Gabriella seems to have a poop at every diaper change. When she sneezes she poops when coughs she poops and then she has major exlosions all the time. No diaper can keep in her poop. She is on Prevacid. Does any body else have this problem. I think I get more info. from here than from the doctors themselves.

Hey there,
I definitely think that the Prevacid may have something to do with it. My 14 month old has been on it for several months and she very rarely has solid, formed poops(and she eats like a horse) How old is your little one? Is the Prevacid her only med? Are you breastfeeding? Hope she is doing O.K. otherwise.
Take care,
Kelly

Hi Kelly,
Gabriella is 10 months old and she has been on prevacid since she is 3 months old. She does not eat anything by mouth she is a tube feed baby. Thanks for the info. I know that I can count on the explainations on this site. Here I am thinking that its the strenght of her formula but these doctors can't answer that question. They keep telling me to make the formula at half a strenght and so on. She is on Elecare at 24 cal. per ounce. She just started on Atrovent and pulmicort (inhaled meds.) and Zyrtec. She has lots of issues going on that doctors can't figure out.
Let's just say it hasn't been fun. Your little one is adorable.
Thanks for writing back.

I do not know anything about that formula, but if it broken down proteins like alimentium that may have something to do with the pooping. Sam always had constipation issues, but when he was on alimentium he went a lot more--he would poop when he coughed as well. Mixing the formula to make it higher calories may also have something to do with it--I am not an expert about this, but I remember my GI talking about how your body processes the higher calorie mixture--maybe something to ask a nutritionist.
Sam is tube feed as well and he has more frequent BM's--of course it all stays down now!

Prevacid caused Iain to have liquid green poops. I know that it can cause gastro upset and thus loose stools and/or diahrrea.
I am not familiar with the inhaled meds, either, but give me some time and I can look them up.
Have you had the loose and explosive stools since starting the prevacid? Try to think back to what the trigger could be. Do you keep a log for her intake and poops? Might help as well to see if it is cyclic. The fact that it is explosive is something that should be addressed.

Prevacid caused constipation with Emma. In fact, constipation is listed as the most common side effect of Prevacid. Perhaps it is the formula? But, medicines affect kids differently...
Sorry....I wasn't much help.

Catherine is on Prevacid and has had little rabbit pellet poops since we started really pushing solids a few days ago (a desperate measure to get this child to sleep through the night!). She didn't have that problem when it was just Prevacid and Alimentum and an immaterial amount of solids. Damned if you do, damned if you don't!

Thank you all for responding. Gabriella's poops are some times green and very watery. I just stopped her prevacid for 2 days to see what happens. Already her poops seem less frequent and a bit more chunky. (sorry to be so graphic) The nutritionist wants to water down her formula a bit but I don't know lets see. I haven't kept a log of her stools or intakes. But I want to see how this works with me taking her off of Prevacid.
I will give an update after tomorrow.
Thanks again.
