Tucker is having his g-tube/fundo surgery tomorrow morning. Our surgeon said that he will not get his mic-key button for 4-6 weeks post-op. He also said that we are going to learn to "hate" the g-tube initially, but that it gets much better once the mic-key button is placed. In your experience, was the first 4-6 weeks terrible? He told us it will probably leak all kinds of gross stuff, cause skin granulation, etc. What have you guys had to deal with initially? :(
I'm a nervous wreck about the surgery tomorrow, but am just having faith that everything will work out. I'm so thankful I found this site, the support and assistance you provide for us newbies is wonderful.

Daniel got a Genie button five weeks after his G tube placement. At first, I just couldn't figure out what to do with that long tube, but it never seemed to bother him. In fact, he slept most of that first night on his stomach. D did get a slight infection around the site about a week after the surgery, but we just had to use a stronger antibiotic ointment, and it cleared right up. That's also when it leaked the most, but it was never more than wetting the pad and a slight damp spot on his shirt.
We found that D got crusty spots from the tube pulling, so we ended up tucking it in his diaper at night and throwing it over his shoulder during the day. This way, each side of the hole got a bit of a break.
When D got his button, I was concerned that the area was still slightly pink and crusty, but the GI said it was perfect.
I hope everything goes smoothly for Tucker. Will be thinking of you!

I wish you the best of luck. We just had fundo/g-tube surgery 4 weeks ago. I am so glad that we did it. I have a new baby now. He is finally getting the nutrition he needs and feels so much better.
We have not had any problems with the G-tube. I am a nurse so I was comfortable dealing with all the equipment. It may take some getting use to, but once you get a routine it is OK. It sure is easier that cleaning up puke all day! My advice to you is to watch the nurses care for the tube and to ask a lot of questions so you are comfortable before you go home.
good luck, I will be thinking of you today!

I wish you luck and hopet that all went well today. I will tell you I hated the long gtube but it was really not that bad. Once you get used to it dealing with it will be easy. I do hope that next couple of weeks go smoothly and quickly. Once the button is in things do get much easier and I found it easier on my sons also. If you have any problems or questions please feel free to ask any questions.
