Noah's not being feeling well, and this morning, his poop was BLACK. Really wierd.

The only new medication we've been using is Motrin, but this is day three on that.

Hmmmm. Maybe the motrin. Is it slimey or gushy? Black stools on their own are usually not a problem, but if they are black and tarry, then that can indicate blood in the stool and requires immediate examination.

I will go hunt up Motrin and see if black stools are normal with it.

Uh, stop the motrin. I will be right back with some links.

All of the above reccommend that you stop the medication and call the doctor as it could indicate blood in the stool. It could be damaging his stomach. If he is not drinking well then he is not lining his stomach properly before taking this med, so it makes sense. Do you have a ped to call? Keep a diaper.

Noah had Motrin last at 6 am, and I won't give him the next dose. The only warning that I was kind of concerned about was the sore throat. I have no reason to think his throat hurts, but how would I know? He is taking more ounces so far, but its been VERY difficult giving it to him.

Thanks for being so helpful. I'm anxious to see what you've found. I'm typing a paper on the computer, so I'll get it right away.

Let me know that you got the info. All sites for the motrin say that black or black and tarry stools are an issue.

How is it going? Is Noah ok? Any more black stools?

Not to downplay what Leigh said, but black stool can also just be from an upset stomach, especially since you said that Noah isn't feeling well. Nonetheless, I'd wait to see if things improve off of the Motrin.

Well, we just returned from the ER. Noah's fine. I called his doctor and she said that we better take him in for a rectal exam just in case. After waiting 2 hours, he had the exam and every thing was fine.

The ER doctor came to the conclusion that I was poisoning Noah all weekend. I've been giving him Motrin, per his ped, for his fever since Friday night. I guess this is a big no-no for refluxers. He said the medicine will just attach to the stomach and irritate the heck out of him. This explains the terrible reflux symptoms that started Sat. morning!

He thinks that Noah is teething and/or had a little bug. I feel much better now that I know whats going on.

I'm glad the little guy is okay. I had no clue that Motrin makes reflux worse though. Pepto Bismol is another thing that just irritate the stomach rather than helping.

Janette, I agree under normal circumstances as I posted originally that a black stool is not a biggie, but a black and tarry one is. Since I knew Noah has been quite fussy and unhappy this weekend I looked up Motrin in case and found that a black stool alone is enough to worry about.

I am so glad that you went to the ER. Must have been a pain to go and wait, but I am so glad you did! We will have to make a note of the motrin issue for GERDlings. I saw some meds that it does not mix with, such as naproxen. Sorry to hear he has been "poisoned", but your Mommy instincts were right on! :D

**I was really worried. Thanks for giving the update and I am glad that all worked out** :D

Matthew has black poop at times.. I put it down to the solids he's eating. ANd then it can be bron or even yellow. I don't know, it's hard to interpret baby's poop sometimes!!! (What a conversation)!!!!
Hoping Noah is feeling better and it was good to get peace of mind from the ER and the tests they did.
