View Full Version : Kiras horrible constipation will NOT improve!
Sarahndipity 10-31-2005, 12:16 PM Kira has been severly constipated for over a month straight now. We (myself and docs) have tried, Mineral oil (Kondremal) Prune Juice, warm water, glycerin suppositories.. NOTHING will help her. I have to MAKE her go once a week, otherwise, who KNOWS when wshe would ever go.. By making her, I push her legs back, give her supps, to stimulate it, and just make it come out. The thing is.. it's TOO big, dray and hard to come out! Her little hole is wide open, a little bit of blood, while this humungous poo is too big and she will grunt and push but its just too big and hard to come out :( I cannot believe that its still happening, prob been like 6 weeks now!
Anyway.. they tried Reglan on her, didn't help. She is 100% tube fed, but gets 1/2 breastmilk and 1/2 Carnartion Good Start Supreme Soy w/ AHA & ARA.
Anyhoo.. if anyone has any other suggestions other than what we have tried, Kira & I would be very appreciative! I will also go back and browse the posts looking for more info...
Thanks!
Sarahndipity 10-31-2005, 12:24 PM Sorry, she is also on other meds...
Keppra (anti-siezure)
Klonopin (anti-siezure)
Pyrdidoxyl 5 Phosphate (B6)
Folinic acid
Zantac
and starting yesterday... B12
My poor baby.. I have NO idea out of all the crap that goes in her, which one won't allow her crap to come back out!
Sarahndipity 10-31-2005, 12:34 PM Hmmm, why can't I ever post just one message, without afterthoughts constantly hitting me??!
I wanted to add that Kira is almost 4 months old. I also remmeber hearing that somehow getting the fundo or G-tube can make constipation worse??
sarahh 10-31-2005, 12:50 PM Oh Sarah... (((HUGS))) to you and Kira. I have to admit that it sounds like you're doing everything you can....
I'm not very clued up about the tube feeding thing but I do know that for Matthew the combination of meds and choice of formula had an extreme impact on his constipation in the early days. We went through 3 types of formula before getting the right one....
We had the bleeding too and it is truly horrible. Is there any other type of feed they can give her via the tube or do you have to stick with the one you are using?? Maybe it would be worth trying something different (if you haven't already).
What does the GI say about the constipation?
Oh hon... this just sounds awful for poor wee Kira... and for you too. SOrry that I have no wise words of wisdom... hoping someone else may come along with other suggestions. It may also be worthwhile asking your question on the tube feeding board as well.
CadysMommy 11-01-2005, 11:54 AM Have you tried any other formulas? Maybe a hypallergenic one might help? Or, in our case, the Good Start with DHA/ARA made Cady constipated, while the stuff w/o the DHA/ARA didn't. You could try that, too? That's all the suggestions I have. There are few other moms here who are dealing with severe constipation issues. Hopefully, someone will have some better suggestions. You're doing all you can...just keep that in mind.
Leigh 11-02-2005, 10:37 PM Ouch! I have severe constipation issues with my middle son and have been battling them for over 2 years now.
I am not familiar with all her meds, so I will take the time tomorrow night to peek at them and get back to you.
What I will ask is how much mineral oil were you giving? Have you tried an enema? It can REALLY clean them out, no matter how impacted. Sometimes using a "pediatric fleet enema" will clear them out and you can then have success with the mineral oil. Did your ped reccommend the mineral oil?
For the bleeding and tears I would suggest epsom salts in a nice warm bath. It does help them to heal and it increases the blood flow to the rectal area. Some kids actually poop in the tub as they get so relaxed. Do you use a creme for her rectum? Try something really thick to help protect and be sure to give it a good smear right around the butt hole. It also really helps.
I will see what I can come up with.
ZacsMom 11-28-2005, 07:57 AM Hi Sarah,
How's the constipation going now? So sorry this is so late, but we battle constipation here, too. We find great success with the "fleet' babylax glycerine/gel suppositories. They work within minutes and really clears him out. Usually, after that he can get the rest out on his own for a couple days then we're back to square one.
So is she any better?
Oh, poor Kira and poor mommy!!
I don't know much about tube feeding or all the meds she's on; however, my dd has horrible constipation and will go days without stooling...even when given Enulose, prunes, MOM and gylcerine suppositories--you name it, it doesn't work for her. I, too, have had to hold the legs back and watch her strain to push out large, compacted stools that cause tearing/bleeding.
The only thing that we've had work for us are the Fleet infant enemas. Even then, it can take up to 15 hours to work for her and it is still painful for her to stool; however, at least she is able to stool when given one of these.
I would ask your doctor if this might also work for you.
{{{BIG HUGS}}} to you both!!!
Sam's Mom 11-28-2005, 09:33 PM Sorry to hear about the constipation. We have had issues with it as well. Swiitching formula helped a lot. Sam is on Alimentium--his stools are not hard with the alimentium. Sometimes he still needs a supp. to stimulate him but it is much better now.
Maybe you need to try the supp/enema more frequently before it gets so backed up. Maybe every other day until she starts going on her own.
Good Luck.
Becky in NM 11-28-2005, 09:40 PM We just switched from Enulose to Miralax (actually, the generic version), and D seems to be pooping easily -- and it has not yet turned into diarrhea. Yahoo!
KaitlynsMom 11-28-2005, 09:50 PM Maybe Mary (Bethanysmom) might have some advice about the enemas since Bathany gets them so much... poor kids!!! I HATE being constipated!!!!
*edited* HAHAHA oops I just noticed Mary responded!! lol Shut me up!
