View Full Version : Sleep Question
EmmasMommy 06-12-2005, 09:11 PM The past two days, Emma has not taken very well to her crib for naps or at night. She'll fall asleep on me...I'll put her in her elevated crib and she wakes up and cries and won't calm down. I'll try to pat her back, give her the pacifier....to no avail. After about 5 long minutes of that....tonight, I picked her up and put her on her right side on this makeshift "bed" on the floor. It's just a blanket folded into fourths....and she was out....completely asleep!
The past few weeks all I can get out of her is 30 minute naps, tops....in the crib several times a day. However, today I tried having her sleep on this makeshift bed on the floor and she slept for 2 hours....twice. I had to even wake her up because I was afraid she wouldn't sleep tonight!
I have no clue why she would prefer this type of sleeping arrangement because it's not elevated at all! She's sleeping completely flat on her side.......
I'm afraid this is going to worsen reflux episodes, but how can she be so comfortable in this position?
Do all of your children sleep in an elevated crib/bed? I know that some of your children sleep in your bed....is your bed elevated?
My husband and I are clueless about what to do!
Janette 06-12-2005, 09:33 PM Evan went through something similar around or after 12 months. He just HATED to be lowered into his crib and would wake screaming. At roughly 21 months, we just switched him to a bed and he has slept much better ever since. He just loved his big boy bed. We have it elevated, but I'm not sure if he still needs it that way. I'm afraid to change it though, as he's doing so well right now.
If it's working for her to sleep this way, I'd go with it.
ElisMom 06-12-2005, 10:40 PM do what works. Lots of babies go through a stage where they can't stand there crib. I ended up putting my 9 month old (Sabin) in a bed because he screamed bloody murder in his crib, he was already walking and would climb out..... Eli on the other hand, who will be 3 in a few months, loves the crib and doesnt even attempt to get out, he snuggles right in when put in it. Some kids just dont like the confinement of the crib, I dont blame them :D
If she is sleeping on the floor and more comfortable there, maybe she is going to be one of those people who like really firm surfaces for sleeping, or maybe she is independant and doesnt like to be confined and stuck. :D Too cute picuring her cozy on the floor.
EmmasMommy 06-13-2005, 06:13 AM maybe she is independant and doesnt like to be confined and stuck. :D Too cute picuring her cozy on the floor.
Thanks for your input, Erin.... :) She does look cute on the floor....but I did sleep with her last night because I was afraid of spiders....(I know....I'm strange...like there's anything I could have done to prevent one crawling on her!)
But, I think your comment hit it on the nose.....she is already so independent at her age.....she thinks she's a "big girl" already! She would rather sit and talk to me in her little bouncy chair than play with a toy, (although she does that too....but doesn't get as excited).
You're right though....do what works.....
My husband realigned her crib so it's not elevated anymore....we're thinking we had it too elevated..(it was 6 inches), and we created the nest Roni suggested.
We're going to just try using a pillow or blankets to elevate the mattress slightly and see if that works. If not....we're on the floor! Ü Sore back, here I come!
ElisMom 06-13-2005, 11:03 AM HaHaHa, about the spiders! HeHe, I probably would be afraid of that too. let me know how it goes with the changes in the "cage" HeHeHe. So, reminds me of my Sabin, the big little one in my sig line.
zapsmom 06-13-2005, 11:21 AM Zoee since April has refused her crib. She will only sleep in her play pen in the living room. She can sleep there better and seems more happier. She is not up every hour like she was inher crib! She still does awke up in the middle of the nights maybe 2-3 times but it is goeeting better.
Maybe you can put that blanket that hse likes to sleep on in her crib and see if that makes a difference. Otherelse do what works! :D
sarahh 06-14-2005, 02:30 AM Definitely do what works Amanda. During the day, our boys will not sleep in their cots. I have them on sheepskins out on the living room floor. They will quite happily sleep there for a couple of hours at a time, but put them in their cots and they scream the place down. Ironically at night, they go to bed in their cots and don't make a peep!! Very confusing!! :? :? ALso, I noticed that the boys went through this phase for several weeks, where all of a sudden they would sleep for 1/2 an hour then wake up and then sleep again for half an hour- this went on all day and was soooo frustrating as I couldn't get anything done. Thank goodness they have gone back to having 2 good naps a day.
Shannon had a good idea of putting that blanket in the cot- may be worth a go.
Katerina 06-14-2005, 10:33 AM Kat started out on her stomach and on my chest. I had to elevate my chest. She now sleeps on a toddler mattress on our floor. I slightly elevate the head.
Kat is a sleep walker and a light sleeper. Since she slept on me from birth to about 2, we haven't move her too far away yet.
ZacsMom 07-27-2005, 12:41 PM Hey, AManda!
UGH I didn't see this post either so sorry for late response.
I was begining to wonder if I have zac's crib elevated enough. I only have one good size pillow under the head of his mattress and one long rolled towel on top of that at the VERY edge of the head of the bed. It's not inclined very much and I think that it shoudl be elevated more but he seems to be comfortable so I dont thinK I'll change it just yet as he already slips down a bit at night!
Anyhow since you posted this is she still sleeping on floor with the spidies? LoL Just jokin but I thought your comment was funny. I'd be a bit eeked out about that, too. But like you said, what can youdo about that anyway?
ZacsMom 07-27-2005, 12:44 PM Okay I really am a moron> The reason I didn't see this post as new is because I wasn't even a fricken MEMBER yet.
I amaze myself sometimes.
Janette 07-27-2005, 08:10 PM LOL Sara! Not a moron, just sleep deprived...
EmmasMommy 07-27-2005, 09:49 PM You're too funny, Sara!
No...she's not on the floor anymore....eek...kind of glad...spiders freak me out. The not wanting to sleep in her crib only lasted a weekend. Guess she wanted to have a weekend slumber-party with Mom! :D
I read somewhere on Roni's information that the head of the bed/mattress should be at least 6 inches higher than the foot. We use two good size pillows, side by side, under the head of the mattress and it measures exactly 6 inches. I checked by measuring the top of the mattress to the springy/metal base at the foot and it was 9 inches and the top of the mattress to the springy/metal base at the head was 15 inches. She's not nearly as elevated as those kids on those tucker slings! But, I guess it works. When Emma was a newborn, before she was diagnosed, she would choke/cough all night on her vomit....I knew something was wrong! Now that only happens about once in a great while. Thank goodness.
ZacsMom 07-28-2005, 12:43 PM Alright, well glad to hear she's not sleepin on the floor anymore!
I'll have to get out my tape measurer to check his crib.
EmmasMommy 07-28-2005, 09:52 PM I am a bit anal/compulsive....eeks....I can't believe I told everyone I measured it to the inch.....
lack of sleep = writing whatever comes to mind =
