View Full Version : Sleep question regarding MOM'S SLEEP
ZacsMom 07-26-2005, 09:17 AM Hi ladies,
This question is actually regarding the amount of sleep YOU get.
I am just curious as I want to know how much worse off or better off I am than most. Basically to keep my own sanity. :smt119
I just want to know on an average, how many of hours of sleep YOU get per night.
This is my first baby and I am STILL getting use to not having my 9-10 hours of sleep anymore! (selfish, i know!) :smt100
When 6:30/7:00 comes around and Zac's up I just want to pull the covers over my head and disappear sometimes! But the feeling goes away, as I am WIDE awake now and not tired.
:smt040 Sorry for rambling. Thanks for the responses in advance!~
CadysMommy 07-26-2005, 09:24 AM Although Cady is a good sleeper at night, she is so exhausting to care for during the day, with taking care of her, my older daughter, the house, feeding everyone! I never get a moment to myself, so what I've really noticed myself doing is after everyone goes to bed, I end up staying up until 11:00 watching TV, reading, etc. So, on the days that I work, I end up only getting about six hours and on the days that I don't work, I get seven. I know I should get myself to bed earlier, but after I get Kaylin to bed at 9, I feel such a weight off my shoulders and all I want to do is relax minus family. I'm terrible, I know!
ZacsMom 07-26-2005, 09:27 AM Judy, that's exactly how i feel!! Once I get Zac in bed (around 8:30) I know that I SHOULD go to bed myself. However, I stay up enjoying my "me time" w/out baby for about an hour. Usually checking posts and watching tv with DH. After an hour I FORCE myself to go to bed as I do not know when I'll have to wake up again! You know what I mean.
kimran14 07-26-2005, 09:32 AM I need that time too!!!
Ben is in bed every night between 8-830pm & Sam goes to bed between 8-10pm. If he is in bed closer to 8pm it is not so bad, but if he stays up till 10pm I still feel like I need at least a half hour to myself even though I know I should be in bed.
For the original question, if Sam sleeps thru I get about 7-8 hours of sleep. If he has a bad night (more bad then good right now) I only get about 5 hours.
CadysMommy 07-26-2005, 09:50 AM What time does Zac go to bed at first? Cady's anywhere between 7-9, depending on when she has her evening nap, but I also have Kaylin and she goes to be anywhere between 8:30 and 9:30, mostly because it's summer and she's off of school. Like I said, once Kaylin's all tucked in, it's like I have my own little "Yay! Another day's done!" party and I kick back watch TV, check posts, yada, yada and I can face the next day, even if I'm tired from having some "me" time!
zapsmom 07-26-2005, 10:04 AM I think that I get 6 hours now. Zoee is usually in bed when I get home from work and Hobbes goes to bed at 12:30. So I go around then as well. Yeah, I know tha tit is late for a little onebut Hobbes is what they call "HIGH energy " and has problems settling down. So I get sleep from 1 to 5 then DH makes noise when going to work and then Zoee is up at 7-8. So 6 hours of unbreaked sleep , 8 with break sleep. Hey that is pretty good! But before Zoee started sleeping through tthe night which just started, I was getting 4-5 hours!
ZacsMom 07-26-2005, 10:28 AM Well Zac is in bed around 8:30 and wakes up about 1-130...so if i'm in bed by 930 i get about 4 hours of unbroken sleep. He goes back down until about 430 or 5 and eats again. After feeding zac at 130 I'm usually asleep again by 2am (hard for me to fall back asleep). So I get another 2-3 hours of unbroken sleep. After the 5ish feeding he sleeps another hour or two and is up for the day. SO i'd say calculating that all in and by the time I fall back asleep after feedings I get around 6-7 hours total.
On the other hand, zac USE to go to bed at 10, but he would sleep until 5 or 6am which was nice. He'd eat and go back to sleep for a few more hours. I miss those days but I really wanted to get him use to going to bed earlier so it didn't effect me in the long run.
I'm sure he'll be back to waking up once or not at all at night soon, hopefully!
CadysMommy 07-26-2005, 11:35 AM I'm sure he will! Everything in it's own good time, huh? You're doing a great job even with the lack of sleep!
Janette 07-26-2005, 11:56 AM When Evan's reflux was at it's worst, both dh and I averaged a broken 2 to 3 hours of sleep per night. Now that he's older, medicated and doing better, I still only get 5 to 6 hours per night, but a lot of that is b/c I need that "me time" after everyone else has gone to bed for the night. Then I'm up with dh at 5 a.m. when the alarm goes off, and resettle by 5:45 or 6 a.m. for an hour to an hour and a half. Before having kids, I used to get 8 hours of sleep per night, but now when I sleep for 8 hours, I just feel more tired. I guess my body just learned to deal with less.
Becky in NM 07-26-2005, 12:34 PM When Daniel used to get up a few times in the night, I'd fall back to sleep immediately once my head hit the pillow, but now if he wakes up and I go to him, it takes me at least an hour extra to get back to sleep. I shouldn't complain, he's been sleeping through about 95% of the time now that he's over that nasty ear infection, but now I think he's waking up too early. I get about seven or eight hours of sleep, but I'm very tired every night after my busy days with him.
EmmasMommy 07-26-2005, 02:59 PM Sara,
Emma goes to sleep around 9 and then I usually stay up for quite awhile b/c I'm in grad school and trying to finish papers/read for class....I know, ick! :? Some nights I go to bed around 11, other times I wait to go to bed until after her 1 a.m. feed...b/c I just have too much schoolwork to do. On average, I get about 6-7 hours a night, broken up. Eeek...I thought I was doing good on sleep...guess not.
sixdogssixcats 07-26-2005, 04:35 PM I probably get about 4-5 hours per night on average. I've had raging insomnia my whole life and once I wake up, I'm up for good. Doesn't matter if I've been asleep for 2 hours or 6 hours. Catherine goes down 8:00-8:30 every night and I go to sleep between 11:00 and midnight. She wakes around 3:00 for a bottle and then sleeps until 6:00 or so. Most nights. Last night she got up 4 times. She's teething and no amount of Tylenol or Hylands teething tablets makes one bit of difference!
ZacsMom 07-26-2005, 06:04 PM Yikes, lesley!
Well at least you're use to it to some degree .
kimran14 07-26-2005, 07:57 PM Like the new picture Sara :)
ZacsMom 07-26-2005, 07:59 PM Thanks, I can't believe I managed to do it! I wouldn't have been able to if it weren't for becky and janette! Not sure that I like it but I lost my other one now so i'm stuck with it for now
kimran14 07-26-2005, 08:03 PM Becky helped me with mine too :)
Well off to bed. It's 10pm here & I just put Sam down & I am so hoping it is for the night. For some reason I feel dead on my feet tonight but instead of going right to bed here I am checking emails, etc.
Janette 07-26-2005, 08:15 PM I like your new sig. picture too, Sara, but you look so different from the last one. Which is the real you? :P

Very cute, lucy! LoL
ElisMom 07-28-2005, 12:56 PM Good question
Like Janette, when Eli was at his worst 2 hours of sleep was what I would get. Maybe. Just when I would get the puke cleaned up, him settled down, me done crying from being exhausted from weeks on end of the same thing, and got back to sleep myself, he would wake. We went through the same process for months, I was a wreck!!!
Things do get better, really they do, I promise!!!!
ZacsMom 07-28-2005, 12:59 PM OH MAN, ERIN...that really sounds like you went through a MESS of a time! (no pun intended!)
Hearing things like this make me thankful that I could have been worse off.
ElisMom 07-28-2005, 01:03 PM HeHe, and I didnt even think of the constant repropping hoping to prevent a puke... so maybe even less sleep when added all together? My husband wasn't much help, not that he didnt want to, but he would seriously walk into walls and stuff while trying to care for Eli, and do really scary stuff with him because he was so exhausted after a few nights. LOL. I would wake him up to go care for Eli and he would walk into the bathroom and just stand there not knowing where he was... that is how out of it we both were from lack of sleep LOL,
ZacsMom 07-28-2005, 01:08 PM I would wake him up to go care for Eli and he would walk into the bathroom and just stand there not knowing where he was... that is how out of it we both were from lack of sleep LOL,
It's funny what lack of sleep does to you! I was like that the first couple weeks of Zac's life! DH woudln't get up with him because "he worked all day" and I had to breastfeed him anyway so what was the point?
I looked back at my BF logs from his first weeks home and he was LITERALLY eating every hour on the hour and taking a half an hour to finish nursing...soooo you do the math!
I remember from day one in the hospital I got NO sleep for 48 hours. It's pretty scarey was sleep deprivation can do to you! Do you know that a person can die from no sleep before they would die from no food/water???
I was recovering from a c section and nearly passed out from no sleep. Everytime I tried to get up out of bed to get the baby I near fell down.
ElisMom 07-28-2005, 01:12 PM I believe that! Sheesh, I cant tell you how many times I thought I would die if I couldnt sleep, and seems God would give me just enough rest to go on.
I remember those first few days after babies birth, I actually heard voices once  after my first.
ZacsMom 07-28-2005, 01:18 PM I actually heard voices once  after my first.
Okay now you're scaring me!
LOL!
ElisMom 07-28-2005, 01:19 PM HaHa, it was scary, I had contractions for like a week before I finally had him and was so excited that I laid awake timing them and couldnt sleep through them, so by the time I had him and had gone through a week with no sleep at all, I think I was hallucinating a bit.....LOL, It was scary.
ZacsMom 07-28-2005, 01:23 PM Yea the anticipation can get to you! I really never had contractions, or at least nothing of significance!
Nor did I hallucinate, thank goodness.
Janette 07-28-2005, 09:17 PM My husband wasn't much help, not that he didnt want to, but he would seriously walk into walls and stuff while trying to care for Eli, and do really scary stuff with him because he was so exhausted after a few nights. LOL. I would wake him up to go care for Eli and he would walk into the bathroom and just stand there not knowing where he was... that is how out of it we both were from lack of sleep LOL,
LOL Erin...It sounds like you're talking about my dh... I'm so glad we're finally past those days!
ZacsMom 07-29-2005, 07:56 AM I'm so glad we're finally past those days!
AMEN SISTER!!!
AlexysandAaronsMom 07-29-2005, 08:01 AM I totally missed this post somehow.
I get about 5-6 hrs a night, I would get more but I cant go to bed right after she does....she goes to bed between 7-9pm and sleeps until 6-8am but I dont go to bed until at least midnight usually. That's just "my" time when she is finally asleep. I try to get a lot of housework done so I dont have to do as much during the day when shes up. And also thats the only time dh and I see each other is when he gets home late at night.
sarahh 07-31-2005, 03:34 AM For the forst 3-4 months of life, I was feeding the boys around the clock every 3 hours. Because of the reflux and difficult feedings, it woud take me 2 hours to feed and resettle them down. I would then have about 45 minutes sleep and it was time to start again with feedings. This was around the clock!! No wonder I blew up the microwave- I was sooooo sleep deprived. However, I survived and we now sleep through the night. The boys are in bed at 7pm and wake around 6am. Sometimes they wake earlier but I put their dummy in and they will go back to sleep until 6- 6:30am. It is true bliss!!!!!! Of course we have the odd night where I have to get up to them for whatever reason but it's not that common.
I have been in Australia for the last 3 weeks and they were very unsettled over there and never slept through- in fact I was up and down to one or the other every couple of hours. The funny part is that I adjusted to this broken sleep so easily. I was definitely tired but coped with really well. So pleased they are back to sleeping thorugh again since we have been home though!!
Janette 07-31-2005, 09:45 PM So pleased they are back to sleeping thorugh again since we have been home though!!
I was just going to ask you that, Sarah. I'm glad they've re-adjusted!
