View Full Version : How to ask this question....
zapsmom 05-03-2005, 09:52 AM Okay, I have to ask because I did wonder if Hobbes may have allergies. Not sure! The reason I am wondering are b/c of his poop. His poop are still looselike a young baby loose, not diahra(Well at times) He would be three at the end of the month. Does anyone know if his poop shold be more form into stool by now? Sorry for asking the questions. I have been wondering for some time now! :?

Janette 05-03-2005, 10:02 AM Shannon,
I've been told that an allergy would cause blood in the stool. (However mine doesn't.) Severe stomach pain could also be a sign of an intolerance. Is it possible that it's one of Hobbes' meds. that make the stools softer, or even the fact that he's wearing diapers that makes it looks mushier?
zapsmom 05-03-2005, 11:36 AM Hobbes is not on any meds but the diaper part makes sense. Bo, sometimes I wonder where my brain is vacationing at so that I can join it!

Becky in NM 05-03-2005, 02:08 PM No, I think it's a good question! We've already seen Daniel progress to more adult-like poops, although sometimes we still see the baby stuff -- depends on what he's eaten, I think. Do any of the baby books mention what it should be like by age 3?
Janette 05-03-2005, 10:35 PM I agree with Becky that it's a good question and that what he has eaten will make a huge difference in the consistency.
zapsmom 05-04-2005, 11:25 AM The books I read have said that by hte age of 3 thepoop should be stool formed because they are eating more solids. Hobbes does eat alot even with him being a pickyeater. But his are still more like soft mushy baby poops. So that is why it was a HMMM..I wonder if his poops are normal or not?

Becky in NM 05-04-2005, 12:55 PM So have you asked the ped (who you love so much)?

Leigh 05-04-2005, 09:21 PM Oh, a poop question! It has been so long since I have seen a "normal" toddler stool...
Yes, the stool should be formed. It can be soft (preferable to hard or pelleted stools as they can cause pain when passing), but it should always have some form. It is hard sometimes to tell in a diaper, especially if your guy is running, sitting, etc. and mushing it down. However, look at whether or not there is a CHANGE in the stool. If there are changes such as really soft, non-formed, watery, smelly, sticky, sandy, bulky, etc. then it could be due to illness (like a gastro virus), a sensitivity to a food (watch what was eaten up to 48 hours before), or over-indulgence (eating tons of fatty foods, too many treats, too much juice, etc.)
Food sensitivity or gut allergy is not detected by regular allergy testing, but it exists. You need to keep a food log and look for patterns. An allergy could cause blood in the stool, but it is not always found by the naked eye. Have you had Hobbes in for allergy testing?
Has Hobbes always had soft stools? Perhaps this would help to figure out how normal the stool is: If Hobbes were to produce the stool in a toilet, would it be a big ordeal to clean up his backside? ( would it be down his leg, up his back, requiring a half roll of toilet paper, stuck to him, etc) If so, then chances are it needs investigation.

zapsmom 05-04-2005, 11:49 PM Hobbes has not been tested for allergies b/c the  ped that we have doesn't believe in testing a kid untill they are over 4 or 5. I was going to ask for allergy test to be done when we see  for Hobbes 's three checkup.
Hobbes' poop 95% of the time are soft poop. We always have to put him in the shower to clean him up b/c it is messy. We call them explosive poops. I know that they are all at night when Daddy has to clean him up. I think that Hobbes know that mommy changed him for the first year and Daddy never did so he think that it is only fair that he poops when Mommy is at work! Any way, they are very smelly, 97% of the time back his back side and alittle sticky to the toliet paper that is why we just put him in the shower oe under the bath tub to clean him.
I know that he is food sensivity to apples/ apple juice. We would give him apple juice and 30 minutes later, he would explosed! He as of lately has bad diahra if he has chocolate. I am goin gto start to watch his diet and see what is causing this. I did told the  about the poop once before and he wanted a sample but DH ruined the sample or something like that. I will collect one, i htink an dthat it to the  before the appointment.
Thanks Leigh!

Janette 05-05-2005, 09:45 AM Our ped. was the same way, Shannon...He refused to do the allergy testing. When the ped. respirologist offerred to do it at our last appt. at the children's hospital, I jumped at the opportunity.
If the poops are that explosive and messy that they have to be cleaned up in the shower or the tub, I'd take that sample back to your lovely  doctor at the next appt. and MAKE him deal with it.
Leigh 05-05-2005, 09:16 PM Oh, ICK Shannon! We use the shower, too!
I know that peds or allergists prefer to test at age 5 as it is considered more accurate, but Iain has been tested at 14 months, Curran at age 2 (and again at the end of May at age 3.5), and Walker at age 5. It is still a good place to start to detect a possible allergy so I would insist.
Curran started his truly horrible poop just before his 2nd birthday in the begining of November. By mid January I could stand it no longer and took one tsp of poop in a double baggie to the ped's office and had it in the diaper bag. It reeked so bad and looked soooo slimy that she ordered tests right away! Never underestimate the power of the poop! Haul in a good load in a bag (not in a diaper as it may absorb a lot of the yuckiness) and place in on the table and ask for her opinion on it.
Juice gives Curran explosive diahrea. We know that milk in any quantity does too and I am suspecting fatty foods are a no go.
To keep your journal or "log log" as we call it, be sure to buy a little notebook and mark each day. Be vigilent about keeping details and description of stools. In about a month you will notice obvious patterns and potential problems.
Does Hobbes get rashes, hives, eczema at all?
Leigh
zapsmom 05-05-2005, 11:27 PM No Hobbes doesn't get any rashes, hives, or ecemaza. Zoee has the ecemaza. Hobbes just has explosive poops that smell so BAdddddddd!
