View Full Version : Being hot and puking more

Has anyone noticed more puking when baby is hot? Hot weather hot, not sick feverish hot. At 10:00pm, it's still 86 degrees IN my house, and Catherine is puking up her bottles practically as soon as she swallows. We haven't turned on the A/C yet as our house is 122 years old and has no insulation. It's practically impossible to get really cool ever (and summer has just started!) I'm tempted to give her Pedialyte or plain water instead of pushing formula for the next hour or two, until the air cools down more. What do you think? Maybe it's just my adult mind that thinks milk (or reasonable facsimiles) is more "pukable" when you're overheated.

With this heat (and it's supposed to be mid- to upper-90's all week), I'm more concerned about dehydration from increased puking than calories.

Evan's dietitian was initially shocked that hot summer weather always made him worse. In fact, the summer of 2003 when he was a year old was when we were down to 2-3 hours of sleep at night b/c of the reflux. Central air didn't seem to make much of a difference. Anyway, the dietitian thought that maybe it was the humidity setting everything off. Just curious...At what age can you give Pedialyte?

I don't know ... I have some single serve bottles of apple flavor Pedialyte, and there's no reference to age on the label.

-----------------

Per the Pedialyte website, it's safe for babies over 2 weeks and/or 9 pounds.

Shae's first few summers I did notice that she was worse and eventually I clued in that maybe it was the heat. Last summer she seemed ok though.

Yesterday, it was hot here and Zoee was throwing up abit as well. She seems to be more congested and a little cranky. We have the humdity (weatherwise) up for the next coupke of days. We didn't have any A/C! We are going to cook this summer!

Catherine has kept down maybe 4oz since about 7:00 yesterday evening. And that was her whole 3:00am bottle. She does much better with nighttime feeds. The two ounces she took this morning, several hours ago, came back up all over my bed - soaked all the way through the mattress pad! Laundry is my middle name.

Laundry is my middle name.

I hear you! I have so many piles of laundry in my house that I forget which is the clean pile and which is the dirty pile. I think our ped (and the emergency room peds) had us giving Nathan pedialyte when he was tiny, maybe around 8 wks. We gave it to him only as a last resort when he would absolutely refuse formula. He actually did just as bad on the pedialyte because it was so thin.

Lesley, I know what you mean about the heat. Nathan does horribly when he is overheated. I know I probably shouldn't, but I always gave him sips of cold water from a glass just to cool him down a bit. When he got really warm, the last thing he wanted was warm formula, so cool water really helped.

I think it's a combination of high heat and bad pollen allergies. Today, I offered her a bottle of apple Pedialyte and she sucked down all 4 ounces. Quite a bit of it came back up, but at least she drank it. She doesn't want formula at all. I'm not going to give her any more Pedialyte today unless she's still refusing formula tonight. Don't want her to dehydrate but don't want her to favor 6 calorie/ounce Pedialyte over Alimentum either.

I have given pedialyte at very young ages. The problem is that it is not to replace formula and is only to get someone over a hump until food intake can begin again. Lesley, I think that you likely have a great idea on how to help Catherine in the heat as I do find also that milk seems "more pukable" too!

I must tell you all how jealous I am of you suffering from 86 degree weather. This afternoon I was actually thinking about turning the heat on here for a bit as it is only 11 C (about 50 F) and it is raining. In the last two weeks we had two days that went to -2 degrees and believe me I had the heat on. My DH wilts in a moment in the heat so he is " Mr. keep the window open even if it is January guy" and he calls me a "lizard" as I am happiest basking in the heat!

Thanks, Sheila! We like the kids, too and will probably keep them...

Nathan is so cute! Is he really blonde or am I seeing a redhead? There are so many great pictures on this site!

We are still deciding... Right now we are thinking light brown. :)

Walker is a dirty blonde changing to a very blonde in the summer. Curran is a brunette with some auburn highlights, and Iain is a full red head. It makes for some looks and silly questions as if they had more than one father... Same two parents, just some genetic variety!

Nathan looks sort of reddish in his photo, so I was not sure if it was the lighting or not. Iain is likely to stay a red head as he has the eyelashes and brows to match.

Lesley -- It was 99 here yesteday! Already! Yikes!

We saw a bit more puke last summer but that was also when D was transitioning from breastmilk to formula. So far this year we haven't seen a noticeable difference in the puking, but it's not humid here. Still 99 is pretty darn hot anyway!

Oh yeah, I think we gave D pedialyte for the first time when he was about three or four months (adjusted).

I've created a Pedialyte monster! LOL And I've tasted the stuff ... it's not good! Another scorcher, and the only way I can get Catherine to not fight me on a formula bottle is to get her started on Pedialyte and pull out that bottle after a few sips and immediately pop in an Alimentum bottle. She doesn't even pause that way. One more obstacle!

I've created a Pedialyte monster!

You're too funny!

Emma was addicted to the Pedialyte a few weeks ago when she caught a viral bug and the doctor at the local children's hospital put her on a few ounces to keep her from getting dehydrated. She was puking and had diarrea...

Emma eventually forgot about the Pedialyte...perhaps it was because we had been using the clear, unflavored version...

LOL...a Pedialyte monster.....she could do commericals for them, maybe?!?!?

Catherine puked up about 12 gallons of formula this evening so I did give her another 4oz bottle of Pedialyte before bed. It stays down better. Not entirely, but better. I figured low-cal fluids were better than nothing at all.

Something's going on with this kid. She either won't eat vigorously during the day anymore or what she does eat comes back up in buckets. She keeps down almost all of her nighttime feeds (12:00am, 2:00am and 4:00am usually). And just when I was wanting to cut out one of those early morning feeds before I keel over from exhaustion!

Catherine is getting so big! She is such a cutie!!!! :D

I know what you mean....Emma seems more pukey during the day versus at night. I thought the nighttime was the worst for refluxers, but Emma drinks down her bottle at 9ish...no puking...falls asleep around 10ish....(I know that's late, but she's on an odd schedule right now...not completely mixed up days/nights, but she's a few hours off)....gets up around 3ish...drinks her bottle and no puking.....up at 7 and then the puking starts! I strongly feel that Emma's puking is a result of her being more active during the day....I think the formula sloshes around in her tummy from one feed to the next. We have an upper GI next week sometime to see if she's having emptying problems....or possibly something anatomically wrong because she's still puking right before she's hungry again.....even 3 hours later.....tons of puke :?

I just can't get over how big she's gotten......too cute! Ü

Poor thing! I hope you get some answers from the upper GI.

How do you get Emma to sleep so well? She's quite a bit younger than Catherine, I think. Catherine's "night" is 8:00pm - 6:00am, and she gets up around 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00. She pukes quite a bit at night as I find her bedding wet when I get her up for feeds, it's less than during the day.

EmmasMommy

Not sure why she's a good night sleeper....perhaps it's because she doesn't nap worth a darn during the day....example of today....

Up at 7
Nap 8-10:30
Nap 12-1
Nap 3-3:45
Nap 5:30-6
Bed 10 - ?

The only thing that we do for sure each night is stick with a nighttime routine....we wait until about 1/2 hour before her night feed and I give her a warm bath, put on Johnson's and Johnson's Fussy Baby Lotion, , then, she gets her bottle in her room, with no lights on...just her nightlight. After she's done with her bottle I put this Baby Eucerin Lotion on her face, (she has dry skin) and read Goodnight Moon....

I know it sounds dorky, but now I'm so afraid of skipping a step because I'm afraid that she won't sleep at night!

Granted there are a few nights a week, (1-2), that she just won't "settle", so I roll out this makeshift bed out of a bunch of quilts and we sleep on her floor together.

Emma also uses a pacifier at night.... But, she spits it out and doesn't want it after she's asleep.....

Oh yeah....and Emma loves her crib the way Roni suggested...it's elevated, (as always), but we created the little nest that she suggests...with the towels and fitted sheet...Emma looks like a little bird all snuggled in...!

Us too....we're kind of nervous about the upper GI...don't know what to expect....but at least we'll be able to rule out any anatomical problems....

Thanks for the reply! Ü

Catherine doesn't sleep during the day either. As far as I can tell, she's running on adrenaline and air. She just puked her bedtime bottle, and I'm probably running the risk of being electrocuted as I stand here in the puke puddle.

Amanda,

The upper GI really isn't that bad. The worst part for us was keeping a hungry baby happy until they were ready for him. They gave him some barium to drink and watched it go down. He didn't vomit until they were done and we were back in the waiting room. If there's no vomiting, you'll find that Emma has white poop after.

Eww....lovely.

Thanks for the encouragement!! It's scheduled for June 8th. I'll post it on the message boards.
