View Full Version : What a NIGHTMARE!

Well...we've had a terrible, horrible nightmare tonight. Zac was on day 3 of grunting and straining and getting NOTHING out...nothing. We were doing little balls at a time before. 3 days of nothing and then tonight he started crying while trying to poop. I called ped immediately and she said I could give him a glycerin suppository. I went and took him into the bedroom on changing table and he had a poop STUCK in his little butthole. I lifted up his legs and tried to spread his little cheeks a bit and he started crying. It was HORRIBLE but I had to help him, it started coming out more while he was crying...he managed to get about 2-3 inches of "dog loaf" out. After that I put the glycerine in and within seconds, out came another LOAF about ...5 inches long, no kidding. He cried of course...then after that he managed to still get 3 or so little loafs out. I'm hoping he is cleared up in there for now. She said to continue to give him 1 tsp of karo syrup for each ounce of water throughout the week. I'm really really hoping I never have to go through that again! MY POOR POOR BABY!

p.s. on a bit of a comical level...after the biggest of loaves, I had him spread apart, saw he was trying some more, so "mommy" goes and puts her face down there...and I kid you not...he SHOT out a ball of poop and I missed getting hit in the eyeball by inches! It landed about 12 inches from the diaper!! Never seen such a thing! There was more after that but I learned to stay clear from the dumping zone! :?

OMGoodness Sara! You poor thing, and poor Zac! I have NEVER heard of a baby having that much poop in them...bless his little heart! :(

I hope that this constipation is over. That was a nightmare! :(

I wonder if this is why Zac has been so quiet lately....maybe he hasn't been feeling well. :( Let us know if his mood changes tomorrow, b/c he's finally gotten that poop out.

I was wondering the same thing today, amanda. I was thinking, maybe he's not happy because he's CONSTIPATED! That gets painful. He's been for a while, but like I said, at least he was getting "something" out little by little each day. This was just horrific to witness! All I could do was just put my hand over his tummy and help him brace his legs and coach him on!! I could not believe the size of those loaves i'm telling you! Hard hard hard, also. I HOPE he got it all out. Thank the lord for that glycerin suppository. I had no clue it would work that fast! I've never used them. THe ped told me he should poop w/in one minute. I'll tell you what, it was fast. OH my POOR :angel13:

Hopefully he's cleared up and in better sorts tomorrow. He was just so pathetic lieing there lookin at me w/those big blue puppy dog eyes. He was exHAUSTED also, so he was half falling asleep while trying to poop. Man what a nightmare! I lathered up his little butthole w/some balmex before bed though, cause that's gotta hurt after all that!

You're such a good mom, Sarah! :D

I have to ask...what have you been giving him to get it to all come out like that? I want to know b/c I'm going to do the same for Emma...

Also, what kind of suppository did you use...and how much of it?

Sorry for the stupid questions.. ...but I am SICK of Emma having to deal with this. I'm ready to be over with this, and it looks like whatever you've been doing works!

Well, we were up at 4am w/more poop! And more again just now. This last batch was a bit softer, finally. He still whined while getting it out, I think his little butt is just sore.

Anyhow, Amanda...I've been giving prunes prunes prunes whenever he gets fruit i give prunes when he's constipated anyway. ALso, LOTS OF WATER, but with the teething he kinda just wants to chew at the nipple instead of drink. At least he does that w/the bottle and not my boob! SO FAR.
However, ped just suggested one teaspoon of karo syrup for each ounce of water for one week. We're going to do that AND the main thing that got this all out was the suppository. It's called "babylax" and it's GLYCERINE. It's important for some reason that if you use a suppository thati 's only glycerine. I have to ask my friend where she got it because she gave it to me. I'll let you know for sure, I need to stock up on some myself!
OH YES..and no bananas, apples, or rice. Unfortunately the ped said those can tend to make stools harder and that's NOT what we need. Zac has never tasted bananas or apples yet...poor guy. :? He's been pretty much constipated since we started solids.

Poor Zac...but it sounds like it's all coming out. We're doing the prunes, water, and I started giving her Enulose, (her constipation med), yesterday. Our baby suppositories, Fleet is the brand, don't even melt in her! She just pushes them right back out an hour or two later...unmelted! :? Her's are all glycerin, but there are several "inactive" ingredients...water, disodium, stearic acid, and sodium hydroxide. Maybe that's why they're not working. I'm going to find some of those babylax if it's the only thing I do today!

Emma is slowly working her's out, but the problem is the longer it takes to get all this out, the "new" poop in her intestines is drying out and will be hard to pass too! It's like a vicious cycle!

We've also not touched apples, rice, or bananas...except for my MIL gave her bananas two weeks ago....I was out shopping and DH was watching her and he let her feed her a jar of bananas! They came in a fruit multi-pack I got on sale. I wasn't going to ever give her the bananas.....but I was keeping them in case she ever got the runs.....ha ha, like THAT will ever happen.

I hope Zac is feeling better!

I'm going to do the Karo + water as well, the Enulose, prunes...she already has had 2 stage 2 jars in the last 3 days!, and I'm going to have the Babylax suppositories on hand when needed! I want this out of her now...and I want to get all of it.

Sara...is this it?

Is it a liquid?

YES, amanda. I was just about to tell you that I don't have to worry about anything "melting" it's already a liquid that you just squirt up there. It worked almost immediately. You just have to kindof hold his little cheeks together for a min so it doesn't spill out...?? I noticed on that site it says ages two and up but ped todl me it was okay so I just go w/that. I just emailed her to see if i can use on reg. basis when trouble arises. I'll see what she said. I'm off to get some more when he wakes up anyhow, as I only had one froma friend.

Thank you, Sara! :D

We were told by our ped to use 1/4 of a children's suppository. Those darn things would NOT melt. The other day, Emma woke up from her 1 1/2 hour nap and it was halfway stuck in her....uh...hole. I can't believe she could sleep with that in there!

Did you squirt the whole amount in there?

Sorry for so many questions....

ZacsMom
10-10-2005, 02:36 PM
NO problem! I di ask the ped what to do and i said "so I just 'squirt' the liquid up there then?" she said yes to just warm it up in your hands first a bit because it may be "dry"? whateve rthat means and squirt it up there. Now that I think about it I wonder what she meant by that, this is liquid so how could it be dry? Anyhow I specifically told her it was babylax glycerine and she said it was fine. I did quirt it all up there, there was some left at first so after his first initial "doodoo" i squirted the rest. His little butt has little cracks now from the opening...just lathering it w/vaseline. He pooped 3 times so far today! It was actually mushy and not loaves.

Poor little guy....but that's great he's back to the mushy poops...he must be relieved!:D

I just wanted to say that the "babylax" does work wonders. I used it five years ago for Kaylin. She would sometimes go two weeks between poops. Poor little thing, so about once every two-three weeks we'd have to use the "babylax" and she felt so much better. I'm sorry you guys are going through this. Constipation sucks!

I just asked at the pharmacy for baby glycerin suppositories and they gave me some - they cost around 3.25? Not sure what is in them, but them seem to melt in my fingers if I am not fast enough getting them into him. I will have to see about this babylax.

Glad Zac is doing better. I hope he is much happier now!

we are on poop number 5 for today!!!!! Amazing. So that's a total of 7 poops so far in 24 hours after the babylax!!!!! I am happy to say that the last 4 or 5 have been SOFT!!! <big sigh of relief> I don't think he's pooped this many times in one day since the begining breastfed newborn poopy days. Actually, he HAS gone that many times recently...but each and everytime he would get out something the size of a pencil eraser or quarter...nothing bigger and very hard. Anyhow we are happy campers today! We've also been more "chipper" today and he's starting to make some baby noises again! Thank goodness. This child was really backed up! We're talking about 7 inches of long loaves followed by another load in middle of night of hard stuff, followed by 5 mushed, healthy looking mounds! LOL sorry i'm rambling now, just happy!

We have been using baby lax as well. It works great--and fast , so watch out!!!!!

If they have hard stools and trouble getting them out, giving prune juice might make them very crampy and uncomfortable. I find that using the baby lax to clear them out first and then use the juice to keep the stools soft and give them the urge to go--and not to hold the stools in. The Karo syrup will do the same.--By the way, are you using dark or light karo syrup--Do you think it makes a difference????

ZacsMom
10-10-2005, 07:18 PM
I am using light karo syrup, as specifically directed by ped. ALSO, I'm going to copy and paste her response to my email here for those who are also wondering about the suppository use and how frequent...

"Dear Mrs. Gomez:

That's Great!

Use the glycerin suppository only if he has been more than 5 days without poop, and he is uncomfortable, otherwise I would rather treat him by mouth. This week continue giving him the karo syrup, if when you measure the 1 tsp. per oz of water it looks like is the same that you were giving him, increase it to 2tsp.

Victoria Fierro,MD"

Have I mentioned how happy I am with this ped before? LoL...too bad she's not a specialist in GERD or I'd put her on the "good doctors" thread. She is wonderful! I email her with ANY concnerns and she's always happy to respond in a very timely manner! She returns my phone calls w/in hours also! She probly thinks I'm a nut! But she doesn't show it and is absolutely wonderful! She's the only thing I'm going to miss when we move! :?

That's exactly what Emma has been doing...I call it her stains...my DH calls them skids. Ewww.

I'm so happy to hear he's feeling better....yeah, Zac! :D

Oh, Emma had her blowout today....unfortunately I had just put a size 3 diaper on her because I have tons left...she's actually in 4's now...so it oozed out the sides, all over her cutie Gap pants, and all over my arm.

I swear my arm still smells like prune poop, even after I washed it a dozen times and Bath and Body'd it!

But, I don't care....she pooped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Prune poops are really stinky, aren't they?!
SO funny how my topic of conversation lately has been poops, with every mom I talk to! I was just discussing poops today w/a friend who has a boy zac's age. I was discussing how I had poop all over my hands/fingers last night after that ordeal. I didn't even care! Too funny the drastic change in everyday conversations from being childless to parenthood! :lovestor:
DOn't remember the last time my topic of conversation was "what's your favorite movie". :glasses7:  :happy1:
Or...where we going out tonight? :occasion:
Now it's just mostly poops, pukes, silly stuff, and so on!
 :smt119: :pukerigh: :banghead: :binky:

p.s... I think we need to find a "poop" smiley! lol..something tasteful, if that makes sense!

My mom has sent me a smiley before that had a mom and dad holding a baby that poops in it's diaper...I'll have to ask her where she got it.

I can beat that, Amanda! Yesterday morning, Catherine was in her exersaucer. I smelled poop and pulled her out. The poop had worked its way up her back to her SHOULDERS!! Ugh!

Good one Lesley, but I think I can beat it. My sister called me this morning. Her DD (18 mos) woke up at 5 am fussing. My sister ignored it and after a couple minutes she stopped. An hour later, her DS (they are twins) started crying. Eventually my sister went into their room, and she said as soon as she walked in the door, the smell almost knocked her over. Her DD was in her crib, and there was poop EVERYWHERE - over all the blankets, crib bumper, pajamas, sheets, even down to the mattress liner.

SOOOO gross!!!! My poor nephew had to sit in that poop-filled room for over an hour!
