Daniel is taking his third antibiotic due to his impossible ear infection, and he really held his own with the first two meds. But now we're on the third one for 14 days, and from day one he's had diahrrea like I've never seen. Saturday he pooped and leaked three times within ten minutes. Each time I got his diaper and shorts changed, my clothes changed, and my hands washed, he run up to me again with another mess. Today we had five blowouts with outfit changes and four messy diapers that stayed within their boundaries. It will be interesting to get his weight tomorrow when we go back to the ped yet again.

We're already giving Daniel Baby Dopholous, and he's wearing plastic underwear over his diaper. What else should I do besides beg the ped for mercy tomorrow?????

I forgot to mention that I think the antibiotic is making D feel so miserable that he's back to wimpering all day. The only time he's happy is just after emptying his stomach into his diaper.

Besides begging for mercy, and you ask the ped. about an OTC medication to help keep the diarrhea in check?

Yeah, I plan to do that, too, but the ped already acknowledged D would get diahrrea, and I've also asked the pharmacy what I could give him. Once they discovered he was only 1 1/2, they said there was nothing OTC. So maybe there's something he can prescribe.

For both of your sakes, I sure hope so!

Oh Becky. (((HUGS))) Your poor wee man, he must be soooooo miserable. I bet he does feel better once al that icky poop is out. I so hope that there is something else he can have antibiotic wise or something to help him OTC. And Becky, you must be at your wits end. Oh hon, I really feel for you. Have you been able to have some time for yourself lately- because you sure do deserve it.
Do the plastic pants help contain things??? Oh man, you deserve a MEDAL!! :D

You're right, Shannon, about the yogurt. I used to give Daniel 12 ounces of yogurt a day, but he stopped eating orally about 10 days ago, and now he just gets Similac 2. I bet that's why he handled the first two antibiotics pretty well.

Sarah, unfortunately, the plastic pants are not working too well, either! DH and I went on a date Friday while my ILs were in town for the long weekend. Even just having them around to entertain Daniel was a nice break for me. So I'm not going too crazy yet!

Here's some good news: Since we started the NG tube and stopped the force feeding, D has started to chew up (and spit out) lots of things, but yesterday at dinner he actually swallowed about 12 berry burst cheerios! :wav: So I'm thinking we'll just leave the tube in til he gets his G tube and try to encourage the self feeding.

I am so sorry, Becky. Diarrhea is awful. Try putting a pullup over his diaper. The plastic pants really did nothing for us either. Try either a diaper and a pullup, or a pullup and the plastic pants. Pullups do come in smaller sizes now as I just received one in the mail as a trial size for Iain.

I must have missed the youghurt post as I would have suggested that. WHat about a drinkable youghurt? Would he take that at all? Which med is he on now? Iain's bugs seem to laugh at amoxil anymore, so we last had biaxin which was a gastro nightmare. Maybe there is a dose for kaopectate for him or something similar? My point of view now on nasty poops is to drag a sample into the office with you so they can see and smell your pain! It seems to work for me now. As wordy and descriptive as I can be nothing seems to beat a baggie with a nasty!

Begging for mercy would likely be appropriate.

That's awesome news about getting a break over the week-end and about the cheerios! Hang on to those good things, Becky!

Just an update: D's ear is STILL a problem and so now we're going back to the first antibiotic, which was nicer to his tummy before. And we're seeing the OT Tuesday unless the ped can get us in somewhere else sooner.

Today D actually didn't have too many incredibly awful diapers. He still had leakers and we both had to change a few times, but overall the volume of crap was way down. And, somehow, he'd gained five ounces in the past week. I have a feeling the scale was not calibrated the same.

Becky, I am so glad things are calming down a bit and that you are back to the AB that is kinder on Daniel's tummy. Leigh's idea of the pullup over the nappy sounds like a good one. Plastic pants don't let the area breathe either so I'm sure things get sweaty. Mind you, if he's going so often, it wouldn't be an issue!!!
Glad you're having some time away too, it's so important to keep your sanity intact!

I am happy for Daniel that he has switched back to a more gastro friendly AB. Why do they think it will work this time? Is it better for him now?

The 5 ounces might be a calibration thing or he could have just had some diarrhea he was hoarding for that particular visit. I am hoping that the scale is correct as he does not need to lose and ounce.
