dh is concerned that Catherine will at some point become unable to have a more solid bowel movement because she's only had runny Alimentum poops thus far in her 6 months and those don't require the muscle exertion to eliminate that a more solid poop would have. Is this a valid concern or something he made up?

It sounds good, have to give him credit for that!! :D Breastfed babies have pretty runny poops until they are introduced solids, and most dont have any problems after that so I'm guessing she will prob be ok....although I really dont know thats just a guess. Alexys has diarrhea all the time and she still pushes and grunts sometimes which I dont really think is necessary since its almost like water, maybe shes just practicing.

I do not think it should be a problem as she will eventually get the signals and interpret the signals of an impending BM due to the stretching there regardless of whether they are runny or not. She is a tad young yet to be able to manipulate that. Does she show any signs of having a BM? The grunting, turning red, etc.?
I may be wrong, but the problem usually lies with kids who have stretched out their intestines due to chronic constipation, stool holding, diverticulosis (I think that is the one where pockets emerge in the intestines and the run off poop slips out of them) because the signals are very weak due to the constant problems.
If her stools are soft, but formed at all then she is likely fine. If it is pure coloured water I would address with the ped. The soft stools are usually considered better as there would be no concern about anal fissures due to straining and problems with constipation progressing into stool holding.
