt how to undo the velcro!! D'OH!!
Noah's Mom 11-09-2005, 07:52 PM I'm so proud of myself. I finally figured out how to do the pix on my own! Here's Noah in his. He loved it for a few weeks, but then within like two days, he decided that he wanted to be on his stomach and wiggle aroud! He won't have it now.
I'd be willing to sell it... Haven't had a chance to put it on the classifieds yet...

LaurensMommy 11-09-2005, 08:15 PM Cute little Noah!!! Can you let me in on how to make the pics smaller? Mine are always so huge.
EmmasMommy 11-09-2005, 08:39 PM He is sooooooooooooo cute! :D
Noah's Mom 11-09-2005, 09:56 PM Sandy-- I've been using photobucket.com after, I believe, Janette recommended it. After uploading, click "edit" and then I resize to 25%. Then click "resize". Photobucket has been the easiest for me. I couldn't get anything else to work. (Thanks Janette!) My pictures were always really big, too. I still email enormous ones. My family complains, but hey, at least they get pictures!
scarlet 11-10-2005, 05:48 AM At ten weeks I started sleeping Parker on his tummy. At 12 weeks the Ped scared me to death with SIDS stories when I told her about the tummy sleeping- so it was back to his back- and no sleep.
As soon as he started to roll, he went straight to his tummy- I believe refluxers will do this for the comfort. BUT and this comes to the scariest thing that has ever happened to me. I have an Angelcare moniter and it went off, first time ever and I ran in there and he was flat on his face, we were able to wake him and I will never know may happened. But in follow up, this is how we were able to determine his sleep apnea.
So my advice if you are determined to sleep him on his tummy get a moniter, otherwise he will soon be able to roll decide if he wants his tummy or not
LaurensMommy 11-10-2005, 07:34 AM thanks Maggie... i use Photobucket too. Now, I'll have to resize them. I guess I wasn't paying attention to what could be done. Thanks!

Glad to hear it's working so well for you, Maggie! If you ever figure out how to e-mail smaller pictures, I'd love to know the secret. The large ones take forever to go through.
meg12 11-10-2005, 11:16 AM Thanks for posting the picture of Noah in his safe t sleep. I guess it isn't as much of an incline as I picture and the velcro wrap in reality isn't as snug as the picture.
He does look quite comfortable.
And adorable!!
Meg
