View Full Version : Reflux worries...
mariainlv 05-22-2005, 11:02 PM So tonight dh calls out to me a bit panicked. Anthony refluxed/threw up and choked... Wasnt the fundo supposed to CURE this??? How did he throw up?? I have had my suspiscions that he was refluxing still (archng his back, gagging, grimacing, swallowing fast over and over) but nothing had come out so I assumed I was overreacting. In the AM I will call the GI Dr and ask what we do now? I think we should check and see how often he is refluxing? That seems like the place to start right? Or maybe just watch and see? Ack im not sure. His reflux was so severe in the hospital that it scares me. Here at home I have no way of monitoring him 24/7 right now and that is troublesome. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Maria
Leigh 05-22-2005, 11:15 PM I am sorry, Maria, but I have no experience with fundos. I know that they are supposed to take care of the problem, but as some will attest they can fail. One regular here has a son with 3 failed fundos, I believe. Having said that, he may be experiencing something else, so how about a call to the hospital to see if you should take him in? I have no idea how long ago he had this done nor his age, but a call might be in order. Is he showing signs of anything else? Fever, general malaise, increased pain, etc?
Do keep an eye on him and if your Mommy senses start to tingle, I would take him to the hospital if you fear aspiration.
I am sure that others much better versed with this shall post tomorrow. Sorry that I can not be of help.

zapsmom 05-22-2005, 11:18 PM (((HUGS))) I agree with Leigh. If your mommy'd sensexss tingle then take him in. I ti s always good to be on the safey side of things. I am sure one of the other will know how to help you better!.

Oh no! Hopefully this is a one time thing. Unfortunately, it could be a sign that the wrap is too loose, or that it's failed altogether. Have you read the info on the surgery from the pages on the fundo?
The doctor will likely want to just wait to see if it happens again. I doubt he will begin any testing after one episode. Hopefully it will be just an isolated incident and won't happen again, at least that's likely what the doctor will tell you.

Becky in NM 05-23-2005, 01:46 PM Oh no, Maria! Sorry, I have no experience with fundos, but I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you!
Janette 05-23-2005, 11:26 PM (((HUGS))) Maria! I hope that Roni's right and it won't happen again! I'd call the doctor in the morning just to let him/her know though.
ElisMom 05-24-2005, 12:06 AM Hi, yes, the surgeon will definitely want to know he vomited. He may be vomiting on top of the wrap but if you suspect refluxing symptoms than it may have come undone or be to loose. They will want to check him out.
melba19 05-24-2005, 08:39 PM I am sorry that you are running into problems right now but I do have a few questions for you. How long ago was the fundo done? Does he seem to have any problems swallowing food down? The reason being if there any chance that things are getting stuck because he will vomit them back up. This is a thought because my son did this and we all thought that he was refluxing again. I do agree though that it could be he is refluxing again. You need to call the doc and run it by them to get some answers. I do wish you luck.
Melanie.
mariainlv 05-25-2005, 05:05 PM Well we go see both the GI dr and surgeon tomorrow. Anthony is now refluxing/throwing up after almost (sometimes during) every feed. We are watching him closely. He is also acting very uncomfortable like it isnt always making it all the way out. I am feeding him less than the minimum that dr told us, but I am trying to aleviate the problem. Last night for instance, he ate at 1:30 am. At the 4:30 feeding I stopped trying to get him to eat at about 35ccs and was opening his tube to vent when all of a sudden he threw up almost all that he had eaten. I was soaked, as were his jammies and the couch. :( After that he was wheezing kind of and swallowing alot for like 1/2 an hour. He didnt go to sleep again until 7 which is soo unusual for him. Also the next feeding I had to try to force him, but he only took 15-20 ccs and at 11 he wouldnt eat at all, but cryed like he was hungry. I try to avoid feeding at all through the tube, but caved in and did it at the 11 oclock feed. This all so frustrating as they didnt prepare me at all that anything like this might happen or what I should do? I am confused as to what may have happened???
Melanie, Anthonys fundo was done 2 weeks ago wednesday. He is only 4 months old so he only drinks formula.
Thanks for the supprt guys,
Maria
Leigh 05-25-2005, 07:03 PM I am so sorry for him! I hope that the visit tomorrow will yeild some answers and a good course of action for him. Please do let us know how he is doing.
Leigh
Janette 05-25-2005, 08:38 PM Good luck with your appointments tomorrow! I hope that you get some answers! Please update us when you can!
ElisMom 05-27-2005, 11:46 AM Let us know how it goes... how frustrating for you guys to go through the surgery and then have the same symptoms you are trying to get rid of. Let us know what they say. I would think they would do something right away. We have been adviced that the first sign of any reflux probs coming back to call them directly right away so they can see what is happening.
