View Full Version : Fundo and sports
MomOfMolly 09-16-2005, 07:07 AM We have an appointment with the surgeon next week and I have a question that I would rather field here first..I have heard (one one time though) That after the surgery contact sports are a no-no. I understand that for the recovery period, but is that forever? Has anyone else ever heard this?
Sam's Mom 09-16-2005, 02:11 PM I have never heard that and do know why they could not participate in sports after recovery--my guy is only 8months old so I never thought to ask that. Let me know what you learn.
ElisMom 09-19-2005, 01:00 PM Yes, our surgeon and GI told us this.... it is true that they dont recommend this, I am sure it would depend on the child though mostly. Every situation is different. I can tell you that our son can't play hard or he has terrible pain in his upper stomach and will actually get sick and retch. Contact sports are a no probably because of the wrap, and I know of an adult who was rejected by the military because of the wrap. It is major sugery that alters the normal anatomy of a person.
MomOfMolly 09-19-2005, 02:36 PM We have known that this was coming for a couple of years, she simply kept outgrowing her doses. The bigger she got, the bigger they got. Now she can't run or jump without having a huge coughing spell or projectiling (depends on how long ago she ate as to the outcome!).
I am "transitioning" her from sports (we have done cheerleading, gymnastics and t-ball, knowing this was on the horizon) to musical theatre. She loves singing, dancing and being in front of acrowd so it hasn't been much of a struggle. :D The other thing in our favor(?) is that she got the tip of her finger cut off in a folding chair over Labor Day and CAN NOT do anything physical (they put it back on, but it was a horrible as it sounds!). So our t-ball season ended before it started and we had just quit gymnastics three days before because of all of the coughing, etc.
I am more trying to prepare myself for what her life will be after the surgery than anything else. She has been SOOOO good through the whole finger ordeal that I have no concerns about how SHE will do. We meet with the surgeon this Thursday and I amn getting nervous.
ElisMom 09-19-2005, 03:07 PM Sheesh! Ouch!! And, my 5 year old just broke his arm right when soccer season started and we had just paid $90 so I can relate! Not to that extreme though!
anyhow, my 3 year old is our refluxer, big time, he has had the surgery and it has been a wonderful difference, we have had problems off and on along the way but it has been amazingly wonderful for him. He was like your daughter, he would vomit when he would play hard before the surgery, now he tries and can't LOL  Atleast, he has no more ear, nose, throat, lung infections, can eat, can hold down his food, his immune system is back up and he is much much healthier. Seriously though, it has been a blessing for us, even if he may never play football... maybe he will, who knows with this kid! He is obviously not the norm as I am sure your reluxer isn't... Nice to meet you!
P.S. dont be suprised if she still needs meds, he is still taking them because of reflux symtoms since the surgery but he is still much happier and healthier with less discomfort most of the time.
Sam's Mom 09-19-2005, 07:50 PM Boy, I never even thought of the sports thing! I have a hard time thinking that far ahead. Right now I would just like to see him sit up and support his head! He has a lot of catching up to do!
ElisMom 09-19-2005, 11:16 PM HeHeHe, I know what you mean, I have an 8 year old and you just dont see things coming when it comes to your babies! You want to think they will be babies forever!
melba19 09-20-2005, 12:18 PM Hi,I have three children that have had fundos and they all have played sports. My oldest also has a feeding tube and has continued to play sports(baseball, football) and has never been told not to. The only sport that he had to give up was karate. My second child has done cheerleading, soccer, softball, and dance. Finally my third child plays baseball and football prestently. I have asked our doc both gi and surgeon if it is okay for them to play sports and we have been told that there was no problem with doing so.
Melanie
ElisMom 09-21-2005, 01:23 PM It must depend on the surgeon and GI as well then. Wow, you guys sound busy Melanie! I thought I was blogged down with the boys playing soccer!
raisingangels 10-10-2005, 12:23 AM We were told NEVER with Noah. Maybe because it was an open fundo ?? I don't know. I do know that Noah does the same thing Eli does and after a few minutes of hard play Noah will be doubled over in pain and start walking hunched over. That's when we know it's time to go home.
ElisMom 10-10-2005, 01:16 PM Yep, same here....
