I know that wretching can be a problem after fundo, but Sam has not had a problem until recently (surgery was in July). It only happens about once a day. He starts with some coughing and then gets dry heaves, usually after a feed. It has not happened much, but I am getting worried that it will become more of an issue. anyone have this problem??? Has it always been an issue or did it gradually increase?? Associated with increased volume of feeds???? Any advice???

Yes, the retching, It is one of the big things about having this surgery. We thought alot about this side affect before hand, its still much better than all the puke! But, hard to watch.
It seems to come in waves we have come to believe, just like the reflux. Once they have a good retch, it takes about 2 weeks possibly for them to get back to not. I think when they retch the area swells and then it is more susceptible and then it just continues. We starve Eli when he gets bad with the retching as to not put pressure on it with foods. WE do a liquid diet for a few days, we just learned this trick and it works.
You need to try to keep it as under control as possible, a good retch will undo the wrap. And, retching will losen the wrap over time. A quick drink helps Eli most of the time to get it all down.
At first I would feed Eli more because it got to the point of him not being able to eat so I would keep trying and he would keep retching. Then, I tried the opposite, nothing thick for a few days and it works wonders *so far*... let me know if it gets worse. I am sure it will get better.
Elis did seem to get much better after being put back PPIs. Once they begin to retch it is scary to watch and seems like it lasts forever.

Thanks for asking. I am feeding him more upright now and it helps some. He still has some episodes, but they are not lasting as long and are less frequent. I think it is related to the volume of his feeds. I have a call in to the GI about concentrating his formula so he will have less volume to deal with.

I have heard alot of parents with G tubes say that venting when the wretching starts helps alot with it because it is usually due to air.

This is definetly one of my huge concerns! Kira does some "siezure like activity" with her face when the reflux comes up and back down.. so I am afraid that the wretching would do the same or even aggrivate that more. WHAT is wretching anyway? Is it dry heaving, as in needing to vomit, but it won't come up and out?

with the fundo it can't come out so it it is like dry heaving but they are actually trying to vomit and it won't go through the wrap. So, they dont stop. It can also damage the surgery if it cannot be controled.
