View Full Version : It's the whole or partally broken down proteins!
sixdogssixcats 09-12-2005, 11:46 AM It has to be! All of these kiddos who are constipated are on some formula other than a hypoallergenic version (accordingly to my unscientific observation). We just migrated Catherine from Alimentum to Enfamil Gentlease over a period of two weeks. Once the mix hit 50/50, her poop started stiffening up. On 100% Gentlease (which is milk-based with partially broken down proteins, like Good Start), she's pooping golf balls. One at a time, and it literally rolls out of her diaper if I'm not careful (TMI, sorry!). I'm going to talk to her GI about it on Thursday, but it looks like the best we can do is a 50/50 Alimentum/Gentlease mix. And honestly, we only switched her from Alimentum after her RAST test showed no milk allergy to save some bucks. I'm starting to think it's not worth it.
lucyinaz 09-12-2005, 05:33 PM Huh! That is really interesting. 50/50 is better than 100%alimentum (easier on the pocketbook), but such a pain!
EmmasMommy 09-12-2005, 09:32 PM I AGREE! Emma is pooping twice a day and she's on 50/50 Alimentum and Goodstart...(we're slowly weaning her). I can't wait until she's on full Alimentum. She may actually want to eat since she won't be full of...uh...crap.
She, in her 6 months of life, has NEVER pooped twice in one day. Even when taking Enulose...a laxative!
She's off the Enulose....Alimentum is our new best friend. :D
Well, our stinky best friend. :tongue6:
Janette 09-12-2005, 09:38 PM LOL Amanda! I guess Evan's the exception to that rule. He's never had constipation problems.
CadysMommy 09-13-2005, 08:09 AM Cady constipates on any other formula than Good Start. I had that problem with Kaylin, too. Good Start has been our savior in that department. I'm sorry that Emma has had such trouble with it. I guess formulas are touch and go. What might work for one baby, probably won't for the next.
AlexysandAaronsMom 09-13-2005, 01:53 PM When we switched from Alimentum to Isomil we noticed a huge change in ALexys stools too. (after she got over the endless diarrhea) She has a lot of "rabbit pellets" now on the soy....every once in awhile I will give her a bottle of ALimentum and it clears her right out so I am sure you are right.
Sam's Mom 09-14-2005, 09:36 AM I have been trying to switch Sam to Good Start, but it seems the more Good Start he gets the more congested he is. So last night I gave him just alimentium to see if the congestion resolves. According to the GI, his biopsies did not show any allergy to milk, but he does not seem to tolerate it now. Before his Nissen and G-tube he was on enfamil--we tried other formulas but they did not seem to make much difference. I am sick of this guessing game!
Minnie 09-14-2005, 10:43 AM Amanda!
Emma's pooping?!!!!!! YEAH!
I really expected to see a poop celebration post from you. Instead I have to butt in on someone else's thread to hear about it. LOL
Sorry, I just had to congratulate Emma. I really have nothing else to add to the conversation.
This whole thing (reflux, constipation, breathing problems, eating difficulties, allergies, etc etc) is such a puzzle isn't it? URGH!
EmmasMommy 09-14-2005, 01:00 PM Amanda!

Funny.. .I was just getting ready to post it in Good Days...
Sorry...
sarahh 09-14-2005, 10:42 PM Can't really comment on teh brands of formulas you guys use (we don't have them here). I will be sooooo pleased when we are able to drink cow's milk... formula is costing me a fortune!!!! Of course, we are on the more expensive variety as that is the only one the boys tolerate. And Amanda.. yaa to Emma's poop- even if it stinks- better coming out than not at all!! Oh, and I love her new avatar... she's really growing up! *sigh* wish they could stay little forever!
Lesley.. sorry that Catherine is doing "golfballs"- how are things now? ANy better or much the same? Poor thing. Not fun at all. I hate those "rabbit" poos!

Catherine still has diarrhea from an antibiotic she's on, but I imagine she'll be back to golf balls in a few more days when this med runs out. Thanks for asking.
