View Full Version : Fast/Slow Eater
EmmasMommy 08-16-2005, 11:52 AM Is your refluxer a fast or slow eater? Supposedly a baby is supposed to take 15 minutes to eat.
If Emma's really hungry she can drink 5 ounces in about 5 minutes. Other times she'll drink about 3-4 ounces and it takes her about 10 minutes. Is this comparable to your baby, or is Emma drinking too fast?
She's even on the slow-flow nipple, Playtex. She has such a strong suck!
KaitlynsMom 08-16-2005, 01:23 PM I dont know how to answer... i guess on the good days, Kaitlyn eats pretty fast.. she eats anywhere from 5-15 mins depending on how hungry she is... now on a bad day (which seems like everyday lately, ugh!) She can take up to 1 HOUR to eat an ounce!!!
CadysMommy 08-16-2005, 01:43 PM I guess I'm in the same boat. It really depends. She can sometimes take 4 ozs. in about 2-5 minutes, but at other times it can take her 20 minutes to finish three ounces. It all depends on her mood, I guess.
ZacsMom 08-16-2005, 02:14 PM Zac's done w/in 5 or 10 minutes tops...BFing that is, that takes a stronger suck also. Have no clue how many oz. he's taking in but it has to be from 6-8.
Pooka 08-16-2005, 02:36 PM i think she takes about 1/2 an hour to eat. she eats between 2-3oz at a feeding.
Becky in NM 08-16-2005, 02:52 PM Daniel was so slow! I'd stop after an hour.
Janette 08-16-2005, 09:54 PM Evan took a good hour to eat 1-2 oz. He couldn't suck back 8 oz. at a time until after his second birthday.
I think, Amanda, that since each child is different, a range of 5-15 mins. is probably the norm for a good eater. It has been 6 years since Brandon was little, but that sounds about right.
EmmasMommy 08-16-2005, 10:19 PM Thanks, everyone! Just checking to make sure Emma's not guzzling and contributing to her puking even more. :D
zapsmom 08-18-2005, 06:33 AM Zoee was a guzzler and still is. We have her still on the newborn nipples b/c of the guzzling, she chokes more. I think that is why she hate her sippy cup b/c they are too fast. :?
sixdogssixcats 08-18-2005, 08:09 AM Catherine will suck down a 4oz bottle in 5-10 minutes during the night and take 15-20 minutes of fighting during the day. We still use Avent #2 nipples; they're for 1mo, I think. She chokes on a faster flow.
OwensMom 08-18-2005, 05:14 PM Owen nurses no longer than 8mins at a feeding, since I'm breastfeeding I don't know how many ounces he drinks.
AlexysandAaronsMom 08-18-2005, 05:35 PM ALexys takes forever to eat most of the time....it takes her about 45 min to eat 5-6 oz. But a lot of that has to do with distractions, if she hears a noise outside she has to jump up and look around , etc....and then it takes me forever to get her to settle down and eat again, and sometimes thats it shes done. Her last bottle of the night usually goes down the fastest, about 4 oz in 20min. and the last 10 min she is pretty much asleep already.
Leigh 08-23-2005, 09:08 PM Walker was a guzzler, Curran could drain a bottle in astoundingly record time (then puke) and Iain sort of grazes for the most part. Since Iain is my youngest I cast my vote for slow, but not eccendingly so.

EmmasMommy 08-23-2005, 09:36 PM Thanks for replying, and voting, everyone! :D
We recently switched to Dr. Brown's bottles, and Emma is puking significantly less on them....and burping less afterwards, (sometimes she would burp and burp and burp until the next feed!)
We can only use the level 1 nipple though. Level 2 is way too fast for her and the formula runs out the sides of her mouth. Level 1 seems to be doing pretty good.
She's silent refluxing like crazy, but I just wanted to update on the "nipple/bottle situation".
OwensMom 08-24-2005, 04:45 AM Glad to hear that she is doing better on the Dr.Brown bottles. I'll have to keep that in mind in case we ever have to switch from breastfeeding to bottles.
