View Full Version : Picture of the nest?
meg12 11-08-2005, 11:56 AM I am going to have to start introducing our 3.5 m old son to the crib soon. Right now he is in a car seat in the crib. I was wondering if someone could post a picture of their 'nest'? I am not really getting how it is to be done.
Thanks
Meg
Noah's Mom 11-08-2005, 12:23 PM I'm really picture happy, as I just figured out how to post them. I'll put one on here when Noah settles down for another nap!!! Also, I just figured out how to make it work even better, so I'm proud of my new design!
Noah's Mom 11-08-2005, 12:38 PM To keep him from rolling sideways, I rolled up two small blankets and put rubber bands on them to keep them nice and tight. Mine are about 1.5 feet apart, but this depends on how much room your litte one takes up.
At the foot of the crib, I folded a pillow "hamburger" style to keep Noah from sliding down to the bottom.
Until last night, I just layed the pillow at the foot of the crib flat, but Noah could wiggle over it and end up smashed into the bottom of the crib. Now that I folded it (duh), its too tall for him to get over. At least for now!
Noah's Mom 11-08-2005, 01:18 PM Here's the picture... Try and ignore the Tylenol stain!

EmmasMommy 11-08-2005, 08:36 PM Emma's looked just like Noah's, but I put the towels and pillow under the crib sheet so it stays put. I'll have to dig up a picture of Emma's. I took the nest out b/c she's so mobile it just made her mad that she couldn't roll around.
You could try that, Maggie, it might help Noah from going over it....
Noah's Mom 11-08-2005, 09:07 PM Amanda--I pulled up the crib sheet to take the picture. Mine is underneath, also!
Does she roll sideways since you've taken it out?

Oh my goodness...I"m so embarassed...........I'm so sorry.
She's always slept on her side....but, yes. She rolls back and forth and back and forth.......I think it helps her get sleepy. :D
Oh, and I forgot to reply to one of your other posts....I can't find it now.
(It was about Milk of Magnesia and the monstrous dose needed to get things moving)
The GI upped her dose to 1 tsp twice a day, and the mudslide has begun! Now, she's back down to 1/2 tsp twice a day for maintainance..... Sounds like I'm talking about a car!
Thanks for asking, though! :D
meg12 11-09-2005, 11:30 AM Thanks guys, I think I got it.
I have tried it with out the towels on the side and he just rolls all over. Even with a sleep positioner. SO I gave that up after one night. I was gone by 1 am and he was back in his car seat. That was a very long time ago.
Maybe this will be better.
Thanks
Noah's Mom 11-09-2005, 03:49 PM I have looked at those positioners in stores, and I do not feel they are bulky enough for the job. You can't really tell, but my blankets are about 10 inches tall rolled up and I keep them out wider, not right next to him. This way, he has a little wiggle room before he rolls over them. I've spent over a month mastering that sucker, so I'm hoping it works for us for a while.
Noah's Mom 11-09-2005, 03:51 PM Oh yeah...
Amanda-- Glad Emma's clearing out! Poor girl. Too bad she can't take Zelnorm!!!

ZacsMom 11-10-2005, 08:03 PM Amanda...I kindof liked your little "architectural" layout you made to show a sample of how your "nest" was made. This was months ago but you used a little blue line, a green line, and a red line...was so funnY, and cleaver!! LoL
ANyhow Zac uses wedges on each side (although hes' starting to roll right over those since I use to have towels on each side of each wedge between the crib and wedge. I also keep a big pillow at the foot of the bed so he doesn't slide down, his feet hit it first like a bumper. Anyhow I'mnot sure what to do now that he's rolling over teh wedges. I tried one night with only one wedge behind his back on his favored side...he ended up sideways at the foot of the bed horizontal w/the pillow. :?
Samuels mom 11-10-2005, 09:02 PM Thank you for the picutre. I have been trying to figure out how to make Sam keep his legs out of the rails. I thought about getting a bumper, but I don't know if it will work to keep him out of the rails. The other problem we have is that his crib is elevated and he slides down to the bottom and his feet stick out the end - that is if he stays upright. I'll get home from work and he will be upside-down - head downhill- in the crib. I am sure that helps the reflux
I think I will try the nest idea to see if it works to keep him uphill.
Amanda - glad to hear that Emma is doing better with the bowels :) At least she is staying more regular now!

Yes...I am the smartie-pants, aren't I?
We had to lower Em's elevation...she just isn't comfortable with it so high anymore, she ends up upside down, like Sam....her's is only about 5-6 inches elevated now. It used to be 12....yikes.
Emma rolls so much, she'd get p*ssed at any wedges.....she's wild, though!
Caden's Mom 11-11-2005, 09:33 PM What worked for me was tieing a bedsheet aross the crib. I folded the sheet several times to make a 6-12 inch pocket. I tied each side of the sheet to a slat in the crib. Then I cut two holes in the sheet for his legs to go through. I can elevate the crib pretty high and he doesn't go anywhere. I had to get creative because he always ended up at the bottom of the bed. He can't rool over when in it, and he is starting to want to do that, so I don't know how much longer it will last. But it has been great.

Sounds like a great Idea!~ :thumbrig: :sign7:
Noah's Mom 11-12-2005, 10:48 AM Caden's Mom--
Where were you when I bought that safe-t-sleep!!??!?! That's a brilliant idea! I would try it now, but Noah HAS to have room to roll around. I just built our nest up nice and high so that he cannot roll over it, although he still occasionally does. But, you have a great idea! You could patent that one!
Samuel's Mom--
I was tempted to use our bumper for the same reason, but my ped says absolutely no bumpers as they have caused deaths in infants. I guess babies can get their heads caught in between them and the crib? :?
ZacsMom 11-12-2005, 12:26 PM I tell ya, whoever acn come up with a contraption that keeps them from sliding, and allows them to roll everywhich way...will be a millionaire! Doesn't sound very "doable". :?

Amanda, Mary, and I can put our nerdy husbands to work...
Samuels mom 11-12-2005, 11:26 PM Sam has never had any bumper pads in his crip due the risk of them - I didn't want to get them, however, everyone in my DH's family thought that I was crazy not to have them in. Like duh - he isn't moving so he isn't going to get hurt on the rails, but now that he is mobile - they say no to them. It all makes sense to me and I don't have them in.
Also - I tried the "nest" tonight and he already has gone over them and is laying sideways in there with his feet straight out the side and his head almost on the other towel. How he got over the towel I don't know
What to do now. He is still sideways in the crib and will probably be upside down by morning. How does he do it??
Noah's Mom 11-13-2005, 09:06 AM Sarah--
I don't know if this will help, but Noah did the same thing until I recently modified our situation. I made the nest really tall. The blankets are about a foot tall now, and the pillow is folded so its the same. Until Noah begins to crawl, I really don't think he can make it over this thing. It really actually looks like a big bird nest now.
***I've got a "nerd" around here, too. Geographer... He comes in handy with things like this, though!
ConnorsMommy 11-17-2005, 11:07 PM Thanks for the picture of the nest! I was making it wrong! I has a rolled up towel at the bottom of it.(No wonder why Connor was rolling right over it!) Now that I put a pillow at the bottom he no longer slips down and gets wedged at the bottom of his crib!!! He's been sleeping much better and so have I! Thank again, Connor's Mommy(Kim)
