Hi,
Hannah's poop is always green. Sometimes frothy, sometimes mucuosy, and occasionally seedy like a BF baby should be but it is still green, sometimes dark green but usually bright to light green.
It used to be more brown but that was when she was only going every 3-4 days. Now she goes every day(4-5 x) For those with dogs it kind of looks like when a dog eats grass and vomits. Sorry for all the info!
I asked the doctor once and he said it was okay, but I just don't think so.
I read that it could be a malabsorption problem in the instestine from an allergy or celiac disease.
I also try and give one bottle a day(2ozs) of formula to try to get as many calories in her and it's still green. The formula is lactose free.
She does get polycose every day( a carbohydrate solution) for extra calories and she is on prilosec. Has anyone had this problem or know anything about it?
Thanks for any info!

I do not know prosilec, but perhaps the meds could be causing the green as prevacid turned Iain's stools to a lovely liquid green that literally squirted out of him. Ick.
Otherwise, I would check your formula to see if it is iron enriched as it could very well cause the colour and sometimes the mucous as it is hard on their system, but necessary for them from 6 months on. You will not see the beautiful and inoffensive BF stools as she is not being breastfed exclusively now, even the 2 ounces is enough to change the stool significantly.
Malabsorption problems are usually showing up with bulky, greasy, foul smelling stools. The green colour alone is not enough to indicate that.

green is ok, but if you would feel better you should call a lactation consultant. It could simply be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

thanks,
Leigh-She has only had a few bottles of formula(just in the last week) and the poop was green before then. Maybe it is the prilosec. I can't remember how long we have been dealing with the green poop. I am sure it took a couple of weeks for the prilosec to really start working on her system. The prilosec is a purple liquid, maybe it's the dye? :dontknow:
lucy- I thought it was a milk inbalance at first but it changes consistency. I read that the imbalance ones are mainly frothy green, I think we have some of those occasionally when she won't stay latched long. I will ask a lactation consulatant though. I need to ayway to see if I can get some better tips on keeping her on longer. Once I get soft she breaks off immediately. I keep trying to keep her on so she can get even more hindmilk. I know she is getting some but I think she needs more.
I am just still wondering if she is in the early stages of developing an allergy to something. I have heard that it sometimes takes a few times of being exposed to something to develop an allergy or to develop a stronger reaction.
Believe me I hope it's absolutely nothing and this is normal for her but I would also like to catch any problems before they get worse.
I have nursed the others(one was on Zantac) and they always had the normal looking poops even when we had to add formula to the EBM for extra calories(preemie issues)
Thank you again for taking time to answer me! I appreciate it and believe me I take everything into consideration. :thumbrig:

Alexys had green poops when she was bf also. She still does once in awhile. I dont think its the color that matters, babies poo really varies in that area quite a bit. The mucous could be a reaction to something that you ate though.

My son is on Prilosec and his poos aren't always green. Now that the boys are on solids the colour changes all the time!!  When I expressed, Stephen's poop was always green- on breast milk and on formula. They say that gassy babies can have green poo- that it is a sign of wind. ANyway, green poo in babies is quite normal- breastfed or not.

Figured out the culprit. It's the polycose. We ran out for a few days since it is hard to find and her poop went back to normal. After we started polycose again it went back to green.
Thank everyone!

Glad you found out the problem! We were set to have polycose, but ended up on nutren jr with fibre instead. Next time I see the dietician I will know if she still has the polycose in mind.
Good detective work! :)
