I have a poop question, but just wanted to add a gross alert, because this will be disgusting...

Nathan has always had really gross poops, whether he has been on regular formula, soy, alimentum, or eating solids. He had a few days a couple months ago where he had semi-formed poops, but otherwise, they are always yucky. Dark green, usually mucousy, goopey, and stinky. (He also has had diarrhea, like 4-5 poops a day, for the last week or so, but I think that is realted to his sickness last week or teething.) For his first few months, I was thinking allergy, but there was no change on hypoallergenic formula. Could this be normal??? Why the dark green if he eats nothing that color? If it is an allergy, I can't imagine how we would go about identifying the allergen, since he eats just about everything we do. If he seems happy and is eating fine, should I just ignore what's in the diaper?

Thanks for putting up with the graphic details...

Okay...I have to admit at first I was worried! I couldn't see Nathan's Snugglepie ticker. All I saw was a box with a red "X". I thought you had posted a picture of the poop!

He he...

Anyway, Emma's poop was always a very dark green on Goodstart...but they were VERY formed and never mucousy. Would your ped want to see it, or have it tested?

No Sheila,

Dark green is not a normal colour for poops. Some formulas and some meds. can cause that colour though. (Good Start comes to mind.) It could also be the sign of an upset stomach, and not just the reflux either. What meds. is he on right now? Have you already asked the doctor about it? Sorry I can't help more.

Amanda - I will spare you the picture!!! LOL!!!

Thanks so much to you and Janette for mentioning that it could be related to Good Start! I just went on the Good Start website, and it says:

Q. I’m using Nestlé GOOD START and my baby’s stool is dark green and runny. Is this normal?

A. When the iron and whey protein in GOOD START is digested, some of the iron colours the stool green or dark green. Products that are casein-predominant will not give a green stool. The green colour is normal because GOOD START is similar to breast milk in composition and may therefore cause looser stools.

Yeah for green poops! I will definitely mention it at the next doc appt, but I guess I won't worry in the meantime.

Thank ladies!!!

Sam had the same things. None of the doctors seemed to be worried about the mucousy-stinky part, although daycare was so I took a dirty diaper with me to the clinic the next day and they didn't say a thing about it. Sam is on Good Start as well, but they were always dark green no matter what we were on, but the stink was gone on the other formulas.

As a co-moderator of this board I have to read all the posts- even the TMI ones!!!!  (well, I did sign up for this forum!!)
Matthew has ALWAYS had green poop- even on breastmilk he had it. It's funny now though because whilst he eat solids, the 1st poo of the day is green and the 2nd one is more yellow/brown with "bits" in it- i.e. the undigested solids!!! LOL I was going to mention about whey and casein dominant formulas because whey dominant formula (which is what we are on) often give green poop. ANother reason for green poop is wind/gas in the bowel. Well, that is what they told me in NICU anyway.

Glad you found your answers, Sheila. I know about the formulas and meds which can cause this to happen. The only thing that I will add is that mucousy stools are not great as they indicate an irritation. I would definately keep a check on that.

Also, does he truly have diarrhea with the 5 poops per day? If the stools are formed at all (even if there is a lot of liquid, but some solids) then it is probably not diarrhea. Teething really does a number on diapers as well. Keep an eye on that, too. Maybe you should log down what he is producing now to see if it changes significantly.

Poop is so very fascinating, eh?

How is he feeling?
