Has anyone tried a chiropractor for their reflux babies? I had a friend that used one for her baby's colic months ago and he has been a different baby. At the visit, she saw pics of GERD babies that had been treated there. This is a local chiro that has been in practice for years, so I have investigated a little. He claims that he has never had a child that didn't alteast improve after getting "adjusted". He recently had a GERD baby that he saw just 3 times and that baby is doing great and has been off of Zantac for a while. Being a nurse, I never really thought about that aspect of treatment for Gracie. But I'm willing to try it.

Any experience in this department with any of your babes???

i don't know anyone who's done it, but it couldn't hurt (as long as he's used to working on babies) & it might help. i say go for it & let us know how it works.

I haven't done it w/ Evan, but we did go w/ AJ for his ears. It didn't make difference for that, but he loved to go (we started at 7 mos). My friend here sees a DR who specializes in kinestetics? and it's helping to pinpoint her allergies and she said she does think she's improving (she's so bad she can't even tolerate Neocate).

I just started seeing my Chiro for MY back and asked about my dd... she said she would be willing to do it and that they do not adjust FOR reflux... rather they adjust so that your body is able to help the reflux and fix it's problems...

thats what she said anyway... she has been adjusting her son since birth and she has done other babies... I'm going to talk to her to see if she wants to write something up for this site about it or if she knows anyone who has. It might be nice to have the Chrio option info available here. :)

Here's my opinion on the matter. Note that its just an opinion. People go to chiropractors all the time and have relief, but they never go just once and get the job done. If its so beneficial, why is the problem never fixed? Why do you have to keep going back? When I asked my ped only out of curiosity why and how chiros are treating reflux, she made a great point. The majority of reflux is going to improve over time. So, as time goes on, the baby is going to get better regardless of the treatments in most cases.

My stepfather went in for a treatment after a parachuting accident, and the chiro snapped his neck and caused a major stroke. Fortunately, he recovered fully, but I think this goes to show that someone that is NOT a medical doctor should not be popping around on anyone's neck/back (especially an infant).

I had extensive back surgery several years ago that was performed by one of the top two spine surgeons in Illinois, and he gave me a LONG lecture about how chiropractics might feel good but are in no way a cure.

I know many are going to disagree with this, but I just wanted to share my experiences.

Maggie...

I just wanted to say that I was very skeptical about going to see the Chiro myself... I had gone many times with my mom when I was little and watched them "crack" and "adjust" her back... Mine doesnt do that... and maybe they dont do all that crack stuff like they used to.

Yesterday she simply put "blocks" under my hips in certain spots for about 2 mins and had realigned my pelvis. My legs were 1 1/2 inches off because of it. She doesnt do any cracking even when she does my back... I only have 2 herniated disks so I'm hoping she can relieve some of the pressure from it and I can fix my numb spots in my feet.

Chiropractic work is weird... and she told me I should be "better" in 8 visits... its not a life long commitment I have to make, even though I agree that people usually go forever and feel better for a couple days and then need to go back... I guess we'll see how things go. I just wanted to mention that I noticed a change in the work that was done many years ago as compare to what is being done for me.

I like hearing everyone's opinion about this. I worked for a group of family physicians before I had Gracie and they were all pretty much against referring anyone to a chiro. Of course, some people would say that they didn't support this because it may take their business away. They weren't like that though and they really believed that, in the long run, they were hurting people more than helping after all those adjustments and neck "cracking", etc.

I am not against chiro practices, but I just don't know about him messing with my kid??

Kelly--I think that's a good concern. My theory is that if the chiros did hold the secret to miraculous GERD relief, our doctors would be sending us there. I don't think the doctors are concerned w/ losing business, either. I think they are just aware that one has a medical degree while the other does not!

I have been going to the chiro for many years because of my severe scoliosis - it helps me be active and be able to move most weeks - my other choices are drugs or risky surgery - so my experience has been good - but not all chiros are the same just like you don't feel comfortable with all drs. I take MJ weekly because she had some torticollis like symptoms - and she is all better - yeah - but we still go to help with her reflux - it's not a cure but if it even helps her feel a litlle more comfy - it's worth it! I know my chiro well - a family friend so that is important too when choosing one - references, references, references!

good luck! Tara

What an interesting question. I have heard of people taking colicky babies to the chiro. ALso, some recommend CST (Cranio-sacral therapy)- movements of the skull bones. Suppsedly that is very good for helping babies with a myriad of differnt problems, but you really have to find someone who KNOWS what they are doing.
Haven't ventured this way myself at all.. the furtherest I have gone "non-medical" is homeopathic drops for teething!!!
