View Full Version : Older children with reflux
Janette 04-26-2005, 01:41 PM I've noticed lately that there are more people with older children with reflux (say ages 3 years old plus) on the boards. I'm just curious as to how many of us there are and what ages our older GERDlings are. My son Evan turned 3 at the end of March.
Shae will be 5 next month. :D

JnT'sMom 05-21-2005, 12:07 AM Hi there,
I have been reading some of your posting and have some questions. My son has been diagnosed with reflux but I am confused about his symptoms as I read the postings. My son (3yo next week) vomits frequently, sometimes as much as 2-3 times a day. I took him in for UGI and they said Reflux and put him on Prevacid...well all he does it throw that up. I decided to take him to my chiropractor because he believed that he could help, and it really has decreased the vomiting. Sometimes he can go a whole week to 10 days without vomiting. Im just wondering if he does infact have GER or GERD or Reflux? I notice everyone talks about their children not eating and my sons EATS! and EATS and EATS! Sometimes I think that is what makes him vomit, from eating too much. Other times I think he is vomitting just because he has a really sensitive gag reflex and has gagged himself with something. Anyway, Im just wondering if anyone else has this problem with the vomiting. Thanks for any imput.
Leigh 05-21-2005, 02:49 PM My 3.5 year old has GER and has stopped the vomiting part, yet still gags and retches a lot. The difference between GER and GERD is if there are complications involved. My youngest son has GERD as he is a non-eater, has food and texture aversions, dropped off the charts for weight, developed asthma, etc. Click on the "About Reflux" section and check it out along with the symptoms. A child does not need to be a non-eater in order to have GER as Curran usually eats like a horse, but goes off food when he has bowel or reflux problems.
Curran started the vomiting as a baby and when he was a toddler we thought that he was eating too fast, putting in too much food, not chewing, etc. Even with controlled bites, smaller portions (he would just want more of it!), and tiny bite sized peices he would still vomit without any effort at all. At one point our caregiver thought he was gagging himself and once we saw that it would just pour out of him without any prompting we knew otherwise. My ped also said that he likely had a strong gag reflex and used it for an excuse on my little guy who was finally diagnosed last month when it all became rather critical. My advice to you is to watch you son closely and see "how" he vomits. It could be with very little effort and just pour out of him.
Is your child a good weight? Is he on his growth curve?
If he was diagnosed with GER than he likely has it. What test did they do? Was it a barium swallow? Milk test? The prevacid is not for everyone, so you may want to request another med if it is not agreeing with him. Prevacid did not seem to work for my wee one. Which prevacid is he on? Capsules or solutabs? How long after taking them does he vomit? Some of it may still be getting in to him if it is an hour or so after administering it. Do you give him food or drink with it?
I know of many people who have gone to a chiropractor for many things and I am sure that it is helping your son somewhat, (re-alignment has lots of benefits and we will go to see one with Curran. We are doing some Bowen therapy with him at present) but it is unlikely to cure the GER fully as it is caused by the acid reflux. He may not vomit as much as he may now be able to swallow it and could become a silent refluxer.
It is wonderful that you have a diagnosis and some help with meds. It can all be overwhelming to deal with, so please do post any concerns or questions that you have.

Janette 05-21-2005, 09:17 PM Hi Tami and welcome! My 3 yo. son, Evan, was a real vomiter for the longest time. He's now able to control it by swallowing most of the time, but still has some pretty forceful up-chucks sometimes. What form is the Prevacid in? There might be an easier way to take it. Evan has always been a non-eater. Lately though, when he's in a growth spurt and feeling well, he sure can eat! Leigh will attest to that!
Janette 05-21-2005, 09:20 PM Leigh, what is Bowen therapy?
Leigh 05-22-2005, 02:43 PM Bowen therapy deals with the re-allignment of muscles to acheive good posture, aid the immune system by ridding toxins, re-setting muscles and helping for joint pain. I will have to look up the blurb for it, but it really does help with some things. After a one hour treatment, Curran's tummy is usually better and stay better for about a week on average. She has done some on Iain as well to help his breathing when he is particularly snotty and it drains him right out by the end of the session. I have had the drainage done once and it was fantastic for breathing! It is a friend of mine who does it and I tried her once to be her guinea pig as she was completing the course and needed someone with a back problem to work on. As I had fallen down the stairs 2 weeks prior and suffered a fracture in my coccyx I agreed that she could try and was amazed that I could walk better after one treatment. It took 3 treatments to rid me of all the pain, but it was better than the estimated 8 weeks recovery that the doctor told me it would take and there was nothing other than tylenol to cope with the pain. There is definately something good about it and it does seem to work well. I will ask for the blurb again and can email it to you.

Thanks Leigh!
donna-grsic 05-25-2005, 07:45 PM Carl 18, Amanda 16, Logan 10, Hannah, 6, Marshall 3. Is that enough children with reflux? Oh and then there is my grandson Camron, a year old grown out of his Reflux, but like his father will have problems later on (especially with alcohol and the usual foods)
Leigh 05-25-2005, 08:22 PM Wow, Donna. That would be enough children with reflux! :) Quite a spread in ages and you must be kept pretty busy!
Were they all diagnosed early on? I am having a problem with a GI for my middle son right now and am in the process of asking for a second opinion. This is all so new to us (the diagnosis, not the problem) and we are still trying to find our way to get the kidlets the help that they need. Thank goodness for this board!
Janette, I suppose that I can add Curran at age 3.5years and Iain at 15 months to this poll. Walker based on what I know of reflux now was definately a refluxer, too. Now, he just has the speech and language problems, but we do not know why.

mcfly 12-15-2005, 11:26 AM Hi. My son is 4.5yrs old and he has reflux. He started out gagging and choking on food (which in turn he didn't start solids until 12months). Then once on solids he would throw up frequently and constantly have a tummy ache.
