View Full Version : Help!
Chicago8 10-30-2005, 12:24 PM Hello. I have a 9 week old daughter who has been on .3 ml 3x's day Zantac since October 1st..with great success! I have been reading different topics here and must admit I am really overwhelmed! I feel better and worse reading that my daughter is like som eof your kiddos. She does sleep well at night but horrible during the day. Some days she has two 20 minute naps-ALL DAY! Today she is napping so far for 3 1/2 hours? The problem is...she needs to fall aseep in a bouncer or swing. She seems to sleep in both places far better than her bed(port-a-crib next to my bed). ARe there any suggestions about when and how I can help her fall asleep with less help and get her into her bed more? I have inclined her mattress but she still fusses in the bed. I feel like starting a nighttime routine is a joke as everyday is so different with her. Also...she loves to be held and can olnly sit alone for 15 minutes at a time. Is this characteristic of kids with reflux? ANy thjoughts are greatly appreciated!
Noah's Mom 10-30-2005, 01:14 PM At that age, we allowed Noah to sleep where ever he would sleep. He slept in his carseat or bouncy seat in the crib from about 3 months until 4.5 months. I used to recommend this, until he was too big to sleep in those and we had to get him to sleep in his inclined crib. That was a NIGHTMARE. I wish I would have mastered that in the beginning. He also napped in my arms, as I was too afraid to put him down since he didn't sleep well. He didn't nap during the days, and just now started at 6 months. Up until very recently, he might have napped 30 minutes total all day.
Noah wants to be held all the time, also, but at that age, he wasn't as bad. He loved his swing around that age, or he would even just lay in his crib or packnplay and hang out. Now, he either has to be held by me or be able to see me at ALL TIMES. Have you tried a carrier? I wear Noah for a good portion of the day.
sarahh 10-30-2005, 02:46 PM I think at 9 weeks ther is no routine.. their feeds are all over the place.. the sleeping can be erratic. I tried really hard to have a schedule with my twins as that was the only way you can survive with 2 babies of the same age. By around 4 months we had a great routine going, although it changed regularly as their needs changed.
At 9 weeks old we were sleeping in carseats as that was the only place they would go. SO we swaddled therm, put them in the carseat, and put the carseat in the cot!! Looked pretty funny but it worked, and I'm a firm believer that if it works do it!!!
They do so that the bouncy chair or swing is not a good way to get baby off to sleep as they don't enter a deep sleep unless they have that movement or rocking motion. Not what you wanting to be doing at 6 months of age if you can help it.
I was able to wean my boys out of using their carseats by removing them from the carseat once they had entered a deep sleep.. that way they woke up in the cot. I alos did alot of shooshing and patting of backs and butts!! It was extremely tiring and tedious with the 2 of them but worth it in the long run as we have not had any issues of them going to sleep since they were about 5 months old.
Stephen was always quite difficult to get to sleep during the day and we were always patting his butt!!!! They slept out in the lounge for their day naps for a very long time... on sheepskins on the floor. This was purely because they screamed blue murder if they were in the cots during the day!! I then eventually weaned them into their cots for day naps at an older age (around 5-6 months).
Hang in there- do what works best for you and remember, you can always change the habit.. it just takes some work!!!
CadysMommy 10-30-2005, 03:10 PM There really isn't much routine to 9-week-old baby. I think at that age, Cady would sleep in one of three places, depending on how she'd been doing that day. Her bassinet, carseat, and bouncer chair. She'd sleep great at night in her bassinet or carseat, but the carseat or bouncer chair for her miniscule naps. At about 5 months old, was when we saw a definite change in her naptime routine, as well as a shift to using the crib for naps and bedtime. Give it time. A routine should develop soon, but at your baby's age, what she's doing is actually pretty normal.
Noah's Mom 10-30-2005, 05:04 PM I totally agree about the routine being impossible at this age, especially w/a GERDling. Noah's 6 months, and we still don't have a routine, since his eating is so unpredictable and really, that's what our days revolve around. We've always just tried to be very flexible and do what we had to make the best of things.
Summer2 11-02-2005, 06:46 AM We are in the same boat as you right now with our 3 1/2 month old. At about 2 1/2 months, we finally got him in the crib, but the only place he will nap is in the swing or a moving car and believe me, those naps are few and far between. Also, we have to rock him to sleep before we even think about putting him in the crib. I'm not to worried about it at this point. My first son, who was reflux free, was the same. At about five months, we used the cry it out method with him, and that solved our problems getting him to bed and also helped him learn to soothe himself to sleep during the day. I'm crossing my fingers that will work for us this time too. With the reflux, I agree that you need to be a little more flexible about where they sleep and when! At this point, we are so glad when he sleeps at all, it could be hanging upside down in his room like a bat and we wouldn't care!!!! :D
ConnorsMommy 11-19-2005, 10:27 PM I agree with the others. I drove myself crazy trying to get Connor on a schedule at that age. It was impossible because feeding and sleeping was so inconsistant. I just finally got him on somewhat of a schedule at almost 4 months which I actually read is a good time to start a schedule because babies sleeping and eating rythems are usually established at this point. Connor use to cry a lot during the day and want to be held (He still wants to be held a lot but has gotten much better) try buying a front pack it has been a lifesaver for me. I use the Baby Bjorn expensive but worth the money! Connor would never ride in it facing my chest he only wanted to face outward. Also maybe you can place the bouncy seat in the crib when she sleeps so she gets use to her crib. Just do whatever works at this point it will get easier as she gets older!
ZacsMom 11-20-2005, 07:23 PM Sorry I missed this...how is the sleeping going now? I just wanted to say that mine would ONLY nap in his swing for his first 4 months of life and it drove me nuts. I was very consistent in putting him in his crib everytime he fell asleep or looked very close to it. He didn't sleep long (if at all) at first but as time passed he just got use to it and now he loves his bed. Hope it's going better for you!
