Hello. I have a 9 week old daughter who has been on .3 ml 3x's day Zantac since October 1st..with great success! I have been reading different topics here and must admit I am really overwhelmed! I am concerned about all of the posts regarding speech and language problems as well as feeding issues, and sensory-processing disorder. I am a speech pathologist and am nervous about what is in store for my daughter! I can understand some of the hyper active gag reflex and feeding issues...but what are the exact speech and langauge issues? Have there been studies done on this? Thanks for your time.

I am not sure if there has been any study on this topic. I do have some first hand experience though because my boys have and have had speech delays. My sons also had many ear infections when they were babies so what we were told is that the delays were caused by this. My one son also has an auditory processing disorder which has made it even worse. I wouldnt worry about this to much tough because there are alot of kids out there that have no problems with their speech or eating. Try not to stress yourself out over this until there is a problem that arises. When things are out of our control I know that it is hard not worrying but remember there is always help out there.

Hi Chicago8, I wouldn't not worry since she is only 9 weeks. I would wait till she is at least 9month to the year to see hwat sounds she is making. My son who was diagnosed with Austism had mild Ger which he outgrown when he was 6 months. He had no feeding problems but he can't not talk except maybe 5 -10 words that he can repeat. He has speech delays and I was told that it had nothing to do with reflux. Again my daughter, who I think may have some mild speech delay(having her screened at the end of the month) had feeding problem, aspirates on thin liquidsas well as she was severly tongue tied then 9 months old, plus she had ear infections all the time and just had tubes put in. She now is starting to babble up a storm, just no words. So I think that it may just vary on degree of GErd and what specilaist says what.

I agree with what Shannon said. :D Emma just had tubes placed in her ears because she's had 6 ear infections in 7 months. The ENT decided to place tubes so early b/c he didn't want her to have speech issues. She got her tubes in place on Oct. 12th, and in just the past few weeks she has started to babble and now says mama, dada, nana, geegee(kitty), and baba. Before that she just make grunting sounds and squealed.

With your background, I would just watch your daughter for signs of early language delays and work closely with your pediatrician. :D

Also, watch out for ear infections!

I agree with what the others said about not worrying, especially since your dd is still so young. Since your daughter was diagnosed with reflux at such a young age, and since the Zantac is working so well, you probably don't have anything to worry about.

Hi,
I am new here. My son had pyloric stenosis at 5 1/2 weeks old. He is speech delayed and was a late walker (21mos). He will be 2 this Feb. I have been searching and searching for a message board where I belong.
I see that reflux and speech delay are somehow related according to this board. Can someone please fill me in. I have a feeling my sons delays are due to the anesthesia he was under. He has not refluxed since.
Any ideas? Thanks!

natalie: I think you needed to post in this section under a new thread- then more people will be able to see your post-especially the ones who can help more.
This quick reply box is for the topic written for the first persons question- who incidentally is a speech therapist and she may be able to help you the most. I personally don't think anasthesia could deay his speech, has he had many ear infections? this type of stuff affects hearing- but I am sure someone else probably has a lot more experience.

Chicago. 8- I really wouldn't worry yet, plenty of our kids have no problems with their speech and as someone trained in the area it is hard not to worry. Parker is now 16 months and diagnosed at 6 weeks and his speech is developing normally.r
