View Full Version : Medication during pregnancy?
KaitlynsMom 08-08-2005, 09:49 PM Just curious if anyone was taking any medications during pregnancy... curious to know if taking meds during pregnancy was a factor in our little ones having reflux.
I went through fertility treatments and besides the fertility meds, I was on Glucaphage early in pregnancy, on Progesterone support for the first 13 weeks of my pregnancy and also on Wellbutrin besides my Prenatal vitamins.
EmmasMommy 08-08-2005, 09:51 PM I took Prenatal vitamins and then Flovent for my asthma...which became severe during the last trimester. I also used an albuterol inhaler 5 times.
Janette 08-08-2005, 09:59 PM I used my inhaler occasionally, and also took the occasional Tylenol/acetaminophen. Apart from that, I think I just had prenatal vitamins, calcium and folic acid.
Nathan'sMommy 08-08-2005, 10:08 PM Just lots and lots of tums. :)
KaitlynsMom 08-08-2005, 10:33 PM Hmmm weird that you guys both have Asthma too... I have it too but I have not used my inhaler in a couple years... it makes me gag and vomit when I use it.
It makes me really wonder if there is something in our medical history or something that was done during pregnancy that makes this occur in babies.
I just get so curious and need to know everything I can about things when someone I care about is diagnosed with something. I cant imagine that the answer is "some babies just have it and some dont"... I believe SOMEthing had to help it along. Maybe it was something I ate?? lol
Janette 08-08-2005, 11:02 PM From what I've read, reflux is usually hereditary, but there's no one with reflux on either sides of Evan's family. I've been reassured time and time again that none of his "problems" were caused by something that I did during my pregnancy, so I'm finally past the questioning and blaming stage of it. I do wonder if you're onto something with the asthma though...Both dh and I have in recent years started with asthma, and the gag and vomit thing when it gets really bad.
CadysMommy 08-09-2005, 09:04 AM I took a whole slew of medications during my pregnancy for my severe asthma and allergies:
Advair (which I stopped while nursing)
Albuterol
Singulair
Zyrtec
Flonase
Sudafed (off and on)
Tylenol
***All approved by both my family doc and OBGYN. All also very necessary to get both myself and the baby oxygen since my blood-oxygen levels started to run very low, very early in my pregnancy due to uncontrolled asthma.
Becky in NM 08-09-2005, 01:43 PM I took the good stuff -- vitamins, folic acid -- and Tylenol and Tylenol PM in the week before D arrived and I was in VERY much pain.
AlexysandAaronsMom 08-09-2005, 05:29 PM Just lots and lots of tums. :)
Same here!
Shaes Grammy 08-09-2005, 07:27 PM Roni also has asthma (not sure if she took asthma meds during pregnancy or not??). She had to take Diclectin (for nausea and vomiting) the entire time of her pregnancy.
No history of noticeable reflux, although I do remember my father always had his Tums on the kitchen table. But he never complained of heartburn or anything like that.
sarahh 08-10-2005, 03:14 AM Apart from the IVF drugs and the progesterone suppositries (oh yay- the were great) for 12 weeks, I had to take asthma meds (bricanyl and pulmicort) to continue to breathe! I didn't take anything else, except the prenatal vitamins and folic acid.
zapsmom 08-10-2005, 01:29 PM I didn't take any med when I was pregnany except for tynelol for my mirgines and prenantal vitamins. I did take the Dicletin when I was pregnant with Hobbes b/c the morning sickness was dyhrating me where i had to go to the hospital.
sixdogssixcats 08-11-2005, 09:03 PM Prenatals, progesterone during the first trimester and daily Lovenox injections during the entire pregnancy.
OwensMom 08-18-2005, 05:18 PM I only took prenatals during pregnancy, I do have allergies but luckily didn't need to use my meds for them.
Gracie's mom 09-04-2005, 10:05 PM I had numerous vaginal infections (just bacterial vaginosis) throughout my pregnancy, so I had rounds of Flagyl. I have always wondered if that had anything to do with it.

Hmmm Kelly. I hadn't thought of that. I took Monistat on numerous occasions while pregnant with my GERDling.
kimran14 09-05-2005, 08:00 AM I took the occassional Tylenol while pregnant for both & had to use diclectin (for all day morning sickeness) right till the end with both boys.
I don't think the Flagyl wuold have hurt as I was put on that after Sam was born for an infection in my uterus while I was nursing. I called the Mothers At Risk Line (at the Sick Kids hospital in Toronto) to double check to see if it was ok to take while nursing, they assured me it was as it is used in premies.
Aaronsmommy 12-28-2005, 01:36 PM Just lots and lots of tums
I should have gotten loyalty stock!!
scarlet 12-29-2005, 01:21 AM With my first baby I developed very bad asthma, I was on Pulmicourt inhaler- Cooper came with no problems. I had no asthma with Parker and he has reflux, I did use an anti-nausea drug that my Ob. told me is harmless though.
I also think about it a lot and think there must be some link. I haven't found one yet!
Noah's Mom 12-29-2005, 08:52 AM Same problems as Judy. I had a sinus infection that lasted months. My nose bled and throbbed, but those stupid, weak antibiotics just couldn't nix it. I needed Albuterol atleast 4 times per day to breath. I wheezed all day long even with the meds. I had to take Sudafed all the time to try and drain my sinuses, and it was the only thing that worked to some extent. I had to go off of all my "tummy" meds. These meds were all suggested by my OBGYN. I didn't take anything that he didn't tell me to take.
Albuterol
Flovent
Tylenol
Sudafed (lots and lots)
Amoxicillan for nearly the entire 2nd & 3rd
Boat-loads of Milk of Magnesia
Sorry I'm late to this one...
I, too, should have gotten loyalty stock for all the tons of Tums I consumed like candy...I took prenatal vitamins, Tylenol (as needed for the awful migraines) and I have kidney disease (one of the problems being reflux in the ureters), so I took antibiotics to help stave off UTIs/kidney infections.
I have been thinking about what others said about IRD being heredetary...I often wonder if my kidney reflux could have been passed on to her as GI reflux? Also, my dad has IBS and frequent heartburn, as does her maternal aunt. I think stomach issues run in the family. :-(
lisaann 12-30-2005, 08:28 AM I took way more "stuff" with this pregnancy than I did during my other two. I always wondered if Noah's problems were from something I took.
Besides a prenatal I took:
fish oil pills
probiotics to ward off GBS
amoxicillian
omoprazille (nasty antibiotic that landed my in the hospital for days)
vancomycin (strong antibiotic to reverse the effects of the omoprazille)
nexium during my whole pregnancy
progesterone shots from 19 - 30 weeks
insulin for 8 weeks
