Hello. I have a 9 week old daughter who has been on .3 ml 3x's day Zantac since October 1st..with great success! I have been reading different topics here and must admit I am really overwhelmed! My question is regarding my daughters bowel movements....since she has been born she has made one only once a day. I was always suprised to read she should be going 3-4 times per day. I am breastfeeding..and now that she is 9 weeks old..she goes about every two days. Is this more characteristic of a baby with reflux or is it typical for some babies in general? Thanks

Hi there...
B'fed babies do in generally go more often than a formula fed baby and at that age going several times a day is usual. I know that my son got constipated early on in the piece due to the meds.. we had to try and manage that by giving increased water volumes and adding prune juice to 1 feed a day. I would definitely discuss this with your Pedi. as she may need something to help her along. Is the poop hard when it comes out or is all soft? Does she strain to get it out? I have to admit that alot or reflux babies have issues with constipation....

Actually, it might be normal for YOUR breastfed baby to go only once a day. In fact, per my lactation consultant many moons ago, some BF babies may only go once a week. When Cady was BF, she'd go every other day with no discomfort, so if your baby is not uncomfortable, I wouldn't worry about it. It may be perfectly normal for her.

THere is a wide range of normal as the others have mentioned, but I would wonder more how the stools being produced look. Are they hard? soft? Runny? Do they look like a BF baby stool? If there is not a big belly, gas, and discomfort issues (provided the intake is good), then it could very well be normal for your child. It would not hurt to look at the meds, though. COnstipation is rampant for sure amongst GERDlings.
