View Full Version : The wind
Janette 10-07-2005, 10:02 AM One of Evan's major sensory issues right now is any air on his head or in his face. He cannot handle driving with the windows open, or having the breeze blow on him on a beautiful autumn day. He also hates hairdryers. Does anyone else have this issue? How are you dealing with it or how have you dealt with it?
EmmasMommy 10-07-2005, 12:04 PM Emma is opposite....she loves it. She laughs when you blow in her face.
But, she is a little oddball. But, we love her anyway! :D
Sam's Mom 10-10-2005, 09:39 PM Now that we a getting out more I am noticing that Sam gets irritated by wind in his face. right now I am just trying to get him out more so he gets use to it. I hope that it is just because he has not been out much.
lucyinaz 10-11-2005, 01:19 PM Oh, poo. I can't remember which of my older guys was like that... one of 'em was....
after I eat lunch, maybe it'll come to me.
Leigh 10-12-2005, 07:15 PM Iain startled more than would be considered normal when wind came on his face. He is seemingly fine now, I think. We just keep his face covered or have him pushed into us when we are out and it is breezy. Hard to do with a bigger critter, isn't it?!
The hairdryer would be an issue here, though. Curran can not stand the sound at all. He still freaks when we vaccuum.
Katerina 10-12-2005, 07:22 PM Kat loves the wind but she hates anything high pitched or loud.
Leigh 10-12-2005, 07:27 PM Curran IS high pitched and loud, yet he hates noises that are loud or high pitched. Weird.

It sure is, especially with the fall and spring winds that we get here in Ontario. And it's impossible to avoid the hair dryer in a cold climate.
KaitlynsMom 10-18-2005, 03:46 PM Janette... what do you mean exactly?? How does it effect him?? What happens? I only ask because Kaitlyn gets bug eyed in the wind and starts holding her breath and stiffening like she would do when she was choking but she obviously isnt choking... I joke and say she thinks she is swimming in the wind because she does this when her neck or anything above get wet too... even when I clean her new ear piercings.... it's weird! hmmmmm
Is this what you mean? How do you know if there is sensory trouble and why would it happen??
Janette 10-21-2005, 10:17 PM Michele,
It's like he's about to go absolutely nuts. He keeps trying to turn away from the wind or the hair dryer, but just can't get away. He whines and cries, and squints...and just keeps trying to get away from it all.
KaitlynsMom 10-22-2005, 07:39 AM She doesnt do that she just does the holding the breath thing. I asked the ped about it the other day and she said dont worry about it. It's just weird and I've just never seen a baby do that lol

I agree with your ped. That's not an uncommon response from an infant.
Vicky 11-16-2005, 12:35 AM Just browsing through past posts and came across this one...
Our little guy Max (he's 17 months now) also hated the wind when he was younger like around 10 months old. He would squeal and seem to have lots of trouble breathing and would gasp for air and drool and gurgle - it was like he was being tortured. He did have airway issues as a young baby so maybe the air pressure was just too much for him. It seemed like he kind of grew out of it.
I noticed it when we first would try to go out in the stroller. This was around Feb/Mar of 2005. We had our OT outfit our stroller with sponge to give Max lots of support so he could sit upright in the stroller. But he just wouldn't tolerate being in the elements. I started off just doing figure eights in our driveway. Then eventually worked up to going down the street one or two houses. Eventually we managed to go around the block - woohoo!! I'm sure our neighbours thought we were crazy. This all took several weeks. And as it progressed the weather warmed up (I live in Vancouver BC). So I think it might have been the cold that he couldn't tolerate. But now he seems okay with it and LOVES the stroller.
So, in short, we just slowly introduced him to the elements and he eventually got used to it I think. . .
Hope this helps...
Vicky
Janette 11-16-2005, 12:38 PM Oh Vicky...I wish it were that easy for us too. Maybe if we lived in a warmer climate it would help. Thanks anyway! We're heading into winter weather today, and he hated it all the more. At 3 1/2 years, I doubt he'll outgrow it any time soon. :(
Vicky 11-16-2005, 11:13 PM Yeah, I know Janette. I figured it wouldn't be so simple for you and every child is different. I know what it's like to see your child in distress over things like the wind. Maybe you should move out west!
I'm sorry for you and your little one. I hope the winter is mild for you this year.
Vicky
Janette 11-17-2005, 08:38 AM A move west or south sure would be nice. The windchill here this morning is -11 C (that's roughly 10 F). It's blowing and starting to snow (only the second bit of snow this fall, so I really shouldn't complain). It's soooo cold that dh took his bike to work today so that we could have the van. Gotta love him! :P I'm hoping for a more mild winter too! I feel that cold a lot more now than when I was a kid or even 20. Brrrrr....
