Gracie seems to get diaper rash instantly when she poops. I am just wondering if her poop could have acid in it and its irritating her bottom? What do you think? We are having a problem with cronic diaper rash, as soon as one heals another appears. I have to change her immediately after she goes or her bottom will be a mess and sometimes that doesn't even help. Also she is constantly scratching when her diaper is off, I have to fight her to get her to stop. What do I do???????

Zoee is like that as well with the daper rashs. Someone suggested that I put Vaseline on her behind, so that it protects the skin. I also use Aveeno daiper cream as soon as I change her which works great as well. Hope this help somewhat! Good luck!

I'm not too sure about the acidic poop thing. Nappy rash is horrible. Airing the skin will also help.. of course you probably already know this. I would try a homeopathic remedy.. there are some good natural creams avaiable. Shannon has mentioned vaseline... it acts as a good barrier to protect the skin also.
Good luck!

Thanks guys! I am going to try vaseline, I guess. Seems like I have tried everything on the market, lol. I had been using Aquaphor, which worked well in the beinging, but doesn't seem to do much now. We've also tried Desitin, Palmers bottom butter, Huggies and the generic wal-mart brand of zinc oxide cream. We are going through sooooo much diaper rash cream its unreal!

Vaseline works wonders to protect Evan's skin, too. Once in a long while he'll still get a rash, though. We use a topical antifungal cream from the pharmacy to quickly clear it up.

Um, sounds like a yeast infection to me since she is itching. Some canestan creme should clear it right up but talk to your ped or pharmacist first as she is little yet. We have had plenty of diaper rashes and yeast infections in the nether regions of my middle son and canestan does work for the yeast infections.

She could have a diaper rash caused by the acid in her urine (it is trapped in there usually longer than a poop is), the acid in diahrea (it can be VERY acidic), bacterial infections, or again the yeast infection. Allowing some air flow might help, but if she is scratching she needs some relief so that she does not get a secondary bacterial infection due to the scratching.

We use the zinc oxide creme (no name is cheaper and the same thing), or the vaseline usually, but if we have a diaper rash I move over to "Barriere" which is a creme used by CHEO and it WORKS! I can pick it up at Loblaws. We also use another universal ointment by DR. Reckeweg which is homeopathic and works almost immediately like the barriere. If there is open weeping from scratching however, do not use it.

Good luck!

Shannon,

Is it sort of raw looking from the trapped in moisture?

It could be just a regular diaper rash caused by the moisture and warmth as Janette suggests. If so, airing of the nether regions and a liberal application of a barrier creme afterwards should help to clear it up. However, if it does not improve in about 3 days or gets worse in that time, or she is very itchy, then it could be a yeast infection. Yeast infections generally start off as the reddened areas (looks like a sunburn), but often (not always) go to a raised area and sometimes you get patchy areas with a bit of white in it. Yeast infections frequently occur after an antibiotic has been used, but can occur at any time.

Walker, my first son had only two diaper rashes ever and they were nothing to treat. We were new parents and could not figure out what all the fuss over diaper rashes was. Then we had Curran. Wow! He has had some totally wicked rashes that make me cringe and they come on sooo fast. He has a bout of gastro again (he's my chernobyl diaper boy) and was starting another diaper rash so I put on the Barriere creme and I bet it will be gone by morning. Iain thankfully has had very few bouts and we treat right away with the Barriere and none have progressed to being really ugly (he has not had any yeast infections yet, tho. Plenty of thrush early on, but no yeast infections down south yet).

If you can not find the Barriere creme, let me know and I might be able to pick some up for you.

I am not sure. It was not there all morning then half way through the afternoon, I was changing her and there it was . Her whole groin area was sunburn red. in the side of the groin area and legs(hard to explain) was weeping. It happened very sudden. It was weird. Zoee is one of these baby who have to be changed even if the daiper is only a little wet b/c a rash will start if you did. So I had changed her about 10 times already. This was about two days ago it happened. It is not liking so red any more and it is not weepy between the gtoin and thigh area either. It just :? me!

I will look for Barriere cream. I know that Aveeno works very good as well. It does help Zoee's littel bum and groin area very well. I am always looking for different stuff just in case it stops working,

If the reddness has gone, then it was likely due to moisture trapped in. Some kids are soooo sensitive and require frequent changes. My experience is that a yeast infection does not go away at all until treated with the proper creme (canestan). Frequent airing helps. Kids love to have the freedom of running around without the diaper, so it helps to dry out the area. Just watch the carpet!

Re the yeasty/irritating poop, we give Daniel Baby Dopholous when he's going to be on antibiotics to prevent the diaper rash. You can find it at a health food store. It replaces all of the good bacteria that the antibiotic kills off. Eating yogurt is also a good thing for this.

Well Gracie went to her dr today and it turns out she does have a yeast infection! Anyway, he gave us a script and said to use zinc oxide cream on top of it. So, we have gotten that cleared up finally. She has gained one lb and grew 1/2", so she's climbing back up the growth scale. Needless to say, her dr was pleased. Also she is getting to start whole milk now!

Good growth and starting whole milk...You must be thrilled! I hope the yeast infection clears up quickly!

Yay Gracie! Way to go on the growth!

I am glad that you had her seen and treated. Yeast infections are nasty. She will be so much happier when it is gone.

While I'm late to chime in on this one and the problem has already been resolved, YES, you can have acidic poop. My son had significant food allergies as an infant/toddler, and they caused an overproduction of stomach acid ... which came out in his poop. He actually had acid burns on his bottom. It hurt him so badly at times that it would take both dh and me to hold him down to clean him and change his diaper.

There is a preparation called Butt Paste that works well on any reddened areas. The one by Sloan Keterling is by script, but you can get one very similar over the counter called Bourdoux Butt Paste that will work well also....Nystatin cream is good for yeasty type diaper rashes, also requires a script here in IL

Now there is the old wives remedy of Browned flour....simply take some flour and stir it in a skillet until it turns light brown, cool it sift it and sprinkle it on the little one bottom....won't hurt a thing and many times Helps

That sounds along the same lines as the old corn starch remedy. I'd forgotten about that.

I was going to say that Nystatin works well fro yeast infection which Zoee alway seem to heve. You didn't need a precription here for it.

Great news on the weight, Gracie!
